He really is math savvy&logical person. Dont take if dont understand calc1. His class is really dense, not broad. His psets and exams test students on whether they understand just a few contents of his lectures, using Basic math&econ. I think for an A from this class, u will have to spend at least 10(focused)hrs aggregate every week.
He is a kind guy and very funny too. His lectures are very theoretical because he is really smart so it felt like someone was speaking a foreign language to me. However, the TA sessions were a lot more straightforward and this ended up being one of my favorite classes. You get used to the content and he hands out partial credit like it's candy.
Essentially "Calculus applied in Economics", this class is not easy and everything is curved. If you show up and try I don't think you'll fail, it's easier than Calculus, and Rasmus is a nice, funny, and good person, but this is a tough course.
The course was really challenging but intensely rewarding. Lentz is a funny, generous teacher. Lectures are dense but formatted very well to reference when doing a problem set. Problem sets are not review, they are FOR learning. They are difficult. Go to office hours. Pay attention in discussion. The course is predictable and rhythmic in format.
Rasmus is a very nice guy. The class is difficult, but he is extremely smart and well spoken. I do think his problem sets are ridiculously challenging, and couldn't get through them without going to office hours. The midterms are fair though, final was really hard. Overall good professor.
Very nice professor, and person overall! However..... his class.... so incredibly difficult. His exams are known to be awful, and problem sets will take you forever to do. Save yourself and don't take this class, unless you want your GPA to go down.
Lentz is a great lecturer but his problem sets are very difficult. Had to put more work into them than any class I've ever taken. Recorded OH are your friend. Going thru those made me very well prepared for the midterms. I did think the final was hard, heard the TAs saying they had trouble with it themselves. He grades fairly and transparently tho.
Obviously he's a genius, but the people who take his classes, us, are not. Problem sets are difficult that you can't finish them without going OH. The final exam was especially difficult. He lectured very well but I really couldn't get a good grade and I don't understand why this INTERMEDIATE course was made so difficult by him.
Problem sets are always so hard that you can only finish them by going to the OH. No connection between lectures and HW. Do not choose him to be your 301 prof.
Would never take this guy again. Absolute worst professor. What is taught in lecture has nothing to do with the homework. You pretty much has to relay on Google and OH for the entirety of the class.
He's a wonderful guy. Cares about his students, is understanding and adjusting. Passionate and smart to a point where it's astonishing. I thought he was a great lecturer and ensured clarity for all his students. He got giddy when the questions were good, it was so cute
Funny guy. Start the problem sets early and go to class. The final is insanely important. Fair grader.
He was pretty hilarious and really cared about the questions we asked. I would say hes too smart for us and to teach this class but ECON 301 is an incredibly difficult class and I made it through quite well with him. However, the TAs we had were probably the best possible so that I would say matters a lot more than the professor.
Really good guy that cared about students a lot. The problem sets were very difficult but tests were very fair. Would definitely take again. Just wish he moved faster through material.
Lentz is a good lecturer and he can be quite funny at times. The class itself is pretty math intensive which can make lectures boring at times but he is a good communicator. All of his problem sets and practice problems are fair and prepare you well for the exams. Exams are graded very fairly.
Rasmus is very nice and willing to take questions. He also explains things patiently and clearly.
Professor Lentz was a wonderful professor throughout the semester. His lectures were very full with information but organized and thought out, and he answers questions in clear and concise ways. The course was graded on problem sets, 3 exams, and a final.
Lentz is overall a very good professor. He is funny, a good communicator and you will do well if you put the work in. His problem sets are ridiculously difficult but if you go to office hours, the TA's will be there to make sure you do well. Tests are much easier and straightforward than the problem sets and there aren't many curveball questions.
Rasmus Lentz is honestly one of the more engaging professors I have ever had. The issue I had had to do with how dense his lectures were. The main thing is to focus on your problem sets! Do not put those off until the last day. When he goes over a similar question in lecture instantly apply it to the problem set and you'll do great in 301.
Rasmus is a great guy. I think his lectures are a bit dense, but exams are very straight forward. My advice: know the problem sets and practice problems. He is very fair about testing you on things that are comparable to his homework.
Rasmus was fantastic all year. While lectures can be filled with tons of big ideas thrown at a student, he also does a good job conveying them clearly. Rasmus also does a good job teaching in lecture and utilizing his discussion sections to help a student complete their work in a timely fashion. He is easy to contact, and is my rec for the future.
Lectures are very dense with information and often hard to follow. Rasmus is very knowledgable on the topic but spends a lot of time covering information that isn't very helpful or relevant when doing problems sets and midterms.
I only have 2 courses left to finish my degree in economics, and Lentz has been my favorite econ professor by far. His lectures are very helpful, and he keeps power lectures short with humor mixed in. The problem sets are extremely difficult, but they are meant to challenge you so that you will do well on the exam. Very fair, highly recommend.
I took Rasmus spring semester and I think that this was his first time teaching Econ 450 in while. He did a great job. You have a problem set due once every two weeks and they will make you think and challenge your abilities, but in a good way. His tests are difficult, but similar to the problem sets and overall he is a great professor.
Rasmus is the man in my opinion. He boils down economics to simpler models, which is essentially what college-level econ is, but does a tremendous job of explaining the reasoning for why certain steps are taken in more difficult problems. Could've never anticipated 301 would be my favorite class this sem. If you put in effort, you'll learn a lot.
Great professor. The homework is very difficult, but if you put in the time to solve the problem sets the exams will not be a problem. He is very knowledgeable and helpful if you need it. Not an easy A but you will learn a lot if you put in the effort
If you are truly into Economics, than there are few better profs than Rasmus. Understands economics on an extremely high-level and you can tell he loves it. Classes can be a bit lengthy & discussions are somewhat useless, but Rasmus makes lectures worth your while. My advice, just attend lecture and master the problem sets and you will be fine.
Great professor. Assignments got harder as the semester went on but nothing too hard. Assignments and exams are heavily based on his lectures. He also has clear lecture notes which he posts up online for everyone. Do your homework and go to lecture and you'll do great.
Really good lecturer, you can tell he knows what he's talking about. Very good at making you see the big picture. Decently hardtime consuming homeworks but they prepare you for the exams quite well.
I love his class so much. He is a great professor and even encourage me to pursue more on my econ major. As an international student, I can easily follow up his assignment and his lecture. However, if you work hard, then you will definitely get a good grade. Do your hw and all the problems in discussion, then you will be fine. He is a funny guy !!
Rasmus is an awesome teacher. I had him for Econ 301 and his lectures are fantastic. He is always crystal clear in explaining the material, while making things fun with his Scandinavian sense of humor. His tests are extremely fair and nothing short of easy if you pay attention to his lectures and complete all the problem sets. Great class! 1010
This guy is an excellent professor, Really knows his stuff and very good at teaching it. Exams are challenging, but straight forward. Do the hw and you'll be in good shape. Pretty funny guy, too.
Definitely not an easy class, but Lentz is extremely smart and does a great job at making the class interesting and even funny.
Good Professor, Interesting Class, Midterms are exactly the problem sets which are exactly the noteslectures
This class is HARD. I am an econ major, and I really struggled to get the B I ended up with. I like his teaching style -- he's trying to make you THINK, rather than just memorize. But he gave us very few tools. He called this "hand holding", and tried to avoid it, but I call it "teaching". He's a super nice guy though, and very funny.
Lentz correctly teaches that Econ is a framework for problem solving, not a simple plug-and-chug rendition of formulas. His class is hard because he CHALLENGES you to THINK. If you’re looking for an econ course with a pushover professor and an easy A, keep looking. If you are looking to grow as a student and critical-thinker, Ras-dog is your man!
Don't stress. If he posts practice problems look at the kinds of questions he asks. Not the answers. He will most times ask a similar question on the following exam. You need to think in this class, ; if you don't want to- take a diff professor. I ended up with a B and what he teaches DOES make sense. Curve is Great a 52 was B on the final
Avoid him like the plague. He has no interest in making things accessible to us. He tried to improve but it was too little too late.
Do NOT take this class. Homeworks are unsolvable no one pays attention in lecture
all he want is how to trick you. prac exam is not helpful at all. no answer for prac exam, he lives in his own world
A very challenging class. Almost impossible unless this is your only class for the semester. I know Professor Lentz has good intentions but I struggled on the complexity of the math, his examples are difficult to follow. When he offered a guide, things seem to make more sense. Going to the TAs was pointless and discouraging.
Homework is pretty difficult and counts for 25% of your grade. Exam problems aren't as tough (you get a double-sided page of notes), but you have the time limit to worry about. Lentz isn't easy by any means, but he keeps the pace of the class manageable.
Rasmus definitely knows what hes talking about but has trouble explaining it to his students. Uses unnecessary variables and can be confusing often. Homeworks are terrible and you cant get help from TAs. the semester did get better as he realized students were struggling, but it was still tough. Overall he seems like a really nice guy though.
This class is tough. I was even thinking to drop the class after midterm but went to the professor's office hours. He was a lot of help. Pr. Lentz is very knowledgable and keeps lectures interesting. He provides guidelines and examples about homework. You can even use A4 list of notes during exams. However, prepare to spend many hours of studying.
In all fairness, he teaches the way I'd expect a course at a top university to be taught. If you talk to him, and ask him general questions he will answer them, I have done well on all the assignments and put in a bit of work, they are tough, but do-able. Make sure to pay attention to his slides and what he says in class
HOMEWORK IS IMPOSSIBLE. Takes well over 30 hours to complete. Good luck trying not to fail.
Gives some of the hardest homework assignments I have ever seen then refuses to give any help whatsoever. Not to mention they are worth a quarter of your grade…this guy is useless do not take this class with him
Rasmus is probably the worst professor I have had in the past three years. He gives no examples during class has extremely hard homework worth 25% of the grade that you get zero guidance on and expects everyone to know far more calculus than this course requires. Avoid this class with him at all costs
You will be staring at the homework assignments for hours with no idea where to begin. Over complicates economics for a non-econ major with unnecessary notations everywhere.
Exams were fairly straightforward but the homework assignment were extremely difficult with no clear examples. Course content is pretty interesting and Rasmus is a good communicator. Only problems with the class were his hw assignment and the fact that he would frequently miss his office hours.
Super tough and somewhat confusing but Lentz clearly is very knowledgeable about labor market and job search. No book and a ton of notes on the board that can get messy at times. Homework is impossible and no examples to get you started/guide you. Very nice guy though and genuinely passionate about teaching and the students, and a nice curve.
Grading was fair. Genuinely interested in his students' understanding of the material. Need to do some outside work, but can easily find him in his office. He is happy to help you during his office hours, or at some other scheduled time. Course material is interesting, and he's mostly a friendly guy.
absolutely terrible. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. doesn't explain homeworks or tests. Scribbles notes on board and erases them before they're explained. nothing about this class was enjoyable
