Course is designed down to a science. Some readings are mandatory, others are not. Quizzes become increasingly difficult. Problem sets are consistently difficult. Exams are generally difficult. Generous grading for all assignments. One can reference an enormous catalogue of past content for additional help. The course is extremely rewarding.
Logic changed me. The most well-prepared class ever. Peter gives clear lectures throughout the semester and there's little confusion about content if you pay active attention to class The last 2 weeks' content is challenging, so work on more problems. A very uncommon question appears on the final, but if you do RECENT past exams you should be good.
He is my model
Professor Vranas has designed this course to be more difficult than those taught by other professors and it is very rewarding. A student who seeks to gain a sound foundation in logic and is willing to work hard towards that end should take this course. Earning an A is rare but very possible and it is also very difficult to earn less than a B.
Professor Vranas is great, but this class in itself was the most challenging course I have taken in college. Do not take if math doesn't come easy to you.
Prof. Vranas is great and although logic can be hard he teaches very thoroughly. You do not have to be good at high-level math but I wouldn't take it if you don't like math. If you want to do well in this class you should go to every lecture and if you have a Discussion it is highly recommended to go to work through problems.
I took the course as a 4 week course in the summer and it is one of my favorite classes I've taken at UW. Professor Vranas comes off as a little awkward, but was very engaging, kind, and thorough. Also did a great job leading class discussions and the topics covered were all interesting. Decent amount of reading but otherwise an easy and fun class.
More math than philosophy, don't take if you don't like proofs (it's all proofs), fascinating subject matter but can be very difficult to grasp, find people and make a group for bonus points on the problem sets, very clear lecturer and answers questions well, definitely take if you like problem-solving
Peter is probably the cutest professor ever and he knows so much, but he is not a conversationalist and it is really hard to get ahold of him. It is not his fault he is just so incredibly brilliant he cannot understand how people do not understand logic. Do yourself a favor if you take this class find friends! It will help with problem sets.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Vranas is clear, concise and always gets straight to the point in lectures. This class is definitely hard and youll have to put in work, but I found myself able to understand and do well based off of lectures alone. Hes not the most approachable guy, but hes passionate and knows what hes talking about
In terms of explaining the course material, Peter is phenomenal. Lectures were always clear/concise, even when the course material got more complex, and he was very responsive to student questions. He is not the most easily-approachable or accessible professor outside of the lectures, but the class and all the grading policies were very fair.
Great instructor!
It is true that the last exam can be very hard. You will be fine if you do a lot of practice problems outside of class. Peter really knows the subject matter and delivers clearly in class. Take his classes!
Peter Vranas does a fine job explaining the subject matter. But that's all he does. He told us not to email him with questions and is not responsive to questions in class. Scheduled quizzes to be taken online between 1am and 10am just before class. Didn't appear to coordinate with his TA on how things should be graded. Overall terrible experience.
I took this class online because it was 2020. My biggest issue with him was that he did not tailor the class for online at all. That being said, it is a tough class but he gives enough non complex work that you will get a very good sense of what you are learning as long as you actually do the homework. There are a lot of things he does to help.
Logic can be dry but Prof. Vranas explains it very clearly. If you can manage to pay attention you should be well prepared to do well in the class. You will need to practice outside of class if you intend to do well. Also beware, this isn't a traditional philosophy course... it's more akin to math.
He is a really good instructor. Logic can be a dry and difficult subject but he really explained the materials super clearly and thus makes it not hard to understand. As for grading, there will be extra credit for group homework so this can balance off the difficult exams. Definitely take his class!!!
He is organized and clear on what's expected of you. He always hands out the answers to the homework right after you turn it in, and the homework is always returned the next class. Textbook is not needed. He uploads practice problem sets and also every past exam since 2007 online. Be wary, the material in the third part of the course is very hard.
By far, the most organized professor I've ever had. He follows his syllabus to the letter (even though he calls it 'tentative'). A very, very generous grader. If you are good with math and logic, his courses don't require much attendance, as all course content is in a packet of handouts. But that being said, his lectures are always fantastic.
Vranas is seriously the cutest old man I have ever seen and is truly passionate about his field. He has structured the class so that while attendance isn't mandatory, going to lecture is incredibly beneficial and is necessary to get a good grade. The material is difficult, but the class makes you think and has a pretty lenient grading policy.
Prof. Vranas was amazing. While the subject is difficult to learn, he has done an amazing job laying out the course in a way that is easy to follow. His handouts are very helpful, and weekly problem sets were good practice. Very important to attend lecture to see problems worked out on the board. Exams are tricky but graded extremely fairly.
If you put in the work outside of class and study for quizzes, you will enjoy coming to class. Peter is not the most outgoing or accessible professor but he clearly is passionate about his field and wants his students to succeed, and his sense of humor is great. Exams can be difficult but grading is lenient.
Difficult, but his grading policy is very leinient and clear. Can be bad at answering "stupid" questions. Expects you to keep up with content. If you do the work, his teaching style is refreshingly direct. Personally one of my favorite profs. Would recommend if you're willing to work. Also had for PHIL512. Sometimes seems like a logic machine.
Vranas teaches a hard subject in a very fair way. It can be difficult sometimes to understand what he is saying, because the problems he presents are extremely complicated. But he is probably one of the best professors to actually teach the subject. Attend the class, take notes, do the homework, and you'll succeed. He structures it that way.
It was a good class, with very fair grading criteria. The class made me a stronger thinker, and I would recommend it for anyone wanting to improve their thought processes.
As for Prof. Vranas, he is knowledgeable and experienced. He teaches this class every semester and he is organized and clear of what he is teaching. As for this class, as some people who have already mentioned, the first two parts of the course are easy and the last part is super hard. Definitely put work for the final. Easy AB but not A.
The most concise professor I've ever had, by a long shot. Answers questions explicitly and gives well defined information. Unintentionally funny. (Note that this is basically an elementary Maths class, so don't expect Vranas to go too deep into philosophical aspects)
Makes the course unnecessarily complicated and tedious. He may know what he's talking about, but the problem sets and exams are always more difficult than the material went over in class. Class is incredibly boring and material is completely useless. Only need an 80 for an AB, but not easy to get an A. Take it with a different professor if you can.
Alright professor, can be boring and will lose your interest. In class material was so much easier than problem sets and exams. I often found myself working on them for hours and still received a terrible grade.
Very clear and amicable professor--really knows his stuff. Grading policy is very lenient, though material can be challenging. First two exams were super easy, but the last was almost impossibly difficult. Problem sets are challenging but not too bad. Still, an easy B-AB.
Prof Vranas is unintentionally charming and funny. He is a solid teacher, and he manages class time very well. He really wants his students to learn and succeed. The third part of the course is HARD, and exams and problem sets are always significantly more difficult than what is covered in class, so do your best in the beginning of the course.
Professor Vranas is great at teaching the subject and material. He is funny and his lectures are informative and entertaining. Although not mandatory, I would highly recommend not missing any lectures especially in the final 1/3 of the semester as it is becomes incredibly difficult, but doable with the right amount of effort.
I took two Logic courses with Professor Vranas, both Intro to Logic (211) and Symbolic Logic (511). He is without a doubt one of the most interesting and thought-provoking people I've ever met. The expectations and curriculum for class were crystal-clear. He is incredibly organized, very on top of the material, and he is also funny and sincere.
Took it 341 as a 3 wk summer class. Very interesting class though i had no interest in the subject. Class is confusing if you don't read. reading load for summer was upwards to 200 pages a night, but TA was wonderful and very helpful with questions and papers making the class easier than i thought.
An OG if there ever was one. But seriously, great experience taking his logic class - amazing TA Jordan and Peter organized everything so well. The material itself is quite useful, the grading scale lenient, and the structure of the course is exceedingly logical - 'nuff said.
I found Prof. Vranas unintentionally hilarious and just as unintentionally charming. He is certainly one of the most memorable professors that I've had. The problem sets are difficult - that is where he has his fun; however, the the exams are not nearly as challenging. Not much reading. Optional readings are not necessary, even to get an A.
He's great and pretty funny. He makes difficult material interesting and clear. I definitely recommend this class but be ready to work.
He's kind of monotone and boring but nevertheless is simply an amazing professor. He knows the material so well and he has an awesome grading scale. It really is impossible not to get lower than a B. There is no textbook for his section and if you do better on a later final he replaces all previous exams with the higher grade. Definitely recommend.
Professor Vranas is simply excellent. His teaching style approaches impeccable. I recommend taking a course with him if you are interested in philosophical logic or philosophy in general. Also, grading within the course is extremely lenient, and hes a funny guy.
Prof. Vranas is GREAT. Yes, the class is a little dry, and the material can be difficult, but Vranas sets up the class so it's almost impossible to fail. He is always reviewing past material and his lectures are crystal clear. If you like logic or mind puzzles, you will get something out of this class. I took it "for fun" and I don't regret it.
Phil 341 was one of the most rewarding classes I've taken at UW! It's hard work, but the grade is not as bad as you expect it to turn out. Just follow him in class and think about stuff he's saying! I feel it was worth it!
Don't miss the in class exams.
The class is really difficult, but the grading scale is very, very lenient. Vranas has a thick accent, but he knows his stuff and he explains everything clearly. If you need to take 211, take it with him.
SO the class is boring and terrible, but i took it as a requirement and he gives extra credit when working in groups on the Hw. GET A GOOD SMART PARTNER and you will do amazing in this class. Homework is much harder than the exams. I would never take another class with him though because he is boring. TA Kevin is unhelpful
Extremely hard class, but very lenient and helpful professor and TA. I got an A even though I don't feel like I really know anything new. Useless subject. Only took it as a requirement. I would never take this class as a choice, but I'm glad I had Vranas.
It's the material, not the teaching
While the subject matter is difficult and, (quite honestly) boring, this prof does an ok job at trying to teach it. I'm glad it was an elementary level class and I wouldn't want to take another one with him, but it wasn't terrible. Also, lenient grader (50%=C) and gives extra credit for working in groups. Our TA (Jordan) was stellar too.
Difficult class, prepare to read a lot every night (summer class). easiest lecture I've ever had to sit through, not boring at all. Interesting content, if you do the work it is pretty easy.
Worst teacher I've ever had at any level. Not good about meeting with students at all and I found the homework very difficult even though I understood every example that he went over in class. The exams are also ungodly hard! Do not take this professor!
The class was so difficult that several very intelligent graduate students would have done better on the final if they had guessed. He assigns an outrageous amount of work and the exams are so difficult they might as well be written in a foreign language. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
The amount of work for this course is absolutely outrageous, and the exams are so hard that it does very little good even studying for them; the material goes way beyond anything discussed in class or in the readings. Do not take this professor.
