Pernille is the most caring professor I have ever had! She was so understanding about students struggling with online classes and stress due to COVID. She was so helpful throughout the process of papers and projects and gave great evidence on how to improve. I felt very comfortable reaching out via email or attending office hours! Highly recommend!
I absolutely LOVED Dr. Ipsen. She's super nice and it's really helpful to meet with her about upcoming papers. Overall a pretty easy and straightforward class. Reading is very manageable and the papers aren't too difficult. Highly recommend this class and I hope to take more classes with Dr. Ipsen in the future!
Typical Humanities class. Graded on 4 papers, participation in discussion, and weekly discussion posts. The First 3 papers are 250 words, final is a longer paper. Pernille was always willing to go over ideas for the paper and discuss anything. She was super nice and would remember you and the things you tell her. The class is interesting, take it!
Professor Ipsen is ok, but definitely not spectacular. She contributed little to my learning experience, especially when most lectures were simply general info off slides or discussion of previously-read texts. The library assignments had to be written a certain way. Overall, she seems like a nice person, but not someone to seek out for a class.
This class is awesome! I am a science major and still found all the information we learned in class interesting. There is a lot of weekly readings sometimes more than 60 pages, but the main portion of your grade is papers and participation. Awesome class
The lectures are fairly interesting, but not necessary to attend to do well. The class does not have tests, only short quizzes that are based mostly off of readings. The readings are very time consuming. The majority of the work for the class is readings, two midterm papers, and one final paper. The papers are graded somewhat hard.
Ipsen is a gem! This woman knows and loves history with a passion. Learning form her is a real treat every Tuesday and Thursday. No tests, only a research paper. She is a genius and really cares. I love going to her office hours just because she is so kind. TAKE HER CLASS! You won't regret it
Decent lecturer, but be prepared for her to read off the slides. All lecture power points are posted online as well, so in some cases you show up to lecture just for participation. A few quizzes, not very fairly put together or graded, papers make up most of your grade, and a lot of reading some weeks, but not completely necessary to do well.
I took this class for an interesting humanities class that would be an easy A and that's not what I got. Class was extremely boring and although there were no tests (just papers), they were graded very poorly and TAs gave almost no feedback. Class can be hard to deal with if you sway to the right of the political spectrum.
GWS 101 is a great class, Ipsen is an good professor. Although she presents helpful material to aid in students' learning, her speaking is not the best. Still loved this class though. The material is very relevant and extends far beyond women's studies to interdisciplinary issues about masculinity, race, class, etc. Class is easy--only papers.
While this class is not an easy A, I would definitely recommend it. The content is very applicable and illuminating. Pernille is a professor who truly cares about her students and her work.
So so sweet. Incredible teacher and person. her lectures are clear and honestly my favorite of the whole week. interesting content that she shows in a great way - not just powerpoints but videos too. some of the weekly readings are quite long (ugh) but overall great class and teacher
Her class was pretty easy & straightforward. No tests, just 3 papers throughout the semester. Readings can be long but they are very interesting. Really glad I took the class with her.
Kindest Professor. Very knowledgeable
I have no idea how she has a high rating. She is one of the worst lecturers I've had and only reads off of the slides which are posted online so the only reason to come to lecture is for attendance points. She is not concise with her words and babbles on about useless information. This could be such a good class if there was a better professor.
Nicest teacher at the UW, she clearly cares about her students. Most helpful history class in terms of learning about primary sources and the like.
She's an amazing professor who really goes above and beyond for preparing for her lectures and keeping the class interesting. It's clear she values your feedback. She doesn't give an exams though, just a paper at the end of term.
Love Professor Ipsen! She is genuinely interested in all topics surrounding gender, equality, and even recent issues in the US and around the world. She tries to stay neutral when presenting information and encourages students to disagree and form their own opinions on the topics. Favorite class and professor so far at UW!
By far one of the best professors who engages students in all the topics she teaches over the course. Her class is so insightful and she is so passionate about gender woman studies. Her class always made me want to learn more about gender woman studies. Highly recommend Professor Ipsen.
Great professor! She is super cute and loves to get people interested in the subjects. No tests, just 3 essays throughout the semester. The readings are sometimes pretty long but actually pretty interestng! I recommend taking this class with Prof. Ipsen, she's great, fun, and its an easy A. also shows a lot of movies too which is nice
Ipsen is a great prof. She has a bit of an accent (Denmark) but she's really nice. She doesn't believe in exams so there is only reading for discussion (not much) and 3 papers. Definitely a good class for GWS majors and those of you trying to fill a humanities credit!
She was one of the best professors I've had. She is extremely passionate about teaching. Always willing to help her students to ensure that each student feels successful in the classroom. Great professor!
She was learning right along with the students. She was also passionate about the topics discussed and seemed to really care about what the students had to say. Take good notes in class and you should do fine.
my only complaint about prof ipsen is that she is rather repetitive and wants you to know everything about feminism. she changed this course too and it was completely different from what was in the course guide, so watch out for that.
