Likes to "show off" who she has worked with. Seems a little insecure. It's almost like she spent more time trying to explain why her field was relevant/important, instead of actually teaching material. Uses a few studies I thought were bogus to justify the scientific method/relevance. It made me have less respect for emotional psych. repetitive.
Professor Niedenthal was by far my favorite professor that I have had at UW Madison! She is very good at teaching and most of the information is from studies she has personally conducted.
I loved this class and Niedenthal. Extremely interesting content and lectures. She is so clearly passionate about the subject and presents a lot of her own research within the course. Comes across as a little intimidating at first but in a way that makes you do well. Couldn't recommend this class enough!!!!
Assignments are super easy. Most of the work you will do in this class is reading the textbook chapters each week and studying for the exams. Exams are a good chunk of your grade and sometimes she tries to trick you with the "which is the best answer" but if you know the information you will be fine. Experienced researcher and interesting lectures.
I really enjoyed this class! Unlike many other psych classes, there are a few short writing assignments outside of just exams and papers, which I appreciated. Prof. Niedenthal is super knowledgable, caring, and fun. Her lectures can be unengaging at times, but mostly good. Textbook is a bit dense at times but did help me understand things better.
Professor Niedenthal comes across as very knowledgable on course material and is also really engaging, which is rare to find in a professor. She seems to genuinely care about her students, and I highly recommend Psych 508 to anyone wanting to learn about the psychology of emotions.
I had high expectations for this class knowing about Prof. Niedenthal's background in the emotions field. Unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed by the nature of the class. The material is engaging and relevant, however, the MC exams are somewhat difficult and are weighed heavily. There are few interactive activities in lecture.
All her lectures are inaccessible outside classroom, which makes the class extremely unfriendly to those who have to be absent for classes due to medical issues. When being asked, all she gave is "go ask for notes from others", which sounds quite irresponsible and indifferent while all she needs to do is to upload a transcript or recording.
Good professor and class. Paula is knowledgable and passionate with good examples and intriguing material. The tests are mostly based on lecture with some textbook questions. Sometimes difficult but you can do decent as long as you pay attention and skim the textbook. Other assignments are easy and participation helps your grade at the end.
Human Emotions was a really cool class! I thought the exams were really difficult so I recommend doing a lot of studying beforehand. I also really enjoyed the lectures, they were interesting and Prof. Niedenthal would sometimes add extra TedTalk videos for us to watch that were also super cool! This is a good depth class to take and I recommend!
A-student Prof is boring, slow in lectures, unengaging & uninteresting. One lecture was in a ppt format which I couldn't speed up and I wanted to die. Ignores questions on Canvas during pandemic virtual learning. If responds she is friendly & courteous. Exam comprehension required not provided by lectures. Not terrible, but not special.
Amazing professor! Truly an expert in the field who is extremely passionate about her research. Exams are difficult and based on her textbook, so you definitely need to read to do well on the exams. Grade based on 3 exams and 1 paper, hard to come back if you bomb one of the exams. Content/Research is very interesting so definitely recommend!
I loved Professor Niedenthal! She is very well-respected in her field and you can tell she is passionate about what she studies. Her lectures were upbeat and engaging, depening on if you find the course content to be interesting. Exams were not cumulative and multiple choice. Learning about human emotions from Niedenthal is a class I'd recommend!
I enjoyed the content of this course but rarely attended lecture because the professor wrote the textbook, so it is possible to choose between attending lecture and reading the book and still do well. Exams were pretty typical for a psych course but lots of "trick" questions. There is one final paper that they grade pretty easily.
Niedenthal is knowledgable and passionate about the subject, and I found lectures interesting (slides always online) The exams were SO difficult, even after thoroughly preparing, I still didn't do very well. The final was ridiculous, dropped my grade from a B to a C. Good prof, interesting class, but difficult to get a decent grade in my opinion
Good option for a depth course. The professor is very knowledgeable on the subject, passionate, uses many examples of studies to back up her lectures and overall does a good job teaching content that can be a little dull. The content is not difficult but she does test specifically from things in the textbook but the reading does not take long.
This class was so easy! If you go to class, you barely need to do anything to prepare for the exams. All I did was go to class and quickly skim the textbook before exams and I got an A on all of the exams. The information in this class is easy to understand and could probably all be taught in about 2 weeks instead of over an entire semester.
Niedenthal's lectures are well-organized but could be boring. You could learn more by just reading the textbook. The class is tough and hard to get an A cause there's no real opportunity to boost your grade and no curve. Three not cumulated exams, one paper. Beware of the last exam.
Lectures are online! But her experience enhances her lectures significantly.
Paula is incredibly knowledgable about many areas of human emotion research, and I liked learning from her. Also, she has many interesting anecdotes from when she lived abroad, which I enjoyed. Sometimes her lectures were a little dry, but overall hers is a good class.
Great Teacher, test are easy. Extra Credit is also provided, which is worth more than it should be. Overall I still learned a lot. Most be people got A's and AB's
