Paula was a fantastic professor and I enjoyed her class. But she grades with swing grades, so if you're not in the boundaries of a grade, you will be rounded down. For an A, the grading scale is a 94-95 out of 95, or a 98% or above. While I enjoyed the class, this ensured that while I got above a 95% on all papers, I received a B in the class.
Take this class if you're a Philos major, don't if you're not. It is not as real-world applicable as modern philos, which should be obvious. Paula is funny, but granted a little boring, yet very passionate. Her swing grade system is reasonable, but you need to do well for an A. Her tutorial system is very fun: papers with a discussion about it.
This class was only made more enjoyable by somebody as knowledgeable and passionate about ancient greek philosophy as Paula. While lectures may seem to run slow, she nonetheless follows a clear and orderly mode of instruction with the occasional deadpan humor in the mix. Really immerse yourself in the readings, and you will do great come tutorials.
She wasn't my favorite professor in the department. Her lectures are pretty boring, and her voice honestly put me to sleep most days. I don't like her "swing" grade strategy or revising the grading scale. I just wish she counted attendance and we were graded normally on the papers. The ancients are pretty underwhelming, too.
Lectures are impressively boring and the only reason to show up is for the participation grade. I signed in online for lectures but was never present at my computer thereduring. If you enjoy philosophy that has practical implications on your life and can improve it in some manner, avoid this class.
Professor Gottlieb offered this class online for the Fall 2022 semester due to health problems. Having her class online through Zoom was just as effective as in-person. Participation somewhat matters, but the major of your grade is based on three papers. Super sweet and made learning sometimes confusing material fun.
This Professors Class prompted me to unenroll in all future philosophical courses occurring at UW Madison. I recommend that true philosophers avoid.
One of the kindest, smartest people Ive ever met. Clearly an expert on Aristotle and it shows in her calmness in the classroom and flexibility- she clearly knows exactly what you need to know and what can be compromised. Paula has a dry sense of humor that I absolutely love. If you show genuine interest and attend class, youll be successful.
Prof. Gottlieb is one of the little-known gems in the philosophy department. She's very kind, and her lectures are always very clear and logical, if a bit dry. Her class is graded on the basis of three papers and accompanying "tutorials". Swing grades are determined by participation. The tutorial method is nice to look at the material more deeply.
No dates on the syllabus, you have to attend lecture for that
Can easily get an AB or B in this class without showing up to more than 1 lecture a month. No, I'm really not kidding. Probably only about 30% of the class regularly attends lectures. Grades are determined on 3 fairly easy 1500 word papers that can be mostly done without any content from lecture. Take this if looking for a quick/easy Phil. credit!
A professor with a wealth of knowledge about Greek Philosophy, but her lectures are very, very dry. Make sure to stay up to date (or ahead) on readings. She uses the tutorial method (3 straightforward papers with face-to-face feedback) which is extremely helpful for intimate understanding of the material.
Nicest professor I've had. While earning high grades are difficult, overall the grading is very fair. The grade for 430 was entirely based on 3-1500 word papers, making each high pressure but very manageable. Favorite part was the tutorials where you meet with the T/a or professor to discuss your paper. Great learning experience & opportunity.
Dr. Gottlieb is one of the nicest professors I have had. She is very fair. It is difficult to get an A, but it's supposed to be. It's a 400 level class! She has an interesting take on Aristotle and she was open to discussion.
Aristotle's Ethics. Prof Gottlieb is a very knowledgeable scholar of Aristotle, & it was a privilege to spend the entire semester working on one text - the Nichomachean Ethics. There are three tutorials throughout the semester, like in 430. You write a 5 p. paper, meet with her and 1 other student. Each reads your own aloud & you discuss for 1 hr.
Very interesting course. You get a good grounding the Platonic dialogues and in Aristotle's texts. Not too much reading assigned, so that you can focus on the philosophical content of each portion. Professor is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. Excellent course to take if you're interested in philosophy.
As a philosophy major, I found the class interesting at times, but often quite boring. Paula is a very kind lady, and the tutorials provide a solid foundation as to writing better philosophical papers. In summary, I would only take the class if required to do so.
boo. i'm a philosphy major and this is the most uninteresting, let-down of a class i've ever taken in the department. she's nice though.
Paula lectures in an organized manner which is a HUGE perk in the phil dept. Other profs just do the whole stream of consciousness thing. She's easy to follow and always friendly and helpful.
3 tutorials(papers which you write and then read/discuss with the TA/Prof and one other student. To get an A you need to be original, which can be hard to do because the readings are two thousand years old. She's extremely knowledgeable about ancient philosophy.
she's good at explaining the difficult passages. the tutorials weren't bad at all. i got the rare 95 just once. haha. she seemed more nervous in one on one contact than in lecture. nice lady.
Very nice and very clear. A little boring at times but you will learn a lot about Ancient Philosophy if you pay attention and do the readings. The tutorials are interesting if not ideal assignments.
This was my first philosophy class (I'm a non-major and it seemed interesting) and I only felt lost in philosophic jargon a few times. Gottlieb presents the information in an organized manner and the reading is minimal but effective. Grades are based on three 5-page essays which are not too bad. Hard to get an A, but AB isn't too hard.
lectures unbearably boring. entire grade based on 3 pretty easy tutorials. pretty much stopped going to lecture and still did fine in the class
Boring.
Paula is passionate about the subject and presents the material clearly. However, when students are unwilling to engage in discussion, the lectures can be very boring
