Professor Hernandez is awesome! I found her lectures to always be captivating and relevant to present day issues. The homework was also interesting along with the in-class activities. Overall, you can tell Professor Hernandez is incredibly passionate about her work which I found makes for an amazing class!
She was a super cool professor and person, but the assignments had very little guidance/unclear instructions. I struggled a lot to figure out what she wanted from them.
Paola is a great professor and this class is one of the best I have ever taken.
waaaay too much homework and readings.
Paola is intelligent, kind hearted, and passionate, especially about this course on the border. The content is great, you learn so many things that would be hard to seek out on your own. The course itself is the most work I have had in a Spanish class. Very writing heavy. And group project at the end as well. Would take it again tho! Thanks Paola!!
Passionate about the course content
Great professor
I wish I hadn't taken this class with her. Take it with someone else if you can.
Paola is by far the best Spanish professor I have ever had at UW. She clearly sets expectations, and as long as you do the assigned readings and answer the discussion questions thoroughly, you will do fine on the exams and in the class overall! Paola is the reason I am not afraid of and why I do not hate literature anymore!
I would not recommend taking a class with her.
Do yourself a favor and don't ever take a class with Paola. Her expectations of students are unreasonable and she's not understanding of circumstances that affect students outside of class.
I love Paola. She is the best spanish teacher I had at Madison. That being said, I also used to refer to this class as my scary Spanish class. I'm a spanish major and this was one of my highest level courses and it wasn't easy, but if you do the reading and UNDERSTAND it, you'll love her. The class takes work, but she also is a fair grader.
Paola is very nice and very interested in the course material that she teaches, which really helps you stay involved in lectures. She grades heavily off of participation and attendance in class, but if you do your work and come to class and participate and show that you care you will do very well.
Paola is a fantastic professor. I've had her 3 times, including for 223 which is just a hard class to teach. She is really nice and helpful but will not let you slack. If you don't keep up on the readings and participate, then don't take the class. But if you keep on top of things then Paola's classes are interesting, and fairly graded!
Paola is great. Awesome accent and very helpful.
This lady is nuts. If you can get a different professor for 223, I would recommend it. Otherwise, make sure you have Courtney as your TA! She knows her stuff and is a fair grader.
Try to get Courtney as a TA= she is extremely helpful and will aid your understanding. Paola is a great lecturer and most of tests involve main points that have been repeated often. DO the reading, in Spanish, as it will help you learn the language and do better on the tests.
Great teacher, and try to get Courtney Lanz as a TA. Paola's accent is amazing, and she's really knowledgeable. Sit in the front because to get distracted in these superfast lectures will be your downfall.
Paola is very knowledgeable and helpful. Also, her agrentinian accent is awesome.
Sit in the front row- she flies through lecture and if you're in the back you'll get easily distracted since its all a bunch of names and dates. Beware of exams, memorize small details- GET COURTNEY AS A TA!! They didn't grade the papers that harshly- you'll get an A if you do the work.
Refuses to put her lecture notes online, however goes faster than you can write everything down. Exams are all about memorizing names/places/dates, so not hard if you're good at that. Papers were graded fairly easily. Overall interesting
She really knows what she is talking about but lectures can be a bit dry and long. Participation is key to getting a good grade so speak up right away. Essays are easy A's. Only write down the important people, places, and themes in lecture. You only have to know what's on the study guide for the tests.
Paola teaches the FIG section of 223, only freshmen. The book can be very confusing, but she explains it somewhat (ask when confused) and it ties in with the other courses nicely. Lectures are basically dictated off a powerpoint. Two simple papers (get them edited by friends) and four high-school style tests. Not horrible, but not phenomenal.
Paola's tests sometimes cover things hardly mentioned in lecture and not at in the book. Lecture is very easy: basically a powerpoint presentation on reading for the day. The fact that she isn't as knowledgeable as most professors is a bit disappointing.
