He's a sweet guy but he's a bit quirky to say the least. A bit hard to follow but I could see the joy in his eyes, especially during the Polya enumeration unit. I probably would never ever take a class with him again but I hope he does well for himself :)
I have no idea with his notes on the blackboard
Math 475 was a pretty dense math class and I don't really think I would recommend it to other CS majors. I really enjoyed having Paul as a lecturer but I don't think I would recommend the class overall.
He's definitely a little socially awkward, but he's incredibly knowledgeable, approachable regarding mathematics, and passionate about combinatorics. I learned so much about combinatorics this semester and it turned from an area of math I dreaded to one I love. Would highly recommend for MATH 475. Work hard, and you'll get a lot from the course.
Very bad at teaching, lectures are essentially useless as he reads over the notes. The textbook is used mainly for homework questions. He has no clear grading scheme for tests and docks a lot of points for minor mistakes.
A good mathematician.
Lecture was mostly proficient to complete homework. Professor is not very engaging, but is knowledgeble and able to answer questions. Exams were take-home, open note/book. About half of the exam tended to be more difficult than problems in homework or lecture, but good understanding of the material and open note/book makes the exams doable.
Was fine at teaching math, bad at communicating anything besides math. Grading scheme was almost nonexistant, no correlation to final grades what we achieved on our canvas grades except the end of semseter grade.
Lectures are useless - both for doing the HW and the exams so just focus on reading the txtbk because that's where he gets exam questions anyway. Never had a math class at Madison I didn't like, but I do now after taking this one. Topic progression feels random & feels like he doesn't care to actually teach. Don't take this course with this prof.
Not bad if you put the time/effort in. Most useful thing is doing the homework thoroughly and most if not all of the practice problems in the book. He also has many practice exams that are helpful. BUT he wasn't very nice, very condescending, VERY temperamental. Yelled at a student for "not moving quick enough". Interesting material, mean prof.
Side note: Terwilliger wears this same white button-up shirt and black pants combo every single day, dunno if it's voluntary or if I should buy the man a new shirt. Lectures are largely proofs you'll never use again but there are occasionally things you need to know so it sucks. Homework is feasible but you gotta read the thing lecture wont help
At least 75% of the tests come straight out of the textbook, so if you do enough practice problems, you'll recognize most of the questions on the test. What he doesn't do a good job of explaining, the book will cover well. Good professor for an easy A.
His exams are problems right out of the book which is nice. However, if you make a small error in your calculations it is rare that you would get above a 3/10 for the problem, so don't expect any type of partial credit on exam. His lectures are boring and dull. Overall, this class is tough and having him makes it tougher. Would NOT recommend.
This class sucks. Professor would literally just rewrite notes that are posted on his website. Can't apply anything he writes on the board to the homework. The TA is nowhere to be seen. Grading is super strict. Asked him to do more practical examples and he said he'd think about it, and then just didn't. IT IS AWFUL. DO NOT DO!!!
Didn't really say much except for what was being written on the board. Homework was entirely out of the book and was unrealistic in expectations. They were due every week and could easily take 20+ hours to achieve partial completion. Exams were somewhat easy but unrelated to homework, didn't know what to study for.
Prof Terwilliger is a really nice person. He is not a harsh grader. As long as you put in effort you will get A. Also exam questions all come from book questions, which means if you do all the book Questions you will receive full mark in exam.
Lectures are extremely boring, and he does not engage with the class well. Homework takes longer as the semester goes on.
A bit of an odd character. He presents material somewhat well but quickly and sometimes illegibly. The test questions are taken directly from previous exams and the text, but the grading is harsh. Nearly no feedback is ever given.
If you really love math and cares learning knowledge, not only your grade, you will love him. He may make a certain class harder than it should be, but this is all because he knows so many knowledge and wants to share it with you. Therefore, his class is helpful, not only to this single class, but to your whole math career.
Not a good lecturer. He goes really fast, and his writing is difficult to readunderstand. However, the subject fits very well with the textbook and is easy to follow. Exam questions are taken straight from the textbook, and he provides solutions in advance so you can study. It's easy to get a good grade if you put in the work.
One of the worst lecturers I have had so far. He is alright at explaining the material he has prepared but is completely at a loss for words whenever someone asks a question. The material itself isn't impossible and follows the book quite nicely, but because this professor is so inflexible the class is harder than it needs to be. Avoid if you can.
He is probably one of the worst lecturers i've had. This being said, I found that he is very helpful if you visit his office hours. The tests are very straight forward and can be studied for easy, by looking at previous tests. I have had my share of awful professors, but Professor Terwilliger is not one of them. I recommend taking his class.
Super straight forward, tests were literally the homework problems with different numbers. Decent Professor
Avoid this professor like the plague. Material isn't that bad, but he makes this class worse than it should be
He is by far the worst teacher I've had at this University, and this is my last semester. When I went to ask him for help, he said no. He also wouldn't provide a grading scale upon request. He likes to post special cases of everything on the exams. Avoid at all costs.
This guy is the best math professor I have ever had. He is going over very interesting examples in lectures that are very helpful for the HW and the exam
Some people really liked him, in 475 but I personally think he is a terrible professor. If 1/3rd of the class drops the class after 1st midterm it really means something is wrong. Moreover giving 20% of the class D and F isn't something amazing either. Don't care about your learning, material was not that hard as he made it. Avoid him at all cost.
A nice guy- he basically goes over the book, but did so in a relatively straightforward and easy to follow manner. As someone else mentioned, assignments and exams are reasonable. Not an incredible professor, but I would take a course with him again.
Really enjoyed this class and professor. Obviously the material was difficult, but he presented it very clearly and did a lot of examples in class. Homework was very reasonable, as were exams. He was flexible and didn't try to rush through things... moved a few assingments and exams back to give us plenty of time. A nice guy as well!
A very awkward professor in general. The class is pretty easy, although he does over complicate a few subjects. All exam questions are pulled directly from the book. I never did homework and am getting a B in the class.
Not a very good prof. He took what should have been an easy class and made it way to difficult. It may not have helped that the TA couldn't speak english. Not a good class.
Not a great professor. Took what should have been an easy math class and made it way too difficult. I thought the TA could have taught the class better and he could barely speak English.
Terwilliger was very socially awkward and he took what should be a very easy math class and made it more difficult than it really had to be. He doesn't assign relevant homework and he selects random problems for you to do for the exams. He was also very poor at answering student questions. Not a hard class, but he doesn't help at all.
He doesn't assign homework and bases the tests off random problems from the book. His finals are not a good measure of what your final will be like because of this. You have four midterms and a final. One of the midterms can be dropped.
Yes, he wears the same clothes everyday. On two hot days I spotted him going for a run in the same clothes from class. Quite interesting.
I dreaded going to class every day. It was so boring. We just went over the homework that was due that day. Don't try to ask him questions, it doesn't work.
This professor wore the same clothes everday and was a really awkward person socially. If you ask him a queestion that deviates from his method, he got really flustered and didn't know what to do. He was a really nice guy though.
