I love Pat - he has changed the course of my career and become one of my mentors. I was in his honors discussion section and loved every minute of it. He is such an amazing person, professor, mentor, and friend, and passionate about sharing his knowledge to empower students. Pat is hilarious, personable, kind, and takes the time to get to know you
Pat is a great lecturer and overall just an interesting guy. I found his course to be difficult, but stomachable. The quizzes/exams were hard, as others have said, and were often quoted from more specific parts of the lectures. They also included a wide variety of spelling errors/typos, making them that much harder.
I love dr remington. he was an amazing teacher. the class was what i expected but Pat made it so much better.
lectures had pretty good guest speakers and the assignments and quizzes were based off of lectures really well so there were no surprises. he did a great job of explaining each topic and connecting them when needed and I think overall this class was worth my time
I think Prof. Remington is very charismatic and kind, but there was so much information on exams it was hard to study and do well. I also found an excessive amount of typos and errors on the quizzes, which made them 10x more stressful. Many people love this course, but I found it to be much more difficult than I think it should have been.
Dr. Remington is really passionate about public health and does a great job putting it into his teaching. He keeps lecture interesting and engaging. Exams can be difficult since this class covers so much but with studying is manageable! Huge curves.
Pop Health 370 was one of the most interesting classes I have taken, the discussion sections were so engaging and our section leader was amazing. The only issue with the class is its really only graded on two exams, which were hard. But if you study and put in the work its very manageable. Students complain a lot about this class, but I loved it.
He's a great professor, you can tell that he loves what he does and is very knowledgable. Exams and quizzes were tough but I think that's just because this course covers a lot of topics. He removed commonly missed questions from quiz grading if they caused a lot of confusion and curved the midterm exam, so he definitely wants his students succeed.
Patrick is such a nice guy and you can tell he loves his job. Class is not a breeze, exams are tough, but doable. Recommend for Remington himself.
AMAZING professor. Probably my favorite that I've had at UW so far. Lectures and discussions are super interesting and you can tell he is incredibly knowledgeable. I don't have a single bad thing to say about this guy
I love him, want him to be my grandpa, take pop health 370.
100%, one of my favorite classes through college. It's a somewhat difficult class, especially the exams, but manageable. They allow you to work on the quizzes with others which helps. However, the final exam is cumulative, which is difficult simply because of the massive amount of material throughout the course.
I absolutely loved this class! Thought most of the invited guest speakers gave great lectures and were very qualified. Dr. Remington is awesome, very invested and really knows what he's talking about. Very interesting content but you do have to work a bit to get an A. Exams are fair but not easy. Would recommend if interested in public health.
Lectures are interesting w/ many guest speakers. Answer learning objectives from start (on exam) and don't just memorize info or you won't pass. Exams are difficult even if you study but curved. Insane amount of reading, not worth it for the credits. No need to attend lecture: power points/video posted online. Attend discussion for a good grade
He is such a great guy but the class overall isn't great. Pros: lecture is optional, interesting discussion sections, exams are doable and everything can be found on Quizlet. Cons: graded by very few things, attendance for discussion is extremely important, a lot of content
I took Chem 104 the same semester as this class, and chem was way easier. Super interesting class but extremely tough exams. If not for the curves I would've done terribly. I would avoid taking this class if your GPA matters. Don't bother doing the study guide- only 3 terms showed up on the midterm and final. Super interesting guest lecturers.
Not worth it if you aren't required to take it. It's 3 credits and there's a slim chance you'll get an A even if you work hard because there are a lot of aspects that are subjective and you'll only get full points if you have a good TA. Interesting material, but in no way prepares you for exams unless you can absorb info through osmosis.
Lectures were pretty dry and hard to pay attention to. Remington was a nice guy and curved the exam well, but study materials for exams were non-existent and questions were specifics heavy. All lectures were recorded, best to watch at 1.5 speed. All quiz answers come directly from the slides.
If youre debating between PHS370 and MEDHIST213 for the global health certificate, take the second. Patrick was a fine but dealing with him & his TAs was a nightmare. Whenever I asked about my grade, he & the TAs would always say, refer to the syllabus. I was 0.03% away from an A but the grading scale is measured to the hundredth. Avoid Patrick.
P. Rem is for sure in my top 3 favorite professors at UW-Madison so far. His lectures were interesting and his experience in the field is reflected in the lectures. Lots of interesting guest speakers as well of various public health careers. Class is super easy if you listen to lectures, attend discussion and turn in the weekly reflections.
Well versed and very intelligent professor. The class is quite straight forward and easy, but make sure you attend all discussion, complete all writing assignments, and just try hard on the quizzes (every other week online, collaboration encouraged). You get out what you put in. Just watch the lectures at 1.5x, take notes, and you should be good.
My absolute favorite professor at UW. We are lucky to have him because boy is he experienced. His lectures were informative and inspiring and teaches you so much valuable information if you want to go into healthcare. The guest lecturers were diverse in topic and equally interesting. A must take!!
Professor Remington is very passionate about his subject and makes his opinions clear through his lectures. This class is very politically biased toward liberal views. Most lectures are done by guest speakers. Recording and slides from lectures are posted online. The information is very important for anyone interested in any health related career.
Really great professor. Lots of guest lecturers in the class, and most of them give really interesting talks. I was worried it was going to be a lot of math because of the epidemiology aspect, but it wasn't. Would highly recommend taking this class.
Wow, what an amazing man. He has so much experience and Madison is lucky to have him. Miss you P. REM
Professor Remington is a good guy who knows his stuff! The class itself is based off of participation, weekly online quizzes (which are tough!), and one final. Reading is essential to do well! This class isn't an easy A, but its possible to get an A with a little hard work!
