Never in my life have I had a prof. who has so little respect for his students. He was so rude on piazza and extremely unhelpful. One time, on piazza, a student said they don't know what they did wrong with a problem, and Hill replies with "me neither." Exams were fair. TA's are very harsh graders, but they were super helpful in office hours
very rude and seems like he doesn't want to help you at all don't know why he chose to be a professor seems like he hates his job
Gives smart(donkey), unhelpful replies on Piazza and that's it. I mean he'll just say "yeah, you're wrong" and give no other direction. Lab materials are a mess and impossible to complete without outside material.
To be honest, I'm not sure what purpose Dr. Hill serves as lab director: the lab materials are disorganized, vague, and inconsistent. Dr Hill himself is very quick to respond on Piazza, but only because he seems to enjoy being a petty tyrant. His answers to student questions are as unhelpful as they are pejorative.
Nick Hill is one of the rudest, most condescending professors I have had. He is never present in lab sessions or really ever, but acts annoyed when you ask a question on piazza as he responds in the most snarky and confusing way possible. It's no wonder nobody wants to go to professor office hours as he would be no help.
Doesn't show his face at all unless student attends office hours (completely TA led), yet is the primary grader. Answers Piazza questions with annoyance and lack of clarity. Writes quizzes that includes foreign content and doesn't give partial credit.
This entire course is instructed by teaching assistants which are given very little support by Hill. He sits in his office and angrily responds to piazza questions, organizes inappropriate quizzes and exams, and a disheveled canvas page. Demeaning during office hours. My TA is often confused by the questions we are given on assessments.
So unhelful on Piazza, feel unsupported in the class besides the helpful TAs.
Nick Hill is disorganized, has little curiosity about how students are finding the course, and is actively unhelpful and demeaning on Piazza. This course was inaccessible to students with disability and a timesink. TAs had to rephrase instructions "Well actually what they want is ____" because they were written so unclearly.
Absolutely ridiculous grading system for this class. I got a 64/65 on a lab report which had an average grade of 55/65 and I received an AB for that report. When I asked Mr. Hill to check if there was a mistake, he simply ghosted me and uploaded the final grades without ever getting back to me. Be prepared to receive very little feedback/help.
The only times I ever interacted with Nick Hill were through piazza. He was by far one of the most unhelpful instructors on there. He doesn't answer questions clearly and dances around the question you ask. "Try drawing out the mechanism." "What do YOU think?" "Idk what you're asking."
Dr. Hill is an OK professor and always willing to help student on piazza but the course is poorly designed with too much work and ridiculously competitive grading criteria (you should pay attention to each detail in your lab report or you get a B or even lower). Thus, if you are in a section with lots of chem genius, a B should be a ideal grade.
Never have I had a professor that has approached teaching a class with such crassness as Hill. Not only are his piazza responses overtly ambiguous, but they are extremely condescending. You can almost sense the discontent through your laptop screen when reading his responses to students' questions. Glad I will no longer have to take this class.
I rarely interacted with Nick, but the few times I went to his office hours he was helpful. The lab is a lot of work, but the curve makes it so over 50% of the students will get a B or better. Also, even if Nick is not your favorite person, if you're struggling with the reports, any TA will meet you more than halfway to help you out in office hours
well this was the worst class I have ever taken in my life. so much work and not worth the credit. not only was nick hill the rudest person I have ever talked to but he is extremely condescending. He has been studying this material forever and made me feel stupid when I would ask a question on piazza . The post labs are hell.
Nick Hill will put in effort when you do. Hes hard, but when you show real effort into learning, he is there for you. Like invite you to his home and tutor you there for you. People complaining probably didnt put in effort like he wanted. Hes passionate and extremely smart. I also love his accent
Dr. Hill, is extremely smart, there is no doubt; however, he treats students like little kids who don't know what the difference between an elephant and a giraffe. On Piazza, he engages in the socratic method, by answering questions with questions, not helpful, despite his quickness to respond. His condescending attitude is not warranted.
WORST INSTRUCTOR OF MY LIFETIME. As a 4.0 STEM student, he is the most useless instructor I've had. I use all provided resources on my own before asking for help and I've never struggled w/ any ochem concepts. His Piazza responses are unnecessarily rude, beyond unhelpful, and he exhibits no regard or support for his students especially being online
Honestly, very rude responses over Piazza, almost as if he were talking to a child. TAs were pretty much unhelpful and didn't cover exam content in the slightest. I felt very much on my own throughout the entire course, even tho I have been joining almost every office hour possible to get help. Seriously avoid at ALL COSTS.
This class is a joke. Teaching staff (minus the TAs) are not helpful, and Hill especially is not helpful whatsoever and rude on Piazza. Please take the O-chem boot camp at a different campus and transfer it over vs. taking this class. For a 2 credit class, this class expects too much out of its students. Do better.
very rude professor and I felt like i was being attacked most of the time when talking with him. would never take a class taught by him again
Seems to be okay in the lab videos but god help you if he responds to your piazza post. Might as well be asking a brick for help. Super unhelpful and likes to respond in riddles
If I could rate zero, I would. He would routinely insult students, not answer questions, and just made even the most limited of interaction insufferable. I don't know what this dudes problem is, but honestly the entire 344 crew is garbage. Madison deserves better.
Absolutely terrible. He has a horrible attitude that is only matched by his highly inflated ego. Rude and disrespectful. One of those professors that makes you wonder how someone gets into the teaching career.
Hes a jerk. I didnt even do bad in the course, but when I did go and ask for help, he was one of the most apathetic professors ever. His piazza responses are so stuck up. I dont know how he has so much undeserved confidence. Literal definition of stuck up
He was great and did a wonderful job despite all this crazy semester. As for the people complaining about the brevity of his Piazza answers and him being "rude," it is because people ask questions to which they could easily find the answer in the syllabus or assignment instructions. So yes, professors become annoyed when students are lazy.
I went to him during his OFFICE HOURS to discuss some questions and he said he was not free. He was rude, and didnt look like he cared one bit.
Whenever someone asks a question on Piazza Nick will likely answer in a very vague and unhelpful way. Luckily the TA's are very helpful, if you want to learn anything just go see them instead.
Nick Hill is the definition of rude. He responds quickly to questions with short, insanely disrespectful, and extremely unhelpful "answers." 95% of the time his "answers" are either a derivative of "you are an idiot" or a command to read the material again. You will suffer.
Nick Hill is extremely rude on Piazza, and seems to enjoy belittling students for asking generally reasonable questions. This is not conducive towards building a better educational environment.
Nick Hill is an okay lecturer. He is demeaning and unhelpful on Piazza. I have not gone to his office hours due to my observations of him on Piazza, so I cannot speak to his ability to help in-person. Exams are hard but there is typically a large curve.
horrible professor. Does not help at all on the question forum piazza, always says he doesn't understand what you mean when you ask a logical question. He answers questions with a question, which does not really help people learn from mistakes. Bad learning environment taught where almost all teaching is on the question forum.
Nick is super approachable. I went to his office hours, and he was super helpful in learning the material for Chem 344. He is really passionate about organic chemistry, and he likes to go off on rants/tangents. His explanations are clear, and he will often extend his office hours to help students out.
Great class. After the first couple of weeks of lecture (which is given by Nick Hill) you go into lab which is run almost entirely by the TA's. The TA's are usually really great in my experience; they know what they're doing and are very helpful. Brian Esselman co-teaches the class, but he really just pays quick visits to the labs on occasion.
If you are having problems with your TA or the material in this class, do not hesitate to go and talk to him. He is extremely friendly and very helpful!
Nick Hill has one of the coolest accents, so he's super easy to listen to. I like him, and he explained the material easily. Unfortunately, he only teaches the first few days of 344, and the TA's pretty much take over from there. Bank on a good TA for a good grade...
Only taught the few lectures, but did a good job explaining the material. His accent is hot, and keeps you interested if you have the lectures early in the morning.
Fun to talk to and friendly. He only did a few lectures but they were very good. I went to his office a lot and he explained ochem better than my 345 lecturer. My TA was pretty bad but Nick got me through this course with an AB.
If you take O. Chem Lab with Nick as a coordinator, I would STRONGLY recommend to miss your one allowed lab and write a paper as your make-up. Nick gave me full points for a quickly written paper that translated to 100% for the missed lab (labs are nearly impossible to get full marks for...). Also, his British accent is SEXY.
Prof was great, TA was terrible. Way too much work for 2 credits, don't take with 345. Nick is a good guy and obviously loves teaching, go to office hours and he will explain everything.
I really don't know about this guy cuz he only gave us lectures for a week and disappeared. TAs took over after then until the end of the semester. And my TA was HORRIBLE. She was so unfair. So I had really big problems with my TA and had to ask the professor for help. And he didn't give a *hit about it. SO.. I hate this class, prof and TAs.
do not cheat in this dude's lab. he will catch you...
Nick was really helpful when I had a problem with my TA. He was fair, and he provided me with the help I needed. I wish he was my TA, because my TA was an incompetent fool. Sadly, Nick didn't teach my section. I would recommend him though. He's nice and kinda cute.
