Professor Enstad makes an already interesting course even better by incorporating current issues with the curriculum. Some of the projects are actually fun, and a refreshing break from long papers. Discussion is the most important part of the course and if you care about social justice and food systems, you'll do well and enjoy the course a lot.
The content of this class was interesting, don't get me wrong. Nan is not very understanding of students, and her feedback is vague and frustrating to incorporate. Often, if you want to do well, you have to resort to many of her own views. I asked for clarification on a feedback point and all hell broke loose. Just know what you are getting into.
Class has a lot of busywork and it's not very focused, but it's also not super hard and it is pretty interesting.
Nan is a nice person, but she is not the most accommodating or understanding of students when they need extensions. There is a lot of busy work and her lectures are unorganized.
Waaaaaaaaaay too much busywork. Like, A LOT of busywork. She is a really tough grader, especially for an elementary-level course. Do not take this class as an easy A.
Remember every horror story you ever heard about incompetent, out-of-touch academics who basically exploit the power of their position to harass and abuse students? They aren't just stories--Enstad is the proof. No room for intellectual exploration, only regurgitation of her half-baked political beliefs. Those who don't comply, pay the price. AWFUL
lectures weren't posted online so you need to be in lecture. lectures are unorganized. she's knowledgable about the material. readings were too long and there were too many for just a 3 credit class. papers were graded harshly and were hard because of such low word limits. Too much work for just a 3 credit elective class.
Nan took so much time to make the transition to online classes as easy as possible for students. She was extremely empathetic about our situations and definitely lightened the coursework while still providing a lot of great knowledge as it relates to the world we live in now. A very interesting and thought-provoking course
She makes soc222 a very interesting course, her lectures are pretty interesting. Very tough grader
Her lectures have absolutely no structure. She basically just talks at you for an hour and fifteen minutes about things that are not relevant or important.
Didn't discuss the Cold War or WW2 to better emphasize historical social movements and injustices. She started off the semester by claiming she wanted us to explore various political views while promising to stay in the middle throughout the semester- this lasted all of one week; too liberal to learn anything factual from her. DONT TAKE
Professor Enstad is a genuinely passionate about what she teaches, so that makes the class enjoyable, but her lectures are sometimes hard to follow. She doesn't use lecture slides, but that is because she encourages discussion. The test requires the usage of lecture notes, so it's a good idea to go. Overall, she made the course interesting.
curious if she has ever curved a course? I don't know anyone near an A with only the final left...
Her lectures are packed primarily with references to social movements and hardly talks about the fundamental aspects of US history. She is poor at analyzing US history in any meaningful, thought-provoking way and rather allows her liberal views cloud the factual bases of US history. She often skips/barely touches on important content. Terrible.
The class with her sucked. Probably spent 3 days on WWII and the Cold War. More time was spent on social injustices and movements. It wasn't hard to tell what her political views were. Tell you right now, very liberal. Expected the readings to be covered but would not lecture about them.
She doesn't understand the concept of general US history. I took a general US history class and she only focused in racism, movements, and social Injustice. She totally skipped major US history events like WWI, WWII, Cold War, etc. You can't just skip that stuff and only talk about social stuff. Absolutely terrible class and professor.
Nan is a solid professor that loves what she does. The lectures are interesting because Nan utilizes different media to engage the class. The only problem I had with this course is that it was very discussion-based and sometimes the facts Nan relied on for evidence seemed unreliable. Overall, thought-provoking course, but not too challenging.
I have never had such a horrible professor, I'm considering dropping my history major all together because of her class and I'm only 3 classes away from graduating. I've never had a professor be so straight up mean and not have a single constructive comment. I went to her office hours many times and all she does is rip on me. Worst prof I've had.
Nan left me feeling inspired after every lecture. She puts on an amazing performance, truly a professional in her field. This is a class I'll never forget with a professor who I'll recommend to everyone! No textbook, just novels and online articles. Take-home exams, and a couple fun projects that don't take that much time. Loved it!
She gave amazing lectures and was enjoyable to listen to. I loved her wit and use of TED talk videos.
Very good at challenging students intellectually who want to be challenged. Students who were willing to work and came prepared generally loved the class.
This is a seminar course and it is HORRIBLE. She is unclear, gives you unnecessary busy work, and cannot, ever ever admit she is wrong. She seems nice in class but one on one she's blunt and uncaring. She favors those she knows/are freakishly smart so if your an average student like me with a life outside of her class, don't even bother.
She was amazing! I took History of Women in the US since 1870 and I learned so much every single class. I took this with 2 of my other friends and we always talk about how we want to stand up and clap after her lectures. I've recommended this course to all of my friends!
Lectures are poorly structured and lecture material very loosely connects to reading material. Finally, her lectures are poor as she gets her main points out via student interaction, and since student responses vary its annoying to pick out whats important (very little I may add) from your peers. Not to difficult however in terms of grading.
Was fooled by the title of the class and then upon entering realized that this class was far too much history and background info then actual pop culture. Book selections were boring and one really did not have to read the material to write essays and take exams. Fairly subjective grader and if you participated you received slightly better grades.
Do not be fooled by the title of this class "Hist of Pop Culture in Multi Racial US." There is more emphasis on history than pop culture. Also, as others have posted, her lectures are unstructured and her grading is completely subjective and unfair! She was able to confuse a whole class with unclear explanations. I hope she sees this review.
Nan is the best professor I've had on this campus in 4 years. Her lectures helped me to challenge myself to think beyond what was simply being taught. She was extremely open to comments, expected respect and gave it in return and was more than helpful in office horus and via email.
Great lectures! They are always very interesting and easy to follow. The paper and midterms are not that difficult easy A if you put the effort in
Cultural Studies/ Cultural History. An interesting title for the course, but boring. Nan's objective is not clear and the class lacks structure. Her grading system is highly subjective (to how well she knows you!) Readings lack "diversity" and discussions are narrow in scope. If grades are appropriate then I'd give her a BC.
I agree with the others: lecture was BORING. However, she did put outlines on an overhead so that lectures were at least structured. Class is not wildly difficult. I cut a lot of corners with the readings, and still got an "A."
great class with a great topic but the grading is really hard and it is unclear what she wants from you. dont expect and A unless you work REALLY hard
i liked her, she seemed nice and was friendly whenever i saw her on the street. not an easy class however to do well in with little work.
She just sits through lecture and talks, with no realy structured notes. It is hard to know what she is looking for. Lecture is boring boring boring. The reading is also boring and long and hard. I learned some interesting things but overall it sucks.
Watch out everyone, this class is going to a 400 level next and it's awful... I didn't learn a thing and the grading is horrendous!! Don't be fooled that it's about pop culture. Stay away
