Started my freshman year in this class - I highly recommend it. My major is unrelated to sociology, but his lectures were fascinating and completely digestible for a new undergrad. The content is a nice break from STEM courses, and there is very little homework outside of class. All tested materials are explained accurately beforehand. Great Prof!
What a G 5/5
Prof. Pedriana is super passionate and funny. I always enjoyed going to his lectures because he is so animated, even though they can be slow at times. Discussion attendance is mandatory though lecture isn't, it can be helpful for exams to go. One critique: sometimes the wording of his exam questions wasn't super clear, which is annoying.
One of the most enjoyable lecturers at UW. Weekly readings. If you show up to lecture and pay attention, you shouldn't have to worry about exams.
He is genuinely so pure and funny. He knows most of us are there cause we have to be, and so he makes class very simple and straightforward, will literally say in lecture "this is gonna be on a test question." One of the few professors I've seen consistently make a whole class laugh. He truly made this class enjoyable, even for a stem person ;)
He is quite nice and would like to provide helps for students to succeed in exams. His powerpoints are clear and logical, accessible online and easy for review.
I like Professor Pedriana's way he runs his class. Loved his passion during the lecture and it would make the class fly by. Really not too difficult of a course either, would highly recommend both this professor and this course to anyone no matter what grade. Big fan!
I didn't know how awesome Professor Pedriana's lectures are until we had to switch to different lecturers! Super interesting course - I had a lot of fun.
Pedriana is a great lecturer and most of the class is based around info he says in lecture, so definitely go. He is very passionate about the things he teaches, which makes the class more interesting. Lots of textbook reading but not all of it is necessary. Tests are multiple choice but refer to specific people and ideas presented in readings.
He is genuinely passionate about his content which makes lectures more interesting, however most of the material in lectures is read directly off of a powerpoint that is also posted to canvas. I paid attention to maybe 1/3 of the lecture but reviewing the slides had me set for the tests.
I didn't like the content of the soc 134 class much but I liked the professor enough. If he taught a more interesting subject I imagine I would give him an even better rating.
Professor Pedriana is by far the best professor I've encountered so far at UW-Madison. His lectures are fascinating and he presents the course material in a way that's easy to understand. There's literally nothing I would change about this class if I were to take it again, it was awesome.
Favorite professor I've ever had and the content is incredibly interesting. He is truly a great teacher.
Pedriana seems like a really nice guy and is very passionate about what he's teaching. Lectures can be long but the class is pretty easy if you pay attention. Homework grades are easy A's and exams are fair. Discussion was always amazing!
The lectures are a little long, but the content is all super interesting. Will always let us go early when he's done with his slides. Tests were challenging but pretty fair. The discussion grade is an easy A and you get unlimited attempts on the quizzes so there's no reason you shouldn't end the class with an A.
Professor Pedriana did not disappoint after reading his other reviews. He is a funny and nice guy who is obviously very passionate about what he teaches. I would highly recommend.
Pedriana was clear and easy to understand during his lectures and the tests were rather easy. He never included anything that wasn't covered in lecture or in the readings on the tests. He also adjusted the weight of tests when there were many students who performed poorly. Discussion attendance is mandatory.
On the surface this class seemed to be pretty easy. I had the professor before and loved his other class (SOC134 which was amazing!) This class ended up being somewhat miserable. Make sure you get a GOOD TA because without one the class isn't great. Also, NO RUBRICS!!! It's hard to write the final paper without knowing what is expected. Good luck:/
Professor Pedriana is a fantastic professor. I highly recommend any class he teaches. Although we are graded on attendance for lectures, he is very lenient and accommodating. Also, lectures are always interesting and it is truly the one class I have this semester that I look forward to going to. Super fair grading and will explain anything to you.
I personally thought that this class and its content was extremely easy, but the tests were worded really poorly and the questions could be misleading. This class has 3 tests that make up 67.5% of your grade, so you if you do poorly on multiple choice exams this may not be the best. The material was interesting and he seemed like a nice guy.
I really have enjoyed Professor Pedriana, he really explains everything that is necessary and the class is straightforward. Discussions are incredibly easy (and necessary to earn a good grade). His lectures are repetitive because it overlaps with textbook. All in all, he is really nice and wants everyone to succeed.
Professor Pedriana is amazing. Great lecturer, understands that students are people and not just a slave to give hw or bad advice to. I highly recommend him if you are looking for a class that relates to our society in a fun and interesting way !
Prof. Pedriana is a great professor. This class is super interesting, engaging, and also quite easy. He's very passionate about what he's teaching and it makes a huge difference. He's also just a really nice person, I was able to make up the first midterm even though I missed it due to being sick. Highly recommend this class to anyone.
I could not speak more highly of Prof Pedriana or Soc 134, absolutely my favorite class I've ever taken. Lectures were engaging and easy to follow. He even told TAs to be more lenient with grading because he understood how tough this year was, super caring and relatable guy. I have friends that became sociology majors because of him and this class.
Pedriana is a great professor, probably one of the best ones out there actually. However, this course requires a lot of time and attention. His lectures are pretty heavy and have lots of information so if you don't take notes or attend to discussions, you won't pass. Unfortunately exams are not organized well and you don't get any feedback.
The class wasn't super difficult, and I thought it was really interesting. Pedriana's lectures were very helpful, and the exams covered most of the things in lecture. There was a lot of supplemental reading and reading from the textbook, but you just had to skim it. Tests were open book/note, somewhat challenging. Overall Easy A.
Professor Pedriana is a great professor and he is very accommodating. Tests are worth 65% of the class so study for those. Lots of readings, but not the worst. The class is super interesting. It should be easy to get an A or AB in the class.
He's really nice guy who knows a lot about these concepts. The class isn't too difficult; readings are interesting but can be a little long, lectures are straight to the point, and discussions are a good recap of the info presented that week. 10/10 would take again.
He's bar none the best professor I have had at UW. Incredibly personable and very clear on what is going to be on exams. His lectures are straight forward and the readings are never too long. Great pic to fill your ethnic studies requirement.
Just an overall great guy with great knowledge of the subject
Pedriana makes lectures enjoyable just because of who he is. You want to go to class just to experience him. Also, he is super sweet and caring.
He is very good at giving lectures and engaging with the material not just reading off slides. He is also good at making connections between almost everything we have talked about in class. As well, the discussions are very interesting and a good way to see how others perceive race and ethnicity in America.
This was 1 of my favorite classes!! I took this class online, so I didn't interact with Pedriana much in person. Nonetheless, his lectures are specific and very informative, but to get the best grade you have to also read the textbook and articles. Either way, it's easy to get an A and understand the concepts. Difficulty depends mostly on the TA.
I loved professor pedrina. The class was interesting and he was a very genuine person who made you feel like you could come talk to him about any concerns with the class. It wasn't that difficult of a class and the lectures were very useful for the exams. You have to do the readings but they were not very long.
I loved Professor Pedriana and Soc 134 in general. The tests were pretty challenging but overall a good measurement of our knowledge. The material is super interesting and he does a good job of keeping students engaged and interested in lecture. Loads of textbook and article reading got boring quickly, though.
Professor Pedriana is a good teacher however his exams are poorly written and have bad structure. He has you write 2-3 essays for his exams w/ multiple choice and they don't make a lot of sense. Essays are not graded well with no feedback to improve. Also, discussion meetings are mandatory and are pretty irrelevant.
Class format is very easy to follow and is consistent every week. The only hard thing about this class were the exams, which were sometimes written poorly, but they were open note and if you prepare a little you will be fine. Essays on exams were not clearly graded and received no feedback. Easy and mostly laid back class.
Professor Pedriana is upfront about grading and receptive to student concerns. He leads interesting lectures that tie in well with TA discussion sections. If you take one of his classes, make sure to do all the readings.
Dr. Pedriana is very sweet, but not my favorite professor. Most of our grade was essays (which we received no feedback on despite getting randomly docked points) and multiple choice exams (which were written very confusingly and I didn't feel tested my knowledge). He graded fairly and curved, but overall I don't feel like I learned much.
Pedriana is a nice professor who is passionate about his subject. You'll really enjoy being in his lectures, which were often interactive. Exams were open-note and fairly easy with the exception of badly written questions that are curved away. Online, Pedriana really struggles with communication, so be prepared to email him directly with questions.
Professor Pedriana is incredible. SOC 134 definitely has some sensitive content, but he and the TAs handle it with delicacy. Definitely do the practice textbook questions he posts because they're almost verbatim on the midterm and final. I never felt stupid when I asked clarifying questions.
One of my favorite professors in one of my favorite classes. Definitely a great class to fulfill your ethnic studies requirement. Can definitely be reading-intensive and material-heavy at times, but the content is incredibly interesting. I would recommend this class to anyone.
Very interesting material! Lots of reading, but overall the class is not challenging. Prof Pedriana clearly cares about his students and made changes to the course throughout the semester (extensions, extra credit, etc.) to help out!
Really interesting course and a nice, sympathetic professor. Tests aren't super easy but definitely manageable if you put in the time to study and do the readings.
Great professor, easy class. Engaging lectures.
Professor Pedriana is very caring and approaches sociology with an inclusive perspective. Weekly assignments included 2 hour long lectures, 1-2 supplemental reading pdfs, about 20-30 pages of textbook readings, and a quiz. Quizzes were very easy and the class itself is an easy A if you do your work and keep up with the readings.
Dr. Pedriana is one of the best professors I've had yet! His lectures are very clear and his exams are a fair reflection of the coursework. The assigned readings are always under 10 pages and very engaging. He is very clear with communication on assignments, and understanding when mistakes happen. Great ethnic studies course
Lecture content is SUPER interesting/informative and pretty straight-forward. Lecture notes are taken from a PowerPoint. Be sure to do the assigned readings since some MC questions on exams are tricky without them. Beware, Pedriana occasionally contradicts himself, so be prepared to make note adjustments. Overall, a nice easy A for ethnic studies.
Pedriana is a great lecturer and keeps things interesting and fun. However, your grade is very dependent on the difficulty of your TA. Overall, the work isn't bad: there's three 2-3 page essays, weekly reading reactions, a research paper, and two exams. The exams pull questions straight from the lectures (and occasionally a reading or two). Easy A.
It is a CommB class so the amount of writing is fair, but it is a lot. In terms of Pedriana, he is a great professor and makes a somewhat boring topic pretty interesting. A lot of your grade really depends on your TA but as a professor I recommend him. Also, he was easily the most accommodating prof I had for school being online.
Pedriana did a great job making the content super interesting. There is a lot of work and reading, but it is a Comm B class. There were 4 short assignments, weekly reading summaries, and one large research paper. Overall, the class is easy to get an A in. I would definitely recommend if you need a comm B or a soc class credit!
He is an awesome lecturer! I really enjoyed taking his class. You just have to show up to class and do a few readings a week, and you will be just fine.
Nick is an awesome guy! Unfortunately the content of the class is pretty dry but he does his best to make it interesting. A few short readings per week and if you read them and write down the things on the board during lecture the exams are very straightforward.
Lectures are fairly straightforward. The only homework was a few short readings each week. You get an attendance grade and your highest exam score is weighted more heavily than your lowest so it lifts your grade. Easy A
Professor Pedriana is cool, but his lectures can get a little boring. Attendance in lectures is graded, but he mostly just reads from his slides which is pretty annoying. He's sometimes funny and the classwork is easy. No papers or textbooks, just online reading.
