This professor gets a really bad rap but is a fantastic professor. All assignments have very clear expectations. Grading is fair, you just have to follow the directions. It is not a hard class, it is a lot of work but well worth it if you don't mind completing the tasks exactly as they are written.

225 was a great online class. It was easy and Professor Gernsbacher was approachable. I will say there is a lot of writing, so you're doing work pretty much every day. It's worth it to take it online!

The homework was tedious, and TAs took off points for little things. However, the class is not difficult, just a lot of work. You will also have to meet with classmates online once per week, which can be VERY annoying. The articles were enjoyable, but the overall content needs an update. She had Tumblr as an option for our finals lol.

I wouldn't consider this class tough at all. If you read the directions/syllabus/course requirements, everything you need to succeed is clearly outlined. And Gernsbacher is easy to reach; she responds to emails very quickly. Idk. The class is manageable. Just read the directions.

Said we could work ahead, opened course during winter break, that was the accommodation. Was employed throughout break meaning I couldn't do class. Should we be expected to work during the month we get to breathe? her reason is "if u know ur going to miss things work ahead" ma'am i'm disabled, I can't predict that that's why i have accommodations.

No psychology is taught in this course. The entire course is the professor trying to convince us her class is better because it's fully online. Condescending TA's who poorly grade assignments, pointless 20-part assignments, overall this class is a huge waste of time and energy.

I still do not understand why this is a 500 level course. there is no reason a 500 level course should be teaching me why media literacy is important, that is a 100/200 level topic. There is also no reason an assignment should have 22 parts to it. if you can't get your point across in a couple of articles, then you've chosen the wrong articles.

Do not take this class. If you are looking for an easier, online psychology course, look ANYWHERE else. Grading is an absolute nightmare with random points being taken off for the dumbest reasons. No psychology has been taught in this course, it seems like she is just trying to show us why her course is better because it's online.

Prof. Gernsbacher gets a bad reputation, but seriously the instructions are clear and pretty easy to meet. She has a flexible built in extension of 1 week, and you can receive full credit. TAs can be tedious graders, but if you email Prof. Gernsbacher she can double check work and correct the grading mistakes of her TAs.

Awful. 84 assignments for 8 weeks. Directions are nitpicky but there's no rubrics to know how it's graded & the professor & TAs don't tell you what's wrong. Work is worth 3 points & sometimes an assignment is just a discussion post and other times it's 2 essays. If I didn't need to take this to graduate I never would have taken this class with her.

Even though there are many assignments, they are easy and could get full points if you follow the steps. It did not have exams, and only needed to read materials. The requirements may be strict for many people, but I think it would be okay if you got familiar with those rules. The Percentage of getting an A is high and it is worth four credits!

Ridiculously pedantic grading, got a 0 on an assignment for forgetting to put my name at the top of the page. Condescending when approached with questions. Wants students to succeed but is too married to her terrible pedagogy to adapt in any way to student needs. Class (psych 532) wants to explain to Gen Z students *what the internet is*.

Definitely take this over the in-person semester options for this course. The work is a little tedious, but she gives specific instructions on what to submit, and if you follow that it is actually really easy.

I'm being very serious when I say this, absolutely never ever take this class. It's infuriating and you will contemplate your life when completing her awful assignments. 84 assignments and a massive term project. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! If you don't want to spend at least two a hours a day working on assignments, get points off for the SMALLEST errors, receive the most condescending emails, and want to lose your mind then absolutely don't take this class. Id much rather take exams than take this class! Never ever again.

I never leave ratings on this site but she is degrading, rude, stuck up, belittling, unhelpful, and doesn't listen to feedback. Puts on a weak "caring" facade. Takes off points for the SMALLEST most unimaginable things. Material is irrelevant and outdated. Thinks she is better than everyone, acts like she has never made a mistake in her life.

The tasks can be frustrating at times, but she puts a lot of work into her courses and I can tell that she genuinely cares about her students and the material

Class was advertised as asynchronous but prof managed to enforce mandatory synchronous group meetings with classmates. if group-members couldn't meet because of their busy schedules that was somehow a course-conduct violation. If you have a question or mess up, she will tell you to re-read the syllabus. Get hyped if you like busywork.

This was easily the worst class that I have taken in my 4 years at UW. The professor provides no feedback on how to correct assignments that took hours to complete. Professor claims the structure of the class was designed to be flexible but the amount of busy work was ridiculous. This class needs to be changed or hire a better professor.

Gernsbacher is a horrible professor. UW psych department should remove her. She is condescending and nit picky to the point of insanity. You will learn nothing of value, as all she assigns is busywork made for middle schoolers. She preaches being internet savvy, yet the class hasn't been updated in 8 years. Can't believe I paid for this class.

she sux

Morton is indescribably HORRIBLE and RUDE. Summer course 225 is relentless, requiring DAILY work, including Sunday. Beware of formatting errors; they result in point deductions. TAs are WORTHLESS, possibly just following Morton's lead. DON'T expect helpful advice from them. Prepare for a gruelling workload if you take this class in the summer!

The internet changes EVERY DAY and yet nearly everything we read was from at least 10 years ago. The curriculum clearly has barely been updated in the entire time this class has existed. Downright irresponsible. Gernsbacher is condescending and picky about the tiniest things. + Ungodly amount of busy work. Not a hard class, but it is insufferable.

None of the class content has been updated since 2018. The professor is very nitpicking on following instructions to assignments. If you email the professor to ask why you got points off, she will send you an essay about why you're wrong. I thought she was nice at first but then I realized that she was just condescending. Stay away!!!

Psych532 was advertised as online asynchronous and the prof urges you to work ahead but there are weekly synchronous assignments that prevent working ahead. If you don't follow every single instruction to the very letter you lose points. I got an A but if I knew this class would be so petty about every single assignment I would've never enrolled

This was by far the worst class I have ever taken. I'm not confident this class has been updated in 10 years. The class is taught as if no one in the class has ever heard of the internet before, the material is extremely outdated. All assignments can be described as busy work. I have learned nothing taking this class. Stay away from PSYCH 532!!!

Gernsbacher was by FAR the most disrespectful, condescending professor I have ever had. She was patronizing and spoke to students as if they were the dumbest creatures to walk the face of the earth. Incredibly narcissistic. Her course is all online and she seems to pride herself on being computer and internet savvy. She is not.

I started the course with a negative impression on the professor. But I want to be fair and say that 225 is not as miserable as one may think. the grading system keeps you accountable until the end of the course and allows you to make small mistakes along the way. The professor is very accessible through email, though not always very helpful.

The class is simple if you follow the directions to a T and keep up with due dates. The real problem is that the lessons treat students like kindergarteners. The way you're forced to write essays is what you learn in middle school. The format kills any creativity you may have. It feels like busy work and everything that's taught you learn in 101.

I really liked Gernsbacher's PSY532 class because it was really engaging. I took both her classes this summer and enjoyed this a lot. There were so many new ways I looked at the Internet.

Like other people, I can understand why people don't enjoy the class structure. It's a lot, but to me I enjoyed being engaged and I actually learned in her class. If you don't want to do daily homework, then you can totally do another class. Personally, I really liked Gersnbacher.

350 characters is not enough to describe how truly horrible Morton is. She is by far and away the worst prof I've had at UW and the psychology department should be embarrassed that she is still on the teaching staff. Gives assignments where the instructions are literally to copy and paste form one doc to another. Extremely condescending. THE WORST

I think this site needs to provide a new rating scale: 0-5. Even then this professor wouldn't be on that scale. She is absolute garbage. All assignments are arbitrary. She is one of the most condescending people I have ever met. Do not take any of her classes. Ever. Spare yourself from this menace.

Tons of homework, reading, and writing. A very unsatisfactory professor, the worst of all my professors. No any lectures, so you need to completely study by yourself. Grading requirements are very weird, unfriendly, and impatient, and never care if she is wrong. Anyway, I don't want to see any more lectures from this professor. It's really lame!

In this class, the grade you earn reflects the amount of work you put in. If you pay attention to direction and are good with tedious details, you will thrive in this class. The material is not very hard and what's looked for is clearly laid out, but there are a lot of small details. She responds to emails very quickly.

This is the worst class I have taken at UW. The class work is extremely tedious and mind-numbing. Gernsbacher is so condescending and spends half the class stressing how great she is. The information is also super outdated and no longer relevant. She bases many lessons off cherry-picked studies with flimsy evidence. This class is exhausting

The class itself was easy, but content is not always interesting and articles & lectures are SUPER outdated, which frankly feels lazy for someone who boasts about their talents of teaching online. Professor Gernsbacher is also super condescending. You have to play games & keep track of every little thing--it's exhausting and not good for learning.

6 assignments per week, but can be completed easily by skimming readings. Online meetings with group required every week. Somewhat interesting content, but spends the whole class justifying why she is teaching online. 7 year old lecture vids which is inexcusable for a class on the Internet. Also the most condescending person I have ever met.

I chose to take this course over the summer as I expected it to be an easy course with little work, however this is not the case at all. The class contains easy content, but the work load is almost unbearable and I don't think I really even learned anything valuable. Also, the grading is terrible as there is no feedback provided.

Dr. Gernsbacher leads a great class, but I can see why some students are a bit upset with her. The class is fairly straightforward and you work basically at your own pace. The assignments are easy and there are a lot of them. Just make sure to follow directions 100% and you should easily receive an "A" if not an "A+". Overall a wonderful professor!

Lecture content is recorded from 1999. She takes points off for the silliest things.

Professor does not interact with the class and teaches like a high school teacher--these are good or bad. Her directions are actually pretty clear but you have to follow the wording exactly. Also, copy and paste file names. Positives: not a lot of thinking, can work ahead, no tests Negatives: group work, many tedious assignments, a bit mindless

this class is horrible. so many small assignments and I feel like I'm not learning anything at all. she treats students like they children. so stupid. worthless class don't take it. UW should be embarrassed by her teaching.

This class was a joke, so many assignments and busy work for no reason at all. She tries way too hard to make class difficult. Points are taken off for such small mistakes. I got points off for naming a pdf file the wrong thing. They also never tell you why you got points off, they make you guess when fixing the assignment. class was boring overall

The assignments are not hard but tedious. It takes a long time to do, but there's no reason for it. I only learned a couple things that were actually helpful. She and her TAs give VERY poor feedback! It's all copy and pasted. You automaticaly get a 1/3 if you misinterpret or miss a tiny thing. Shes condescending-would not recommend her as a prof.

She is the worst professor I've ever had. Takes points off for things like misnaming a document. When you get points off, they don't tell you what was wrong so you have to guess and try again. Gives 3 times more work than is necessary. Is trying her hardest to make Research Methods a tough class. Teaches 5 paragraph essay like we're in 4th grade.

University of Wisconsin should be embarrassed to have a teacher as unaware as professor Gernsbacher. Her teaching is elementary and her grading not relevant to the understanding of the material.

She marks off points with no remorse, assigns tedious amounts of work, and is not clear when you do an assignment wrong. I forgot one tiny detail in an assignment that was otherwise perfect and instantly received a 1/3 because the "initial assignment was not correct", best score I can receive now is a 2/3. Everything is weighted heavy too. bad.

I would never take this course again. She tries to increase the difficulty of the classwhich is totally fine but does it by not giving full instruction and taking off points where instruction isnt given rather than making questions asked more application based. Shes hypocritical in teaching critical thinking and requiring specific formats.

Never thought I'd write a review on here, but HORRIBLE!! Teaches elementary and non-academic techniques hat should be taken as basic guidelines such as five paragraph format taught to middle schoolers, yet takes point off for things based on her extremely nuanced formatting rather than for things that show an understanding of the subject material.

It is really hard at beginning, students need to follow the instructions carefully and find out where they made mistakes by themselves. You need to spend 4 hours or above 6 days in a week, not a easy course. But when you get familiar with the process, It became easier and you can learn useful skills through the assignments.

Overall, the assigments are fairly simple, however she and her TAs give poor feedback that do not allow for adequate corrections to be made on assignments. She also is ridiculously passive aggressive in her responses which borderline disrespectful, such as assuming you did not put enough effort into assignments.

I feel like Gernsbacher is getting a bad rep for no reason. This class is one of my favorites I have taken so far. Six assignments due a week but they are relatively easy and simple to do. To pass this class is FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. It is hard to get anything lower than a B if you can follow directions and do the HW. Allows you to earn credit back.

horrible feedback since it is all copied and pasted. Even her 'personalized' emails are just one comment written into a template she copes and pastes...

I dislike professor Gernsbacher due to her insensitive and irony during the COVID19 crisis. She is petty enough to take off points for misnaming documents, late assignments, and other minor shortcomings on assignments that were about the digital divide... and how corona enlightened society on the impact on education... seems ironic and insensitive

Although the class is already online, this teacher had not on message or consideration for the health and well-being of students during COVID0-19. Only felt the need to say something since she clearly cares about file name more than her students wellbeing during a world crisis.... so if that tells you anything DONT TAKE THIS CLASS

STAY AWAY!!! No even a word feedback for why u got ur points off. Endless bureaucratese when you ask questions or try to talk. 2. Extremely condescending, no space to talk and quote her so-called contract again and again. 3. Morbid perfectionist, lost of a space in title will cause 1/3 points off. 4. Lots of useless reading for 6 days a week.

horrible at providing any feedback that isn't condescending

this professor is a bit condescending when she contacts you. Also the whole teaching team does not provide any helpful feedback, it's all quoting from the syllabus

this class is not hard but the professor does not give helpful feedback. She expects you to follow tiny details and will take points if you don't follow them all. Even while doing so, if you ask her a question she just copy and pastes the syllabus. Not good teaching at all.

Worst class I've ever taken, she makes sure you work on this class 4 hours a day, 6 days a week without break. She doesn't accept extenuating circumstances (like car crashes). Class is about following instructions instead of learning you'll get a bad grade if you miss the tiniest detail. When you ask a question she just quotes the syllabus at you.

Psychological effects of the internet was an awesome depth course and Prof. Gernsbacher is definitely one of the reasons why. She structures the course very well and as long as you keep up with the material, you should have no problem. Have to interact with the class daily but its not difficult work. Would recommend!

Professor Gernsbacher is a fair teacher. She does note that she cares for the students and is generally concerned for them. A couple of times I stated concerns about an assignment, she just resent the instructions on the assignment. I would have found it more helpful if she told me directly. In addition, forget a sentence, you will get downgraded.

I took psych 225 (Research Methods) online during the summer of 2017 and it was probably the worst experience of my life. This class was RIDICULOUSLY meticulous to the point where you'd get an entire assignment wrong because you forgot to number a paragraph. There is SO much work that staying ahead isn't an option. Would NOT recommend.

I took Professor Gernsbacher's Research Methods class online this summer and I LOVED it. There was a lot of work, and double the work with it being a summer class! There are 2 assignments due 6 days a week (lots of work)! But if you put in the effort and follow the very clear instructions, it is easy to get an A! Would definitely take again!

Worst class I ever took. The grading is absolutely ridiculous. Quality over quantity does NOT apply here. Quality can go right out the window! The class is more about following meticulous guidelines than actual thinking and writing. Not to mention if you bring a complaint to her, she will brush it right under the rug. So glad this class is done.

My first time taking a fully online course. The expectations were fully laid out and clear. There is homework due 5 days a week. Expect to spend 60-90 min on the homework per day. You definitely learn a lot in this class for academic and life purposes. Material was very interesting & organized. No textbooks or exams. 1 term project due at the end.

I am incredibly interested in the topic of this class. However it was a terrible experience. She really screws you over. All assignments are responses online and she pulls grades out of nowhere. I honestly did every assignment well, and yet I will not receive anywhere close to the grade I deserve. She is also very full of herself and outdated info

Absolutely terrible experience with Gernsbacher leading an online course. She does not clearly define what you have to do to get a good grade. She is completely full of herself and thinks she's better than everyone. Most assignments are just posting reflections, yet she still tells you your reflections are poor.

Really really really nice lady. Class is the best class I've ever taken but it definitely takes a lot of time. Don't take it if you think it's just an easy online class cause you definitely have to work for it. She did an awesome job making an online class very interactive (like using chat rooms). Always available for questions. Great class.
