She is very nice and respectful of her students. There was a lot of readings to do outside of class. She counts 95% as her 100%. She only gives 100% if you go above and beyond.

I love Monica. Took a couple linguistics classes with her and found her very engaging, accessible, and genuinely invested in our education. You have to keep up but if you do, you will get a lot out of her classes.

She's a weird one. I tried to stay on her good side but I couldn't find any. I asked her for a letter of recommendation but she declined citing a silly incident that I myself forgot. All my questions seem to bother her so much so that I just stopped asking. Seems only friendly to students who work with her on some research projects or something.

Awful personality! Whenever I meet her outside the classroom she seems irritated at my sight as if she is too busy to even smile! She also uses every possible chance to chuck her personal feminist ideas down everyone's throat! There were incidents where she clearly didn't like a certain student for some vague reason... Avoid her at all costs!

An excellent, enlightening, and very interesting class. Dr. Macaulay is very wise and an expert in her field. I knew nearly nothing about linguistics/endangered languages going in, and I'm glad I discovered such an interesting field. I feel I know more about the world after taking this class.

Monica is simply the best. Class was interesting, well paced, varied, and well thought out. She's a fair grader and brings all concerns forward before the grade it posted. There isn't too much work outside of class, and lectures provide a ton of information you won't get other places. She truly is an expert and is well respected

This class was full of interesting content. The professor was a little forgetful at times, but overall a very nice person who was clearly very passionate about the subjects. I would recommend this class to fulfill the ethnic studies requirement or just for fun!

Loved this class and prof. MacAuley. Took this class for an ethnic studies requirement but wound up enjoying it more than most of my other classes!

Great class and super easy Ethnic Studies fulfillment. You don't have to do the readings if you don't want to (even though she might say otherwise). Interesting lectures. Monica is such an incredibly nice and understanding person - couldn't recommend her class more!

She is one of the best professors I have ever had. I am a very lazy student and this class was one of the easiest yet insightful and best classes ever. Highly Recommend

The professor is probably one of my all-time favorites, she makes concepts clear and easy to understand. Class and its topics are very interesting, especially for a student who's never taken a linguistics class and took this course only for ethnic studies requirement. Highly recommend it!

The professor is good at in explaining concepts but what was taught turned out to be not so helpful for graduate students.

I like most people found this class to be very easy. Her exams are just like homework. It may be challenging if you are not a native speaker of English due to the nature of the topics - syntax, semantics, phonetics etc. I enjoyed this class and found the topics interesting. Professor Macauly is a nice professor. I would recommend the course.

This is an extremely easy class, but also extremely pointless. None of the information is useful, so she does try to make it a little interesting but it is hopeless. You print out the notes for class so there is little effort involved. Just memorize and know the general concepts for the test and it is a breeze.

Great professor who cares about her students, very helpful, generous grader. Really makes you think and points out the material that is difficult to grasp at first.

Really good professor. It's kind of an interesting class and she posts handouts on the website before lectures, which makes note-taking a lot easier. She is kind of absent-minded, though, especially with the electronics in the lecture hall. But overall, straightforward class and with a litte bit of effort, you should do well.

great humanities credits. she's a little scatter-brained, but always good for a laugh. the topic is really interesting, and she loves what she's teaching. you never use the book and tests are outlined on review sheets that you get during discussion. if you study and give even a little effort, you should do well.

There are better ways to get humanities credits, it was a waste of time.

This professor does make the occasional mistake, but she knows her stuff and wants everyone to do well. This is a VERY EASY A if you go to lecture and do homework, even though lecture is extremely boring at times. I studied for less than 2 hours total for the final and aced it.

she is a good teacher - makes some mistakes in class - but overall it is really easy. if you spend a total of three hours studying for the final, you'll get an A. An easy going class if you need the req.

Totally incompetent. Will spend 10 minutes giving an example, only to realize she did the whole thing wrong and have to go back and re-do it. Totally useless topic and I can't believe people actually devote their lives to studying it.

This class is SUPER easy untill after the second mid-term. this class can be a VERY easy A if you don't blow off the lectures. Just go and take the notes cuz the test material is right off of lecture notes. The last exam gets really confusing tho - so pay attention when she starts talking about word trees...

she puts up with loud people in a huge lecture hall, so she gets props for that. the subject can only be so much fun to talk about for an hour and she does an ok job keeping it interesting. however, the class is really easy, and she makes it seem hard or like we're all stupid. easy class

She puts handouts on learn@uw before each lecture that are very helpful. Her tests are also not too bad if you study a little!

Linguistics is about language in general, but i think i learned more about mixtec than anything else. If you don't mind that, you'll like the class. Nice woman, easy class, lecture notes online.

Pretty easy class, easy homework, and easy exams. Nice woman, but she is technologically challenged. Funny somtimes, but it got annoying.

As others have said, she's easy and nice. Pretty much takes the notes for you; minimal textbook use. Harder to talk to in office hours than I had imagined, though.

She reminds me of one of those very sweet 1st grade teachers. She always gave us review sheets and there were never surprises on the exam. If you study the review sheet, you will do very well in the class. She was very enthusiastic and seemed like an overall nice woman. If you don't like humanities classes, ling 101/301 is the way to go.

She's pretty clear about the stuff she talks about and the exams are pretty easy if you study.
