Professor Grant is super knowledgeable and passionate about sociological research. The class during discussion sections is really interesting and engaging but I struggled a lot during lectures to stay engaged. Attendance is mandatory and items in lecture are included in the quizzes, also reviewing slides wasn't super helpful for me.
Very hard to hear her in lecture, you can do fine without going. Class is easy if you took AP Human Geography in high school, but in general not challenging. Midterms in person, final exam was online. The in-person tests questions were sometimes hard to understand, but it's all multiple choice. Discussions seemed pointless to me. Some short papers.
Prof Grant explains stuff well, but the class content is dry. I hardly did any of the readings. Lectures were hard to understand in Mosse 2340. Discussions and reviewing critical material from slides and reading quizzes are essential to doing well on exams. Participate and complete at least the vocab portion of discussion material.
Prof Grant was a decent lecturer and she was very fair. She gave an extra credit opportunity and added drops to our quizzes. I had the stomach flu during the midterm time and she was very considerate of that which I really appreciate. There were a lot of readings but I ended up not doing most of them. Participation is heavy so attend disc and talk.
She breathes really heavily which can be annoying when she uses a microphone, but her voice is much clearer in the recorded lectures. After the first 2 weeks I stopped going to lecture and watched the live stream instead. Only thing that was mandatory was discussion attendance. Colin, our TA was great. You're the best Colin!
Lectures are made very complicated, number- and graph-heavy, and include a significant amount of information that will not be tested in the way it is explained. I found it easier to look through her lecture slides on my own time and internalize the information individually instead of trying to understand them the way Dr. Grant explains.
Professor Grant is obviously passionate about the various topics covered; however, the lectures are monotonous and not engaging. It is important to show up to lectures to get a basic understanding of the concepts, as the exams are very representative of what is covered during lectures. This class should not be an issue if you show up and engage.
Prof. Grants lectures are horrible, not content wise but it is extremely hard to hear her through her mask/breathing. The lectures were boring but you can livestream them at home. The readings of this class were extremely interesting and have challenged my thinking. If you do the readings, it will be the easiest A.
Soc 170 is already a painfully boring class, and Dr. Grant does not make it any better. Lectures are extremely stale, and you can never hear what she's saying. On the bright side, she livestreams every lecture so you don't have to be stuck in the 500 person lecture. The exams also have questions that are far more difficult than the quizzes.
As much as I want to like her, I can't. She is a very, very stale lecturer, and she constantly exhales into her mic. Her exams are extremely unfair, with questions far more difficult than those on quizzes and practice tests, and MUCH less time to complete. I do all my work and attend all the lectures, but she makes it difficult to truly do well.
Took Soc 170 overall the class was fine and the topics were all interesting. Lectures were a little boring, but overall bearable and very straightforward information. The tests were easy if you watch all the lectures and take good notes. Not a ton of homework so the tests and essays matter (but aren't super hard).
Very boring Lecturer. Stay away!!!
Dr. Grant is a poor lecturer. She breathes into her mic making it very hard to understand her. She knows what she's talking about, though. It was easier to listen to her recorded lectures rather than her speak in person. The class itself was very boring in my opinion, so if your taking it for specific credit, I would recommend taking another class.
When studying for the midterm and final, use the lecture slides. If she gives you access to lecture recordings, rewatch those to study. Exams are based off of lectures. Go to lectures and pay attention. Readings and videos help, but the lectures are most important.
Monica's lectures were often very boring and we could not hear her most of the time because lecture was in a big lecture hall and she had to use a microphone. She basically goes over everything that was on the readings, so going to class doesn't always seem necessary. As long as you put in some effort you will do just fine in this class.
While the material in Professor Grant's classes is often interesting and she is very kind, the lectures can be very dull and heavy. The readings are not required, and as long as you know what is going on in the course, you will be fine. There is also close to no outside work for this class. Overall very easy, but the lectures are very dull.
Final was impossible. Way too specific.
Exams were hard and really specific. Would ask questions from articles without any context.
The exams, especially the final, are extremely specific even if open-note. You will not be able to find everything in your notes in the amount of time, especially since all of the questions are weirdly written. The final was the worst test I have taken. Professor Grant also is basically impossible to hear during lectures, even if you watch online.
Boring class, boring lectures. Professor Grant is super kind but insanely hard to hear in lecture. The class is a bunch of little quizzes, 2 exams and 2 writing assignments. The quizzes are easy, exams are difficult and the writing assignments are graded heavily. Although the prof isn't great, the TA's are a great resource!
Really easy course - She records and posts every lecture online and doesnt take attendance at lectures. I showed up to my weekly discussion and skipped all lectures after the first week. I studied for one hour the morning of each exam and I got a 98% overall in the class.
Hard to hear her in lecture, heavy breathing into microphone. The class is really boring and quizzes are easy but the final tests are hard. I wouldn't take her classes again!
Professor is fine, but the lectures really don't matter in this course. As long as you do the assigned readings (a lot), you will do great! The lectures just reiterate the readings. Discussions are mandatory but they are helpful. Definitely an "easy A" class if you are looking for an interesting ethnic studies credit.
Prof Grant's lecture were pretty dry, but she posted the presentation slides which gave you all the info you needed to know. She assigns lots of readings which some were crazy long and dull. I gave up on these the second half of the sem. and was able to guess my way to 100%s on all reading quizzes. Its easy to put in minimal effort and be fine.
Probably the most boring class I've taken so far. The lectures are mandatory- and I can see why. They're so monotone and hard to pay attention to. Exams are okay but you'll do worse than expected. Papers u write have some very strange and incredibly unnecessary restrictions on it, but it's more or less easy. Just do the pre-lec. quizes and ul pass.
Only showed up to lecture cuz it counts for some points, went on my computer the rest of the time. There are weekly online quizzes that go along with the posted lectures so piece of cake. Prof Grant is a really nice person and it was interesting to hear about her work as a sociologist. 12/10 take this class.
Super nice and understanding!! Makes her material interesting! Definitely would take another class by her
Monica did a great job teaching soc 357. The content was very clear to follow and the workload was appropriate. There were about 8 homework assignments and weekly online quizzes. All of them were pretty easy. No final exam either. She did take attendance in class. Overall if you have to take soc 357 as a requirement, i would recommend her. Easy A!
Not sure how someone could take a course that should be easy and engaging, and turn it into the sheer garbage this course was. HW is busy work that provides no value to the student. Exams are FAR too specific, forcing you to memorize stuff from scholarly articles she sends you. She breathes heavily into her mic every lecture, this sound is very bad
She isn't a bad professor, she is dry in lectures but you don't necessarily need to go to them. Exams were easy and the writing assignments were easy too. If you go to class you don't need to study at all, but if you skip you have to study a few hours before the exam. In general, just choose the worst case answer and it is usually right.
Monica is extremely boring, however she does what she needs to convey all the necessary information. Class is not very difficult, and you don't need to attend lectures because all she does is read verbatim off of the slides, which are posted online.
Never gets through her lectures. Reads directly from the slides so no need to go to lecture. Midterms were directly on the articles you have to read, not on what she actually lectures. Very boring and poor professor.
The lectures were sometimes kind of dry but she is clearly very knowledgeable about the subject. 2 midterms, 2 papers; both were easy.
Professor Grant is the most boring and dull professor I've ever had. I would highly recommend taking a different class to fulfill a requirement. She reads right off the lecture slides (which she posts) so it's not necessary to attend a lecture unless you need a nap. This class has become more difficult and more focused on specific memorization.
Professor Grant is probably the most boring professor I've ever experienced. She reads right off of the slides, so attendance isn't really necessary as long as you look at the slides. The tests aren't that hard, but make sure to review the readings beforehand.
This class has the potential to be interesting, but Monica's lectures are disengaging and monotonous. She read straight off the lecture slides, so attending lecture was pointless. Getting feedback for the few assignments took forever, so you never really know where your grade stands. Highly recommend taking a different class to fulfill requirements
Boring lectures that I often slept through. Thankfully she posts the lecture slides and since she reads off them, those are really all you need to succeed. Two essays, two midterms, and a final. All of the exams were multiple choice and curved nicely. Very lazy because she makes her TA's do most of the work. Don't expect feedback at all really.
All of the midterms and final were questions directly from the readings (sometimes very, very specific). Lectures are mostly helpful to review information from readings, but her lectures are incredibly boring and dry. Be ready for bizarre extra credit opportunities like filling out surveys. Writing assignments are also graded pretty intently.
The most important thing to mention about Dr. Grant is that her exams are designed poorly. Instead of testing you on actual concepts you should know, she'll ask a very specific question about a graph that was up for 30 seconds in lecture. I love the topic of population problems, but Dr. Grant's course was as difficult as it was uninteresting.
Honestly, this class is not difficult at all if you do the readings before class and study off of the Concepts To Know. She's not the most engaging lecturer but some of the topics are interesting, I based my class attendance off of reading comprehension and topic interest. Easy A for ethnic studies credit
Her lecturing style usually involves 80% graphs and examples with 20% of slides you have to write down. She'll realize in the last 10 minutes she has 15 more slides to go through and will whip through them as fast as she possibly can. And she'll talk non stop the whole time just to fill space
Monica Grant was by far the worst professor I have had a UW Madison. She takes a class that should be very engaging and interesting and turns it into a class that is dry and frankly boring. Her tests are very specific, and focuses on very specific aspects of lecture and reading. Avoid taking a class taught by her at all costs.
A lot of reviews here are bad, but honestly, I really enjoyed the class. Admittedly, the first unit was pretty boring, but after that it improved. Dr. Grant does say "sort of" a lot, but I thought she was fine as a lecturer. Extra credit adds up to 4% to your final grade. Essays are short (450 words) and exams weren't bad if you study off the CTK.
Soc 170: Population Problems is an interesting class, but was more difficult than necessary for an ethnic studies credit. Prof. Grant talks very fast and does not engage with her audience at all. There is no textbook, but a lot of required readings on Canvas that are referenced in her tests. The tests and two short papers were harder than expected.
Very dry and monotone lectures that are difficult to follow. The majority of tests are questions regarding random facts that were mentioned once in lecture.
Her lectures are a little dry and cover a lot of material but otherwise not bad. The exams are average difficulty, 2 short writing assignments, lots of reading, and 2 easy but very helpful extra credit opportunities.
Associate professor Grant is terrible. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
The semester ends in 2 weeks and we just got our 3rd grade back. Lectures are dry and useless, exams are extremely wordy and hard, writing assignments are fine but it takes weeks to get a grade and feedback. If I knew it would be this awful I would've dropped the class, but by the time we got any grades back it was too late. Do NOT take this class!
I took this class because I was actually interested in population problems, but the way she teaches the class has completely disinterested me. Lectures are extremely dull. It's hard to stay focused in lecture because of it. Exams are quite difficult, but the two essays are alright. You'll have 2 extra-credit opportunities as well.
Professor Grant is the single least-impressive professor at UW-Madison I have had. Her lectures read directly off Powerpoint and her tests are meant to trick kids. She implements a test curve that adds more points to the lowest end of the spectrum, rather than an equal percent to all. She is neither knowledgeable nor inspiring in her subject.
This class should not be as hard as it is, tested on things that were glossed over very quickly in lecture. Lecture itself is boring and makes you zone out. While the content is interesting, the presentation of the content is badly executed. If you need a sociology credit or ethnic studies class, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Was suggested to take this class as an easy ethnic studies course. The class is extremely boring, there're only 2 tests and 1 final and the exams are very detailed. Professor reads the slides word for word and does not make the information interesting at all. There're a lot of readings that are long and boring as well. Do not take this class.
The material is very interesting and easy to understand but the exams are extremely hard. The exams are very detailed and based on the readings and graphs from lecture. There is extra credit and the exams were curved. Professor Grant goes through the lecture very fast so it is hard to keep up while taking notes, but she posts the slides.
Was gone for a week and wasnt understanding why most students didnt understand the assignment. A lot of students emailed to get help and she either didnt reply or said practically not to ask her. Her lectures are extremely boring and she went super fast. Took weeks to let TAs release grades and does not respond to emails at all. Not helpful
I took this class to fill my ethnic studies requirement and to receive an A, but the course material is noticeably harder than you'd expect for a class like this. That being said, it was hard to follow her in lectures because she was very bland with the material. Her tests cover VERY specific details, so study up.
I don't even know where to start. I struggled in the class so much, my advisor said it was going to be very easy but the professor changed for this year. Prof Grant reads the slides off word for word and then tests you on the most minute details of her lectures. The writing assignments seem easy, but they're not. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Really not hard at all. The first couple of days may seem intimidating, but the work is not difficult . No exams, but 3 group projects that aren't that difficult. Weekly (T/F) quizzes based off of lecture with two chances to take them. She asks questions in lecture on TopHat as a means of taking attendance, but you really could answer them at home.
Monica is a brilliant professor and she has a lot of personal and academic experience with research methods herself. The class is based on quizzes, group projects, homework & discussion posts. Group projects can be stressful at times with other classes considered but 357 is very manageable. I wish students gave her more respect than they do.
Professor Grant is very sweet and wants her students to do well, but there are not any exams and participation is not necessary, so you don't have to go to class- EVER. Discussion twice a week that is mandatory with 3 group projects, and weekly true or false online quizzes that you have two chances to take. Very easy A overall.
Her lectures are dry and boring. Her rubrics are so wordy that they start to confuse you. You have to take weekly quizzes (timed) and her questions are tricky with the wording. Don't take this class if you can avoid it. Not worth it at all.
3 group projects(superb, you'll get research prep!) and 3 homework assignments along with weekly quizzes, all manageable and well spread out in the semester. She is such a nice professor and she always comes to lecture prepared!
I enjoyed this class with Dr. Grant. I learned a lot, and her powerpoints are very well thought-out and organized. Exams were kind of ambiguous; she kept saying "go into detail," but it was never really clear to me what she wanted/expected as far as detail. However, no textbook for the class, which was nice. Overall, a good prof and easy class.
While Monica's class is easy and does not require a textbook, she has a very off-putting personality. She comes across as arrogant, and does not seem to enjoy teaching. She does not return graded work in a timely fashion, and tends to be rude. If you can look past personal flaws, the class is an easy GPA booster.
Nice professor and super easy class. Two exams and one paper but you do have to post on discussion board for at least 20 of the readings. The readings were mostly interesting but lecture got pretty boring especially at 9:30 in the morning. Overall worth it though
