Excellent Professor! You can attend office hours and ask direct questions about concepts. The professor is very patient and funny. He may poke fun here and there, but his teaching style, notes and guidelines are very clear. Just make sure to ask him to clarify something if you feel confused.
He is a good lecturer and explains concepts well, and I never had to read that much. The course is very well organized, and the difficulty would be pretty average. Exams are marked pretty harshly, but it's still easy to get a good grade in this class unless you're taking 5 other classes...
Not a bad professor. He lectures right along with the textbook so if you are confused you can always go there. I also appreciate the insane amount of practice problems we were given. However, he's just a mean guy. I tried to talk twice in class and he made fun of me. Very mean and unapproachable for questions in OH and before class.
Ivanov would have a rating above 4.5 on this website if it wasn't for his accent. He is funny, uploads lecture notes, is extremely well organized on canvas, goes through material at a good pace, and even has a list of extra challenge problems each week if you want more practice. Side note: Math 431 is meh
Good professor teaching a horrible class. Professor was funny and lectures were in-depth, but exams were very challenging.
The only real negative about him is that his accent and stutter can be difficult to understand. The course and lectures were clearly structured with plenty of examples. All the lectures and notes are uploaded online which was a godsend. The exams were a little difficult but were fairly graded.
I spent a lot of time on Zybooks (the textbook used for this class), reading and doing practice problems for participation. Lectures went over the readings' content and covered a few problems that are useful for written homework and exams. The lectures are recorded and posted. Mikhail responds to the piazza questions promptly.
Frankly, he wasn't a bad lecturer. Everything I didn't like was course structure, which he likely didn't have much control over. Exams are majority MCQ, which I haven't experienced in a math class since middle school, and proofs are graded not on understanding, but verbatim copies of hw proofs. Topics typically don't build upon older chapters.
Honestly Mikhail is overall a solid professor. He can explain concepts well and is straightforward with the grading policies.
bro is peak
Very good professor. Took MATH/CS 475 with him. Attendance not required. All lectures are recorded and uploaded along with his notes. Exam heavy course, exams make up 80% of the grade and homework 20%. Very lenient grader, gives generous partial credit and even then the class is curved on top of that.
He's an excellent professor. He makes the material very clear, and follows the textbook's pacing+instructions. He was very clear with explanations at office hours. I will be taking a class with him next semester. I think a lot of the negative reviews are from people who are taking a hard math class for the first time.
I'm not sure why professor Ivanov gets poor reviews. I thought he taught the material really well and made it easy to understand. I think a lot of people struggle understanding his accent, because he does have a pretty strong Russian accent and a bit of a stutter, but as long as you pay attention you shouldn't have any difficulty understanding him.
Ivanov is a decent professor, who attempts to make jokes and explain the concepts throughout class. Exams are hard but were heavily curved as a result. As many mentioned, he has a very thick accent (Russian). His letters and numbers appear to be part English alphabet mixed with the occasional Cyrillic look alike, usually with the r's and s's.
He makes very weird mistakes in lecture. One time he wrote the word "parts" with a v- "pavts". His letters and numbers often look the same too. Lowercase g's look very similar to his 9s and same with 4s and lowercase u's. So... good luck with following the board when integration comes up! Lol yeah he's a nice guy but I don't recommend taking him
Great practice examples in class, always willing to help on piazza or in person
Mr. Ivanov is a nice guy, but I hate to say that he is just not a good professor. He is hard to understand at times, and will jump into talking about the next subject without saying "now we are going to learn _____". I would recommend finding another professor. Took calculus BC in high school and this is still a very hard and confusing course.
Very blunt when lecturing and answering questions. Heavy accent is difficult to understand sometimes. His practice problems during lecture are helpful, but he doesn't explain the concepts like a teacher would, he teaches like a mathematician who just expects you to get it right away. One time, a sub taught, and I learned everything way more easily.
Professor Ivanov is a terrible professor but I don't know how much better you'll get. The tests are immensely hard. His accent and stutter made him unintelligible but you'll eventually get the hang of understanding him. It seemed like he got a kick out of seeing students struggle and getting things wrong. TAs straight suck. Be prepared to study
The professor goes over a lot of examples in class to ensure that you understand the topic. You will fail the class if you blame the professor for your lack of understanding. Take accountability for your work and study for the tests and you will do fine in the class.
Besides his accent, the teaching structure of the class is difficult. His lectures carried no structure. Exams were overly difficult, & the curves were very large for all exams because class scores were so low. Math lab is helpful but not for clarifying an entire concept, there was only 1 TA that people found helpful in discussion sections.
Overall this is a fairly easy class, but to no fault of his own, Professor Ivanov is very difficult to understand. If you struggle in math classes, I would do your best to find a different professor. I stopped going to lecture mid-September because he only made me more confused and I taught myself the rest of the course out of the textbook.
REALLY tough class. Expect to do a lot of work outside of class and go to office hours frequently. On average I probably spent 16 hours a week on this class and I'll probably end up with a C. He tries his best to explain things but you can tell he's not a social person. Smart guy, but as I said be prepared.
His english isn't clear which isn't his fault but already makes understanding the material more difficult. He doesn't explain the work he does on the board but rather just writes a bunch of problems down with no explanation. This class is overall extremely difficult and you never know what the exam will look like (a 70% was an A on the last exam)
one of the worst lecturers ever, and is incredibly rude to students who ask questions, although he does make the lectures cover most of the content from the book, so it's not a huge deal if you miss it as long as you learn the content from the textbook. exams were pretty difficult but i can imagine that's a department-wide standard (still annoying)
He has a very very thick and extremely hard to understand accent and barely explains concepts. Very unhelpful when asking him direct questions.
Idk some people think his accent is hard to understand but I like his lectures and he lays out material in an effective way. Math 211 in general is a hard class so don't fault him. If you haven't taken Calc before...GOOD LUCK you definitely need to attend OH and Discussions for extra help. Otherwise he was accommodating when I had issues.
his accent and his stutter makes it impossible to understand to the point where there is no point in going to lecture. if you do wanna go I recommend doing the unit before going to class and using his lecture as extra practice. Also those exams were bs...the curve added had to be like a 70-100 is an A. lol
could not understand him. he doesn't use sentences. no shade on his accent or english or anything but he just doesn't use sentences. he says a bunch of words and expects you to guess what he is saying. not a bad person but, hated the class.
It took awhile to get accustomed to Ivanov's style of teaching, definitely felt a lack of direction in the beginning of the course. If you aren't already a whiz at math, you must must must go to office hours frequently. the TA's are generally pretty awesome and are willing to explain topics from lecture thoroughly if you do not understand them.
He is overall an okay professor. He could've done a better going over some of the topics, but I'd say he did a good job on most of them. He makes sure students understand the topic. My advice would be to self study and don't be discouraged to go to lectures even if you feel lost. Ps. His accent sounds like Gru from Despicable Me :)
Lectures covered a lot of applicable material and enabled students to try problems on their own. His accent made understanding his explanations difficult, but not impossible. He does not look for raised hands for questions, so you have to shout to ask one. He has decently clear work that shows the steps, and he mostly does exam-tested concepts.
If you go to class and listen, you will do well. He does a lot of examples during lecture and prepares you well for tests.
The lecture problems are not explained well. Sometimes I don't even know what the problem is about, like what is the known information, what is the asking for, what are the steps. His writing on the blackboard is just messy and not organized in a logical or readable way. No coherent rubric.
A truly awful 222 prof. His accent is sometimes hard to understand and most of his lectures are disorganized and dull. He is sometimes rude to students when they ask questions. It's possible to do well by studying a lot using the homework, past exams, and discussion worksheets, but if you do well it will be in spite of Ivanov, not because of him.
Not easy to understand, not helpful in clarifying problems
I wish he could speak more clearly but that is out of my control. I don't believe he teaches class concepts very well, but like I said I can't understand what he is saying anyway. Lectures are still informative but I have had to supplement office hours and lots of questions during discussion. Basically you'll have to work harder with Ivanov.
He's okay. He has a bit of an accent that you have to get used to, but I found his lectures clear and helpful, even though they felt a bit rushed (there is a lot of material). Tough grader, but extremely generous curve (one exam, a 20% still got a C). He can also be quite rude, esp. if he deems your question "stupid", so think before you speak.
Easiest course I've ever have
Mikhail is a really nice person. He is very smart and the course is well organized. This is a hard course. There are lots of materials covered in this course. Mikhail did his best to explain things and provided lots of example problems. But you also need to put in lots of effort to get an A.
This professor can be hard to follow at times but he is good at answering questions. You just have to know what exactly your question is. He is also a tough grader on exams but he curves the class grade, which is really helpful.
He is a nice guy, but since it is his first year teaching it's very rough. The homework assignments are WAY harder than the examples in lecture, and the one midterm we have had was horrible, I can only hope that the final will be better.
