Definitely a lot of reading but that is expected. Readings generally fully covered in lectures, info on slides very useful for exams. Midterm and a final that were both short and not too hard. Two in class essays that were harder to prepare for and depending on your TA could be graded harshly. She learns people's names in a large lecture.

Complaints about readings are from lazy sudents. It's a political theory class, ofc there's going to be lots of reading. She covers all you need to know in class and posts full slides. Essays get rewrites to boost your grades and the study guides are very similar to the tests. Effort pays off in this class, you just need a good work ethic.

So much reading, but everything you need to know is covered in lectures anyway so reading feels pointless... Great study guides and if you get a TA you are definitely set. Lectures can be dry but grading is kind and focused on developing your own ideas. Will sometimes cold call. Not my favorite class, but definitely some people's.

I really liked the reading material and the seminar is mostly a group discussion which I enjoyed. I think Prof. Schwarze does a good job teaching and interacting with students but the class is still difficult. The biweekly readings can be over 60 pages and the two papers are tough. I would recommend but plan for this class to take up some time.

Prof. Schwarze assigns a fair amount of reading, some of which can be pretty dense but she goes over it in class and clarifies key concepts. Overall, I enjoyed the class and found it interesting and engaging. Biggest tip if i took it again would be to memorize the terms she goes over in lectures, as she will want to see them in your essays.

Schwarze frankly disappointed me in this course. It was a semester dominated by confusion and a lack of understanding. She grades too critically and does not account for creativity when it comes to writing papers and participating in class. Participation was hard as the professor seemed to tune out and be on here devices.

I really liked Professor Schwarze, despite her having shockingly low ratings on here. While this class is a lot of dense readings, her lectures made them all easy to understand. High grade boundary for an A, but it's relatively easy to do well on the graded assignments (rewrites on in class essays and easy tests).

This class is extremely heavy on the reading. Two readings a week that each range from 20-30 pages. The end of the semester felt rushed as she had a lot of material during the last three weeks, which made it difficult to keep up with late midterms and final exams. She also makes lectures similar to discussions, which I think was a waste of time.

For a seminar class, I've never heard a prof talk so much. Her expectations were way to high and very unclear. she had no clear grading scale and graded very harshly. I learned a lot but she has no regard for students mental health. She does not understand that she is one of multiple profs a student may have. do not take

Professor Schwarze is an amazing, caring professor. She was very passionate in her teachings, and explained the course material very well throughout the semester. To show how caring she was for the students, she remembered every student's name that participated in a 200 student class, and encouraged group discussions, which i enjoyed alot.

Poli. Sci. 160 with Professor Schwarze was amazing! I originally did not have high hopes, and I will warn people that this course has dense and difficult readings. But, if you attend lecture Prof. Schwarze does an amazing job of helping you make sense of the readings, she genuinely cares about her students and is one of the best lecturers at UW.

Honestly the meanest professor I've taken thus far at UW

Does not give you the opportunity to think independently about the text. Worse online experience yet. Very tough grader.

My TA described this class as the "salt shaker" approach to political theory. Every week we read 3-4 excerpts on a big political idea like truth, democracy, freedom, etc. The downside to this structure is you never go very in-depth on a single author and often feel overwhelmed with the amount of difficult and out-of-larger-context readings.

She may be decent for in-person, but as an online prof, she was the worst I've ever had. We were lucky to get 20 minutes worth of lecture a week. Used content from other professors. Clearly put no work into the little content provided and instructions were always unclear. I nearly had a mental breakdown. She is absolutely the worst professor. AWFUL

I had Schwarze online so I mainly heard her podcasts and lectures, which were pretty general so I had to seek out other explanations online. This class was hard, but the group discussions (online) were pretty fun. You can get away with not reading if you do in depth research yourself. This class introduces important concepts for the PS major.

Prof. Schwarze was great! The texts for this class were dense and hard to read, but she did a great job of explaining further during lecture. During lecture she made students talk in mini discussion groups that were very helpful to interpret the text in other ways.

I hated going to lecture for this class because she really makes you participate by having group discussions and doing group activities in lectures, which is weird, so if you're like me and just want to sit & listen to someone speaking in lectures, you're not gonna like it. SUPER easy A though, I never even read any of the texts. Lots of busy work.

Schwarze is a great professor. She clearly lays out every reading so that if you do not understand the content while reading yourself, you will after lecture. One comment is that during lecture she sometimes speaks too quickly. Great class for a 100 level and I would recommend making sure that you complete the study guides she hands out!

Prof. Schwarze is clearly passionate about the material and is clear in her expectations. She genuinely cares about her students' success, and tbh, you don't have to thoroughly read all of the material outside of class because she goes so in depth in what you need to know in her lectures. Great woman, great prof - I would definitely recommend!!

Political theory. You don't have to read literally any of the books because she covers them so well in lecture. Show up to lecture and you'll get an A. Personally, I loved the class and can't see how anybody could give her a bad rating. She made me realize I wasn't making a huge mistake by majoring in political science.

This is by far the hardest class, and professor, I have ever had at UW-Madison. She is extremely knowledgeably on her stuff, but fails to remember we are students and not professionals. I felt lost in this class the entire semester and petrified to participate because of the unfair standards she holds you too. Also puts you in weird groups.

Dr. Schwarze is clearly passionate about political science and she seems like a nice nice person. Unfortunately, the way the class is structured makes it difficult to succeed. The course jumps right into reading Plato, Machiavelli, and Hobbes, so basically no one knows what's going on at first. Notes aren't posted; lectures are boring and unclear.

Professor Schwarze had extremely boring lectures. Unsurprisingly, it was rare to see the class over half attendance. Reading wasn't really necessary. Grades came down to a few assignments, and grading felt extremely arbitrary. She knows her stuff, but might be also be a robot. Common Phrases: "in the interest of time," "benevolent dictator."

I think the way the class was structured was extremely difficult. We went through probably 6 chapter type books, but only certain parts of each one. The course was centered around "injustice" which is beyond vague. The books are really dull, probably because they're so old. She also assigned seats, in a 100 some person class, which is weird

Overall a pretty average professor. She knows what she's talking about and adequately conveys ideas and class material in lecture. The class itself is pretty uninspiring. There's a lot of reading that's not remotely interesting, specifically once you get to Hobbes. The main topic is injustice, and if that seems vague, that's because it is.

Awesome prof!

Fair about letting you redo things, but completely lacked teaching abilities. She answers questions with questions and has unattainable standards. Liked her as a person, but she to reexamine her teaching skills.

The professor has crazy standards. She clearly loves her subject area but she seems to think everyone in her class should understand it as well as she does. Lots of reading, no class notes online, difficult grader, pop quizzes and lectures can be semi-interesting. If you decide to take her class be prepared to WORK.
