Hes very passionate about the subject which you want in a professor. Sometimes I wish he'd go more in depth on certain topics that do get covered in exams and quizzes, but overall his style of teaching is pretty solid. The exam structure is my biggest criticism as you have one midterm and one final which is too little imo, but not bad overall
Fun class, lots of cool rocks and natural disaster case studies. Prof. Cardiff gives good lectures with multimedia demonstrations. He uses in-class questions, and attendance counts towards your grade. Labs are the most difficult part of the class (they often run overtime). The textbook is easy to read, but it covers a lot each week- take notes!
This class was excruciatingly boring (one of those classes that everyone is playing the NYT games to ease the pain). He has very little grade transparency as well. Final grades were put in and they appeared much differently in grade letter than canvas had indicated all semester. This class is a definite no from me.
Not a terrible class if you go to every lecture and discussion. I just didn't enjoy the material.
Some concepts and assignment expectations weren't made clear and the discussion section usually left students more confused. However, I think the course gives a good overview of many geological concepts and was an interesting class to take for General Education requirement.
Professor Cardiff is extremely passionate in his work. His course taught me a lot, despite some challenge with labs and the pandemic. I definitely recommend him.
Prof/TAs had a good response time outside of class. First few labs were easy and then got somewhat difficult (and very time consuming). Time limits on the quizzes were usually too short because they were very thorough questions. If you're taking this for the physical science breadth requirement only, you'd probably be better off taking GEOSCI100.
Meh. Quizzes are tough but you get two attempts. The labs started off easy but then got unbelievably tough and a lot of math was required. A bit all over the place with regard to the units and difficulty of stuff. No exams though!
Absolutely hated this class. The quizzes have ridiculously hard, specific questions and u never have more than 10 mins to complete the quiz. 1 min per question and they're lengthy. he is a nice guy but obviously does not care about students. labs are super hard and confusing, nothing like lectures. do not recommend unless ur majoring
Super chill dude. Love the guy and the class was awesome(very easy ha ha).
Loved this summer class! There were no tests, only quizzes that make up 20% of your grade. 80% is discussions, labs and a group project. Prof Cardiff is super kind and accessible by email and canvas. He also is transparent and communicates well. Easy A if you spend time understanding the material. Great prof and wants all to do well.
Took this as a summer class. Necessary to read the textbook and participate, but not difficult to get an A if you apply yourself. Sometimes the labs were frustrating and the quiz questions didn't pertain to what was learned. One group project. Lots of feedback which was enjoyable and furthered learning. Very accessible through email!
Halfway through his summer online class. Rudimental class you can definitely get A in, but tough class to give a care about. Questions on labs and quizzes are feedback oriented but you aren't given enough information, which (honestly) makes him seem dense because he's looking for an educated answer from an uneducated question.
Cardiff is awesome. No midterms or finals, and he really tries to make his lectures more exciting for an intro Geoscience course, and you can tell he wants kids to learn. If you study lectures notes and skim the book for your weekly quizzes, as well as answer TopHat in class you will be fine. Also offers an optional final to make up quiz grades!
uncaring, and harsh for grading. i wouldn't recommend. LISTEN! UNLESS YOU ARE GOOD AT PHYSICS, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS ESPECIALLY WITH HIM. He will never understand your background.
DON'T MISS A QUIZ. He changes things up every year so this may not be helpful but if you do not do your quiz you cannot make it up and it sucks your grade down. Cardiff is a typical big-lecture professor, but always strives to make his lectures upbeat and relatable.
Geo106 was an easy A! No midterms or finals, only weekly online quizzes with two attempts and weekly discussion worksheets. Not necessary to read the textbook, but you do have to show up for class due to tophat participation. Would definitely recommend this class.
The class caters to a less technical understanding of how environmental processes affect one another. I liked Cardiff, but I feel that sometimes he strayed a little further from the basics than he needed to and sometimes said things that I knew weren't entirely accurate (from other classes I had taken in specific areas). Overall, fun class, Easy A
Show up to class and you'll do fine grade-wise. He's a funny guy who teaches the content well, but reading the book helps
Really cares about students and makes lectures as interesting as he can. Good use of questions to get class involved. Tests are straightforward, just pay attention, right good notes, and read the required chapters.
Hi lectures were ambiguous and the material was unrelatable. He depended way a lot on our ability to read a difficult textbook & his "practice quizzes" had NOTHING to do with the exams. I will never take another geology class again because he made it so boring and uninteresting. If you're taking it for a physical science credit, you're screwed.
Awesome professor. Definitely recommend. When he lectures you can tell how passionate he is about geology and teaching; always striving to make the intro class better. Unlike most classes, his lectures are actually a lot of fun to go to, wish I could go to more.
