Gave a lot of busy work in the course but made everything very clear and understandable. Easy grader

He has truly produced the class of all time. The topics were taught, and way too much was written. Truly had the course ever.

Had to write only two essays one as a midterm and one as a final. Attendance is part of grade, but not that much. If you go to office hours he will give you ideas for your essay if you're stuck or have a concept but its not fully developed. you have to give a quick presentation on a reading/ you get weekly readings. you listen to a lot of music

You can tell he's clearly passionate about this material and wants people to engage and analyze the readings. Attendance is required and part of grade. His lectures are super boring though. The midterm and final paper are the only thing that require much work. Sparknote the books to aid u in writing papers. TA's grade leniently. Pretty easy class

I decided to take this class to satisfy the literature requirement. I thoroughly regret that decision. This class is such a waste of time and there is a ton of useless busy work. I am paying to learn absolutely nothing and waste my time.

His lectures were fairly boring but he only lectured in about half of the classes with guest lectures being better and comprising the other half. Course revolves around 3 1100 word essays and participation. Seemed like if you could put coherent thoughts together on paper and show up to discussion with thoughts you would receive an AB or better

A really intelligent man, very "woke." Acknowledges that what he's teaching not a lot of people will understand, but he makes it fun by framing the class around Black Panther. Made me want to continue in a Cultural Studies field and it's my minor now. He gets upset that not a lot of people read, so read (it'll help you on the two papers).

Matthew Brown is a great professor. He really understand that it is an introductory course and doesn't make it more difficult than that. The lectures are good, but you can skip some and still get an A. Easy A class, put a little work in and you will get a good grade.

Matthew Brown is one of the best professors I've had at Madison. He is very passionate about the subject matter and makes it very interesting, the books we read are top-notch, and I learned a whole lot. You should read all the books if you want to get much out of the class, although that can be a lot of work.

Genuinely cares about your learning

Took this online class to satisfy literature breadth requirements and it ended up being more work than all of my other classes combined. By the end of the course you end up reading an entire book a week and writing an essay per week that totals roughly 10 hours of work. The TAs grade harshly and do not give good feedback. Don't take this class.

One of the worst professors I've ever had. Took a week to respond to my email, and didn't provide me accurate information. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN AVOID IT.

I took this class for a literature breath and I hate literature yet I would recommend this class to take for a literature breath. It was interesting and not too difficult.

There are weekly posts to learn@uw, which are pretty straightforward, one exam, which is take home, and then a final project. Overall, pretty easy class. I never really went to lecture, there is no attendance. The readings are super boring and kind of confusing if you're not into the art of african storytelling.

Each class begins by passing around the sign in sheet: attendance is nearly mandatory, as you lose points for not showing up to lecture. Readings are light and easy. Midterm is an (open book) online multiple choice exam + essay. Final exam is constructing a video or essay analyzing a story. Fairly easy literature credits, would recommend.

There is a lot of required reading for class but readings are usually very interesting and easy to finish. Matt is awesome and really makes learning about AfricanNative American literature fun. You are required to show up and go to class but it is a laid back environment and Matt really knows his stuff and is passionate about the material.

Brown is very passionate about what he does, which is evident as he rants during lectures. The online portion of the class is somewhat difficult but he is always willing to help during his office hours. He starts off grading leniently but becomes a strict grader as the semester goes on. The midterm is fairly difficult. Final is a project.

The class is half in person and half online. It should be completely online. All work is submitted through Learn@UW through modules (1 each Friday). Lectures are completely pointless and have no value but attendance is mandatory. It's an easy A and I only did 50% of the reading, but it's extremely boring.
