Trotter is super passionate about the material, super nice, and is super helpful in office hours. However, if you are stuck with a bad TA it can make the class horrible. There was extra credit opportunities and if you submit a regrade she will most likely raise it.
A real gem indeed. So funny, sweet, and knowledgeable. Super dedicated to making class a space for everyone to learn and made everyone's opinions feel valid.
Mary is extremely kind, knowledgeable, and interested, I can't recommend her classes strongly enough.
Amazing professor, you do not have to enjoy theatre to like this class. Mary makes this a very interesting class and easy. She is such a fun character and also funny and entertaining. Would take again
Dr. Trotter is amazing! She makes theatre fun and accessible to everyone. In her 120 course, she makes sure to cover all the cultures she can, so that it's not focused just on the western narrative of theatre. She's funny and laidback. While there was a lot of reading required, she covered everything very well in class so it was okay if you skimmed
Professor Trotter is learned, dependable, and generous, which is an unbelievably rare combination in a lecturer. Strongly recommend taking a class with her, and strongly recommend recognising what a gem she is.
Professor Trotter was a really interesting professor in the best way possible! Her lectures are interesting and she really helps you look a plays from a different perspective. If you read the plays from the textbook, you'll do fine.
I was given an end-of-the-semester progress grade and I was at a high A, so when I saw that I got an AB at the end of the semester, I was confused. I decided to email my TA, who then told me to email Dr. Trotter. I emailed her and she didn't respond with a reasoning for my grade, so I decided to wait and email her again. She still didn't respond:)
Mary is very nice but this class was so unbelievably boring. 3 papers, two exams and discussion participation make up your grade. Who you get for your TA will make or break your grade. In my experience, this class was more work than it needed to be. Not incredibly hard but exams have very specific questions that may only be mentioned once.
Mary Trotter may be charismatic in class, but she is easily the single most incompetent professor at UW. Drastically unhelpful.
Relatively easy lit credits. We read 11 plays (ranging anywhere from approx. 10-75 pages each). Be aware- some exam questions may ask for small details that were mentioned just once, either in lecture or the readings. 93+A (20 pts of extra credit available; class is out of 1000 pts). Professor is very energetic.
Professor Trotter was very charismatic and animated during her lectures, which helped because I did not have any interest in theatre. If you need a 3 credit literature class, I would still take it. The only negative about this class was that the tests asked you to recall very miniscule details from the plays and lectures, which I thought was unfair
Mary Trotter is a great lecturer. You definitely have to read the plays for this class but they are actually fun and interesting! Tests are based on detail of the book and the papers are based on plays you have to go see outside of class.
Her lectures are entertaining. She is witty and engaging.
Mary is super funny and keeps lectures entertaining. This was especially helpful for me since I had little interest in the subject. Whole class is graded on 2 3-page papers, 2 exams and 1 theatre critic. Subject was easy and was more interesting than I thought it would be!
Fun and easy lit credits. Just show up and read the plays, and you should get an A. The tests are easy. If you take the Comm B it's a little harder because you have to write a 7-page paper throughout the semester, but it's definitely worth it. Would recommend.
Easy A as long as you put in a little effort.
Super easy class but also really interesting! She makes lectures fun and I think she is awesome.
This class is pretty easy. Exams aren't too hard, but many of the questions ask about silly details that might have been mentioned once in lecture. Trotter gives tons of opportunities for extra credit, too.
Fun class and teacher. The readings for the class were intellectually intriguing and she made them even more enjoyable. She is a natural lecturer. The tests are not only fair, they are easy.
Decent Professor. Tested on MINOR details in the text. The tests should be much easier. Not a class I loved, not a class I hated.
It's not hard to get a good grade but all you are tested on is random details from the books and power points. Useless information. Some of the texts were really interesting but we hardly elaborated on the interpretations. Didn't gain much out of it. Very pretentious
Mary was great. She kept the lectures entertaining and sparked my interest in the plays we read. The class itself was easy enough and your grade is based off of your section (participation, attendance, weekly write ups) and the midterm and final exam which were easy if you reread the plays and lecture slides.
Syllabus: 10 required play readings (10 - 100 pages each), 3 five-hundred word essays, 2 exams. Workload was fairly light, material was interesting. Easy literature credits. Professor Trotter was engaging enough. She has a pretty good sense of humor.
Professor Trotter is very passionate and engaging. Her teaching style is very enthusiastic. Her tests are multiple choice and really aren't too difficult. She gives a lot of extra credit. If you need a literature credit, take this class.
I've had Professor Trotter for many theatre classes; she is enthusiastic, a fair grader, and has a wealth of theatre and history knowledge that is truly remarkable. What I really like is how flexible she is in her teaching; she can modify lessons immediately if the needs of the class call for it. Great teacher, interesting classes!
I LOVE PROFESSOR TROTTER. She's hilarious and incredibly passionate about her subject. Powerpoints are online, but I love going to class to learn from her. She's always available to help in office hours and genuinely reaches out to her students.
Quirky but in a good way. If you say something stupid she never shoots you down. Easy class. She is fun and the workload is not overwhelming by any means
One of those pretentious theatre people.
She has a good sense of humor, but I don't know how much planning she did before class. We watched a lot of videos and the students had to give 75min presentations. I've never heard of that before.
