Extremely knowledgable and very interesting lecturer! If you pay attention, don't miss lecture, and do the homework and you will do just fine. I wish I could take GER351 again, Louden is by far my favorite professor in the department.
Louden is addicted to cold-calling and not afraid to grill students in front of the class when they don't know the answer; exhibited no sympathy regarding absences (even medical issues). Pay attention to the homework and practice, they make up the majority of the grade. Missing one homework assignment was an immediate 5% of your final grade, etc.
This class would not have been that bad if he wouldn't focus on one slide for 20 minutes. His slides would mostly display pictures and no words. It was hard to take notes. He also would cold call students and sometimes resulting in belittling them if they were unsure. He has his favorites and that shows in his grading.
Best professor ever. Readings were very manageable and interesting. Valuable discussions each lecture. Very caring and involved in the Amish community were he assists in language barriers and education. Basically the Gandhi of Amish education. You are missing out if you don't take one of his classes. Understanding, caring, respectful, wonderful.
Professor Louden is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. He makes class enjoyable. He does like to call on you, so know the material from the reading before coming to class. Formulate an opinion to every question he asks, before he calls on someone. There is a large 4000+ word essay assigned for the final, start at least a month prior.
Prof. Louden is by far one of the best. I took the course "The Amish" on a whim and it was the best choice I've made yet. There are weekly essays but he is a fair grader. Lectures were more of a discussion b/c of small class size and were very interesting. I highly recommend Prof. Louden and this course!
Mark is extremely approachable and truly cares about his students. He is a clear professor and welcomes your thoughts and opinions. Do not be afraid to talk in his class, he will never make you feel dumb. He is a great lecturer and you will learn a lot during his class! Highly recommend! Best professor in the German Department.
Prof. Louden is easily the best professor I have had at UW. He is really knowledgeable about what he does and is a very helpful, friendly person. He is very engaging and keeps lectures interesting and funny. Really cool guy to talk to outside of class too. Highly recommend!
Prof. Louden is definitely one of the best professors I've had. He takes the time to get to know students and is more than willing to meet up outside of class to chat. Short papers were due every week to make sure we did the reading, but the majority of the course was structured around small group discussions in class. Would highly recommend!
Professor Louden is easily the best professor I have had at UW-Madison. Not only is he an expert in his field, but also a wonderful teacher who is genuinely interested in his students. Make sure you pay attention in class because he likes to randomly call on people. I would highly recommend this class to anyone!
Fantastic professor, easily the best German professor at UW. Very helpful and easy to understand. He's hilarious and keeps things interesting. Homework is helpful and not overly frequent. Tests are of average difficulty if you've been to class. Also, make sure to stay on your toes in class, because he will call on you and make you feel like a fool.
By far one of THE BEST teachers I've ever been priveledged enough to have. He explains everything so thoroughly. He is patient, clear, funny, personable, honest and always eager to help. He loves his job and I loved being in his class. I can't say enough good things about him!
Great German professor. Very clear, very helpful. Most of his classes have no final exams but the work is spread out through the semester.
Best professor ever!!! Hilarious. Down to earth. Approachable. Real. Did I mention..... hilarious???? I will never forget his stories! By the end of the semester he will be your best friend. Plus I love the way he color-coordinates his sweater vests. Hot!
Great teacher...doesn't just care about German but cares about all languages. Best teacher in town.
Great person, has a true interest in the subject and his students!
Great guy, willing to help and eager to teach. Best german professor so far!
The best professor I have ever had. He's very friendly and sometimes hilarious. One graded homework assignment a week and two take home exams.
Fantastic Professor! Makes class very interesting and is extremely funny with all of his accents. VERY knowledgeable in many subjects. Best German Professor I've had so far.
Amazing
Best German teacher I've ever had!
Was the resident director during my year in Freiburg. He's ridiculously nice and approachable, gave me lots of extensions when I was really sick, and he teaches well too. Best UW German prof I've had. I'm so sad I can't take another class with him.
He is by far the best German teacher I have ever had. He loves teaching, and the material really interests him. He is very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions. He rewards effort. If you show that you try in the class he will give you a good grade. Very funny, makes topic interesting, and easy to understand. Take a class with him!
Best language professor I've ever had. EXTREMELY helpful and accommodating. He is a sincerely good teacher. You can tell he likes teaching & likes to help students. He's a genius when it comes to linguistics. 352 (German Language in America) was probably the most interesting language course I've taken. Effort is key 2 a good grade in this class.
Absolutely amazing professor. 351 (Linguistics) was incredibly easy and fun. I probably learned more in this German class than any of the other combined. I'd recommend him for any class, I'm sure they're all great. Highly recommended, you will not be disappointed.
Awesome class! Both fun and interesting! He's a great professor and knows his stuff. Go talk to him if you need help, participate in class, do homework and you will get an A almost guarenteed. Exams aren't too tough.
The only professor I've had who actually knew the names of every student in his class & seemed to really care about how we did. For someone so accomplished, he's really down to earth. There are so many professors at UW with huge honking egos -- they could take a lesson from Professor Louden.
Very cool guy, extremely helpful and eager to answer any questions.
