Marcelo is one of the best professors in the Spanish department, 100 percent recommend a class with him (I have taken multiple)! Participation gets you out of your comfort zone, which is perfect to becoming comfortable and better with speaking Spanish

This class and his other classes are like the same thing repeated over and over again. Exact format copied. Downgraded for missing a single class or not talking every single class. Exams are hit or miss, sometimes easy sometimes hard depending what he feels like asking on the essay questions and grading on those is subjective. Wouldnt take another

Possibly my favorite professor in the Spanish department! I don't even like literature but he made discussions so fun I looked forward to each class. He's very generous in his exam/paper grading as well. For a full participation grade, you have to speak up once or more in each class, which I found a bit unusual but I appreciate the objectivity.

One of my fav professors, lecture based and graded on exams and papers. Exams are easy if you take notes, I didn't do some of the readings and still got A's on the exams. He is very helpful and is always willing to talk after class, he even gave me an extension once when I was struggling to get my essay in. V cool dude who really loves literature

He talks a lot, but he is trying to take recommendations and change the way he teaches to accommodate to us which is really nice of him. Graded by 3 exams, 2 papers, and attendance. Personally I like this format because there's basically no weekly work, just prepare before each exam and write a good paper and you'll be fine. I recommend 7/10 :)

6 grades for the entire term in Marcelo's class: 3 exams, 2 papers and participation grade. If you're down with that format, take his class. He's a nice man, accessible outside class, cares about students but he's a talker. YOU HAVE TO DO THE READING. If you don't you won't pass. If you speak in lectures and use proper grammar on tests, you're good

He loves to hear the sound of his own voice and barely gives students the opportunity to participate yet he grades hard on participation. It seems like he uses his class to have a position of power.

Marcelo is fantastic!

Marcelo is a GREAT professor. He is such a fantastic lecturer, and he made the class very interesting and fun. He clearly enjoys what he does, and he always has such intelligent things to say during lecture.

I love this guy. I hate Spanish lit classes but he made me want to take more of them. He explains everything well but demands attendance, which is fair. Exams are relatively easy since he doesn't believe in them. He comes off tough but he is so nice and really inspirational.

Marcelo is easily one of the most fun professors I've had at UW. He comes across as a gruff guy on the first day of class, but he's fun, involves everyone in the class well, and makes stuff that could otherwise be dry incredibly interesting. I'd give him the highest possible recommendation for any Spanish class you could take with him.

An extraordinary professor. I've never really enjoyed literature classes, but he made this one (even in Spanish!) interesting, entertaining, and educational. I would highly recommend him.

Marcelo is the best! On the first day he seems a bit gruff but he's actually a really nice guy. Readings are interesting and class time is devoted to discussing them. Just take notes on what he says and look them over before the exams. You'll be golden because most of the questions are pretty general/obvious. Take this class with him!

Marcelo is awesome. Even though class is 'mandatory,' I wouldn't have skipped this class for the world. My Spanish is passable at best, but I found myself fascinated during every lecture and definitely left the class with a profound appreciation for literature. Take Marcelo, you won't regret it.

Marcelo is a really nice guy, and he is very passionate about this class. His exams are also easy as long as you go to class and take notes on what he says. He is also good at making the class more of a discussion style, with everybody stating their opinions about the readings. This kept it interesting rather than just lecturing about the readings.

Keep up with the readings and go to class and you'll be fine. He's pretty generous on the exams and is over all really passionate about poetry. The classes are pretty fun and energetic and definitely keep you entertained.

Marcelo is one of the best professors on campus. I was really dreading taking 224 because I don't have much interest in literature in general, much less Spanish lit, but this was honestly one of my favorite classes I have ever taken. Marcelo's passion is contagious, and he really makes you think. I looked forward to going to this class every day.

Usually don't write reviews but I felt the need to for Marcelo. He's one of the best profs I've had at Madison. He might scare you on the first day, but he's really the nicest, most helpful and funny guy you'll meet. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well. Tests are extremely fair. Definitely take 224 with Marcelo if you can!

Hey was AWESOME! Funny, easy to talk to, not too serious. He takes the material and makes it fun- and believe me, that was necessary for some of the stuff we read. HIGHLY recommend him and the class!

Marcelo rocks. Take 224 with him if you can. He was interesting, entertaining, and out of the class, I gained a huge appreciation of spanish literature and literature in general. He really makes the class fun and exciting. Most people get A's as long as they participate and remember his opinions to reguritate for exams. Great guy.

Oh Marcelo. He is by far amazing! The tests arent that difficult if you pay attention in class, he can come off a little stern at times but wants students to be interested in the subject...I've had him 3 semesters in a row now and would take him over and over and over again!

Excellent professor; very encouraging of student interpretation of poetry and essays read in class

By far my favorite prof at the UW. This guy is out of this world!! Funny, nice, AMAZING TEACHER. I learned so much form his class. I wish I had more than 350 words to write about this guy!! I love Marcelo, and his funny colloquial stories about growing up in chile. You learn about a lot more than just lit in his class. Our whole class loved Marcelo

VERY knowledgeable and funny!

Wonderful professor! Very nice guy, extremly helpful in class and outside class. He is an assoc. prof, and so his class sizes are usually pretty small (I had about 35 ppl). Not extremely demanding in his exams; as long as you know your stuff and have read the material, you will do well. About half get A's on exams.

Marcelo is a fantastic teacher. I had him for a power lecture, and he managed to keep it extremely interesting, but get the point of the literature across at the same time. One of my favorite UW profs, I highly recommend talking him if you have the chance!

Funny and clear (if you can understand his Chilean accent). Text can be a little rough but in general not too hard if you put the time into it. Coño!
