Could not get my engaged in the lecture with the content and style that he decided to go over (talked heavily about the wars and political things). Forced us to BUY his UNFINISHED, MOSTLY INSERTED QUOTES FROM OTHERS, and ONLY used for the sole purpose of assigning homework out of, and could not grade them quick enough for feedback. Was not worth it
Only 3 assignments - 2 were questions that we had to answer by using a textbook we bought from Prof K (his own) to answer (these had to be accurate, or else he would take off many points, without reasoning; book = obscure); rest based on paper; the professor grades the asgs and he takes TOO long so you can't use the 1st asg to help with 2nd.
Professor Kleijwegt had three total writing assignments for the entire semester, which pretty much collectively make up your whole grade. Questions are written poorly and make zero sense even if you read the text thoroughly. He grades extremely harshly and TAs aren't helpful whatsoever. Lectures have nothing to do with what the class is graded on.
Kleijwegt assigned three timed online quizzes during the semester. The questions were worded terribly, made no sense, were full of double negatives and impossible to understand even if you'd done the readings and taken notes.
Superficial and indiffetent to student needs. Very simplistic. Silly quizzes, no meat. Waste of time.
I thought prof Kleijwegt was great! This was the perfect summer class. I was able to get most of the homework for the week done in like 3 hours on a sunday morning. Super easy. Class was really interesting and the textbook was actually cool. He was very responsive to questions. Great guy in general and I really enjoyed this class.
This professor is amazing!
This class was graded by very few (strange) assignments that did not require knowledge from lecture. He is a good lecturer, but the organization of the class and assignments was confusing. There was not much work, but it was hard to know what would get an A on the work that was required.
Prof. Kleijwegt seemed to be in a great mood despite classes being at 8:00 in the labyrinth of Mosse Humanities. Super informed and passionate about his teaching and loves to talk to students. Information from lectures was published on Canvas.
Professor Kleijwegt is a very good lecturer - he is enthusiastic about the material and he does a good job turning that enthusiasm into helpful lectures. However, this class had very few assignments that were relatively disorganized and didn't have clear direction. Other than the sloppy assignments, Kleijwegt is a really good professor.
This class is heavily dependent on the difficulty of TAs. If the TAs for your semester are easy-graders, then this class will be a cakewalk, but if they are extremely difficult, the class suddenly jumps in difficulty. There are only 5 graded assignments, and if the TAs grade tough, be prepared to work for your grade!
He doesn't give any feedback on any of the assignments, the assignments don't correlate with the lectures at all, and he made us buy a textbook he wrote for the assignments.
Professor Kleijwegt obviously knows what he's talking about, but he and his TAs give no grading standards, grades take absurdly long to come out, and lectures just have no connection to the course. Sad to say that I don't think this couse actually taught me anything either, frankly.
wasnt a fan of prof K or this class. im guessing this class was hurt a lot by its abbreviated (4-week) length in the summer term. content felt rushed. you need to have a really good understanding of Roman history going into this class if dont want to immediately feel lost. feedback can also take awhile to receive and can be very vague or cryptic.
doesn't interact w his students AT ALL, at least not in covid times. no lectures, no office hours, doesn't respond to emails in a timely manner, only ever reached out to make us buy his textbook, which is a shame bcuz you can tell from the modules that he is very knowledgable and passionate abt what he teaches. multiple choice tests are convoluted
Never once met or saw this professor. He emailed us once to force us to pay for his textbook, which we used once, then never heard from him again. This class was entirely led by the TA, and there were only two tests and two projects as grades for the entire class. Super easy if you read the modules and know how to write an essay.
Here's the deal: you will never meet or hear his voice (during the time of corona, of course). He had two TAs who did literally everything. The premise of this class is to read in the textbook, then read the modules explaining what you just read (only thing you get from the professor) and then read another discussion topic and discuss that in class
I really enjoyed my time with Dr. Kleijwegt. Although I'm not much of a history buff, his passion for Greek and Roman history was inspiring. The lectures are difficult, as they're typed in word documents instead of on a slideshow. Also be aware that the two writing assignments are graded strictly and make up 40% of your grade. Use office hours!
I found his lectures to be pretty engaging, and he is very knowledgeable about Greek and Roman history. The class is graded on two online midterms (multiple choice), two writing exercises, participation for discussion, and the final. His multiple choice questions are difficult, but he does a great job at preparing the students for what he wants.
Content is based entirely on textbook so do the readings and your set for the exams. He is very clear about what he expects on them and dedicates lecture time to review. However, everything is graded by your TA (mine was obnoxious), so all that really matters is your relationship with them. They will determine whether you love or hate the course.
Very knowledgeable and passionate about class material. Lecture was definitely enjoyable for anyone interested in Roman history. However, you are graded on a single midterm, two writing assignments, and a picture matching assignment. How you did on the midterm and picture matching assignment depended on catching tiny details from lecture
I don't care much about Roman History, but Dr. K made the class fairly interesting. I can't say it was always riveting, but he knows how to lecture and he's clearly passionate about the material. Very easy writing assignments, but the multiple choice is always very tricky and not at all intuitive. Even the TA's complained about it.
Lame. Take a different history class. Graded o random crap. Too much salt to give an unbiased opinion.
THe class was okay, he was just not too useful. He gave us assignments that were sovereign from the lectures (so, don't go). Go to discussions, though. They are needed for your participation grade (that you didn't know you had...).
Marc is an unbelievable expert in his field (Gladiators and Roman History). I entered class with no knowledge of everyday Roman life and Gladiators, and now I feel that I could lecture on it. He teaches you to think critically about historical artifacts and "experts." No tests, relatively easy papers, if you do the work you'll get an A.
Marc is incredibly passionate about the topic of Rome, and specifically Roman Gladiators, which was the subject for this class. He is always ready to answer questions and focuses on what is important to deepen the students understanding of the essential information. The writing assignments are very easy as long as you've paid attention in lecture.
Very interesting class on Gladiators. Grade entirely based off of essays. There's almost no work besides some readings to help you write the essays. Not a easy A class. I tried my best on all the essays and ended up with a B. TA grades harder than the professor so hopefully you get the professor to grade your essay more.
Basically like story-time. This class is graded on 3 things: 30% essay 1, 30% essay 2, 40% final. The essays are extremely easy (usually pick your own topic). Advice is to write on something tried and tested. He gave me a low grade on 1st essay cause he didn't like my argument. He used the practice final questions for the final though!
Fairly easygoing guy, takes a keen interest in going beyond the historical "facts" and pushing us to ask deeper questions. His sense of humor is great as well. The material itself can be hit or miss at times, but overall it's pretty interesting even if you aren't a history major. Two easy assignments and a multi-part final. Discussion is mandatory.
I guess it depends on what TA you get. I went to 3 lectures and studied 2 days before the midterm and final and got a B in final grade. He seems like a great guy and if you go to class and if you are interested in History you should at least get an AB easily
Professor Kleijwegt was one of the best professors that I've had at Madison so far. His lectures seem dry at first, but he is actually a great lecturer and the course content is very interesting. Your grades only consist of 2 tests, one paper, and participation points. If you get a bad TA, it can be a little bit of a rough semester.
First couple lectures were tough to listen to, cause he just rambled on how much WE (society & historians) don't know due to history. He includes his own opinions in his teachings, so you kind of have to look past that. He seems pretty passionate about what hes teaching. The content is pretty interesting. Exam was pretty easy. Overall = above avg
Take this class. Do not hesitate. It is super easy, almost a joke. However, you will learn a lot. Marc is a great lecturer, and understands his students. A traditional three part midterm, then a 1200 word fake interview, and vague project.
One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Three assignments and no final exam. You can easily get an A without going to lectures or reading the textbook. The only annoying thing was that the discussions were mandatory.
Not a hard course by any means. Wrote one interview and had one exam. He really knows his stuff! He adds some jokes to make the dry subject-matter more interesting. Loves creativity in his students. Don't buy the textbook, you never use it and his final focuses on the lecture material.
This class was soooo boring and soooo easy. I think the class has a lot of non-social science kids in it, so he goes really slow but there's no real map or trajectory to his lectures, so it feels like one long boring drone for 75 mins. Tests are pitifully easy, you don't even really have to do the reading. Take it for the easy A, don't actually go.
Very good lecturer, but very boring. Had him for a power lecture and he stood in front of class and talked the entire time without any aides. Boring and if you zone out for a minute, you usually miss something. Kept it a bit entertaining with jokes. But only a midterm, final, and paper, so fairly easy workload.
lectures are pretty boring. he just lectures with not visual aids and you write most of the time. tests are all written but there's only a midterm, final, and 1 paper. not that hard just not that interesting. ta was really helpful and does all the grading
I went to about half of the lectures and managed to get an AB. The study guides he gives out before the exams tell you EXACTLY what you need to know. A few long readings for discussions which are mandatory.
Lectures are hard to follow and can be very dry. He does cover interesting topics as a whole and is very knowledgeable and entertaining.
He works more on social history, so don't expect much political material. Minimal reading, which he goes over. A little disorganized at times, and I tended to doze off on his repetitive examples. Exams are long, but predictable and straightforward. Go to lecture, scan the readings, and you'll do well in the class.
One of the friendliest, most helpful Professors I've had here. Exams are easy, he designs them this way. Cares about his students and is very approachable. Does not use AV aids, but makes up for it with his ability to tell stories. Material can be a little dry, but if you like history, you will enjoy the course.
This guy is the chinless wonder: tries to play Mr Cool, great at self promotion but less good at promoting his subject. I wasn't very impressed by his classes--repetitive, and not too analytical. Very little reading required, in general too easy.
class was very easy with not much reading or homework and the tests were pretty much just repeating what he says in class. sometimes lecture got really annoying because he would constantly say "we dont actually know" and so it made it seem not worth it to listen to the "history" of the ancient mediterranean
This prof. is great. He is really interesting to listen to, and has a vast amount of knowledge on the subject. He also requires almost no reading and his test aren't that bad, there is no memorizing required. Highly recommended.
His class was very easy, with very little homework, but I always went to lecture just because it was so interesting. Professor Kleijwegt just gets up there and tells you a story every morning. His multiple choice sections suck but it's only a small portion of your test grade. He's much bigger on critical thinking over learning hard facts.
Lectures were interesting and easy to follow; I went though attendence was not required. Not an overly difficult class, was light on the reading as well. He's a pleasant and friendly guy, and really encourages you to think critically if you have him for discussion.
Extremely nice, I have him as a TA for section to and I love him!!
Very easy, never went to lecture. They only give like 5 C's on all the exams. In section the week before the exams the TA's give you everything that will be on the exam to study.
Good class. Found it to be fairly easy. Very light on the reading. Lectures tended to be a bit repetitious, but his accent made it much more bearable.
Love the Dutch accent, makes fun nerdy jokes, very smart, light reading, a good class to take and a good professor.

A very easy, interesting class. The professor is very knowledgeable and the lectures are usually interesting. Exams are generally short essays and are fairly easy.

Lectures are interesting, even if they aren't organized very well. More a culture class than a class on history. Exams are easy and he gives out a light amount of reading. Definetly a good class to take.
Awesome professor! Extremely knowledgable and keeps class interesting. Occasionally boring but overall material is great. Also, got to love the Danish accent!
