Overall, she was very knowledgeable in the material, but lectures were boring as they covered everything the textbook says. Exams were tricky, and study guides did not help (as they did not cover everything that will be on the exam). I thought some exam questions were worded poorly. Not the worst prof ever, but not the best.

Clearly passionate, but lectures are basically textbook summaries. Exams weren't bad but you have to study. NEED to read the book in depth because some exam questions referenced specific details and examples from the book. Fairly boring lectures since they didn't add anything to the textbook info. Not the worst prof I've ever had but still not good

It's clear that she knows the subject matter pretty well but expect to read the textbook from cover to cover (a few questions on the exams will reference the text and other assigned readings). The homework reports are all easy but the exams can require a decent amount of straight memorization. She makes study guides but they don't cover everything

Had exam questions with multiple correct answers, took extremely specific details from the book and turned them into exam questions. Had to read book front to back, lecture was a direct repeat of what was said in the book, and didn't help for exams.

I loved Professor Pflum! She had very interesting lectures and I loved the subject. I could not recommend this class more! Be ready to read a lot and study for the exams, if you do then you will succeed.

Lectures straight out of the textbook and required. TERRIBLY worded exam questions and study guides posted on canvas are pretty much useless. You will never really know what will show up on the exam so you have to just prepare for everything and give it your best shot. Some exam questions aren't even related to the content.

I personally think Clinical Psych should be required for all psych students to take. The class's final project was an application paper for grad school applications. Prof. Pflum was very passionate about the topic, better than other professors I've had at UW. The class was fully online, so all of the lectures and materials were recorded.

I think Professor Pflum means well, but she is not very good at writing test questions. This summer, she wrote multiple choice questions that had 2 answers (not all of the above nor one right) so that was really confusing. She could also do better to be more clear on when deadlines were and put out information in advance.

Very pleasant and knowledge in her field, having personal anecdotes of the material to add in class. Her primary job is as a psychologist so it seems like this one was left on the back burner. Mandatory 8 am lectures taken straight from the textbooks. The exams questions were worded poorly last semester.

She seems to be an okay person, but was a little disorganized (quizzes not unlocked on several occasions). Also be prepared to read a lot to do well on the tests (which are somewhat difficult). Lectures can be boring as she mainly repeats stuff from the readings. She does seem to be very passionate about the subject though.

The study guide has nothing to do with the exam

While passionate about the subject, Pflum just repeats the textbook information during boring, unengaging, mandatory lectures. Study guides for exams are unhelpful, and the exams are very challenging. Topic matter is interesting, but not taught interestingly. Would not recommend it.

Like her passion about her teaching but is VERY textbook-focused and attendance required. Basically need to read all of the chapters in text her taught, and will be still tested on all of content even though she did not finish them on lectures. Study guides provided is not very helpful, exams always have questions that come from nowhere.

Unorganized, unhelpful and unresponsive. Never realizes or acknowledges the wrong info she puts on slides (sometimes major mistakes). Study guides vague and unhelpful. Didn't put up some of the test prep material she promised in the syllabus. One time gave an alternative rubric for an assignment the night before due date.

PSYCH 405: while she is a sweet teacher and knows a lot about the subject I struggled with her class. As someone who read all the text book and prepared well for the exams I could never score higher than 80%. It was frustrating having a test that was so confusing, and seemed to have material from God knows where. Lectures straight from the book.

Passionate about material, came across condescending of students. Professor was disorganized with pre-lecture quizzes often forgetting to unlock them/grade papers. Exams were extremely challenging with questions pulled form picture descriptions in textbook. Unresponsive to emails, even after having seen them. Un empathetic towards attendance.

Pflum is one of the kindest, most open profs I've had at UW. The exams are a bit tough, they go a bit into detail, but she covers mostly everything that will be on the exam during lecture. You COULD get by not reading the textbook, but I'd recommend it as a way of being extra prepared for the exam. Overall, Pflum clearly cares about students.

PSYCH 405---She was very unorganized with opening assigments, getting exam grades back (all MC), and laying out what assignments are due. Her exams are straight from the book (detail heavy), lecture content skips over a lot of exam material, and pre- and post- class quizzes weren't unlocked on Canvas. Read book and must attend lecture for credit.

psych 405: Utterly awful, never hated a professor more in my life. She's condescending, rude, +her lectures repeat the textbook word-for-word. Yes, her exams are hard, that's true, but they seem to include multiple right answers and are TERRIBLY worded--awful for anyone with test anxiety. You will need to memorize the textbook cover to cover.

She's really interesting & I learned a lot during lectures. Yes, you are expected to read a decent amount, but the exams are fair (albeit a bit challenging). the people complaining about her don't understand that you actually have to study to do well in college. If you do the readings, pay attention in class, and review for exams, you will be fine.

There's lots of reading, but the content is very interesting to learn. In addition to some written reports, there's 3 exams that make up a big portion of your grade, but doing well on them is very easy if you just take good notes and review properly. Sometimes lecture can be a bit repetitive and cover basically the same content as the textbook.

There were two midterms and a final. I think like most psych classes, the exam questions were a level above what you learn in class, so definitely study a lot. Pflum has a lot of experience with personality psych, so she was passionate about it and it was really interesting to learn from her.

She was fabulous for accommodations and super sweet. She really cares about the subject and will work with you if you need any help. It is a lot of reading you read the textbook almost cover to cover. However I learned a lot and really enjoyed the class.

Overall, Pflum gets a worse rep than she deserves. This is the second course I've taken from her and honestly she's not too tough. I've had worse teachers. If you have a class with Pflum be sure to take good notes, be attentive, and study for tests well in advance.

I enjoyed Professor Pflum's Psychology of Personality class! Exams are relatively easy as long as you actually read the textbook - it has some super interesting content and a lot of questions come from the text. Overall, I would recommend the class if you're willing to put in the work.

Almost impossible to contact. She only read lectures word-for-word from the book. Exam outlines were not clear whatsoever. Would definitely not recommend to anyone.

Pflum was very relatable and had easy to follow lectures. Details are important though - especially in the tests when there is multiple choice. If you read, study regularly and go to lecture you will be fine. Plus she is very nice and available to talk. I commented as a joke on one of my assignments at 1AM and she responded - very personable.

Spring 2021-2022 She is a good presenter & does well with explaining the material. Gives lots of examples. The material comes from the textbook but I still recommend reading it (because there's some test questions). Class is lecture & test heavy. 2 midterms, 1 cumulative final (but mostly is from last chapter), several short reports that = 1 test.

The lectures were very boring and just repeated the textbook most of the time with no opportunities for discussions on the topics. Exams were tough and with no study guide we were expected to memorize 5 chapters at a time. There were also no other assignments with a lot of points.

Unorganized, reads off slides and does not teach anything. This feels more like a middle school vocabulary class

Despite her impressive knowledge of clinical psychology she doesn't really know how to teach effectively. Her lectures are directly from the textbook and quite dry. Madeline is condescending towards students and doesn't answer questions in class or over email- she just talks for a few minutes about a related topic then moves on.

This was the first psych class I took as a psych major and I thought Prof Pflum did a great job teaching it. I read the textbook before class and used the lecture as a recap kinda. She does kind of read off the slides but I still think I learned a lot from her and this class.

Professor Pflum is alright. She's clearly knowledgeable on Psychology - especially clinical but as a Psychology major her intro to psych class is unnecessarily difficult. If you have the opportunity to get another prof I would try to do that - otherwise study hard and do any and all extra credit for this class - you'll need it.

Professor Pflum is an example of how being nice does not necessarily translate into "good teacher". Her lectures are read word for word off the slides which becomes so monotonous it is hard to focus. You're essentially graded off of exams which go way more in depth than the slides so be ready to read. Just disappointed in what I "learned".

Professor Pflum is a very kind and energetic person, but that is the extent of good things I can say about her class. The exams were much more in-depth than any of her lectures were, there was copious reading, and her lectures were read word-for-word off of her slides. She gave little insight or application of textbook material.

Madeline Pflum is the worst professor I have had at my time at UW. The average on the first exam was an F and she chalked it up to us not understanding the material, not her teaching. She continued this pattern the whole semester to the point where I began teaching myself the material. She was passive aggressive towards students.

Professor Pflum was a great lecturer. She was very clear and easy to understand. Also very approachable. There aren't many assignments, but quite a bit of reading, so be prepared for that.

Was so accomodating as this was the first semester back in person. Very interesting material and the tests are straightforward if you put in some studying.

If you have the opportunity to not take this class with this professor then simply don't. As someone who cares about their grades a lot, this class took a lot of outside time and the tests are impossible to do well on. This class has been dreadful and would not recommend to anyone.

She has been so accommodating with COVID and coming back to school in-person. She has pre-recorded lectures and gives easy small attendance points. Tests are not hard, just watching the lectures and basic review will do!

Class is possible to pass, but please do not expect an A. It is helpful to read but the readings take years because they're almost 100 pages + each. I'm not sure if this professor is the one who makes the tests, but they're impossible to get an 100% on. Even when studying and trying hard, I am struggling to get B due to these horrible exams.

I loved class with professor pflum! She was so accommodating with transitioning back into in-person learning by providing slides and lecture recordings. Her exams were very straightforward if you put in some effort and study, but there are some random questions here and there from textbook material.

There really is no way to succeed well in this class unless you already know psychology very well. She reads off her slides, barely teaches anything, and almost all of the information is from the textbook. You are essentially teaching yourself the entire content of the class through the textbook. Succeeding in this class is virtually impossible.

Although she's a nice person, she is a horrible teacher. 80% of your grade is based on tests, and the average scores are repeatedly F's. She doesn't curve tests or final grades, although the class average accurately reflects her teaching abilities. Be prepared to essentially just teach yourself the entire course if you want any chance of passing.

If you take this class, be prepared to teach yourself. The prof reads from the slides during her lectures, and the book is mostly fluff that does not relate to test material. The average on the first test was a 58% (F) and still was not curved, when, in my opinion, that is a reflection of her teaching abilities.

Exams are hard and there is no curve. The lecture is similar to the book, but there's a few random questions that aren't even touched on in class.

A class in practicing rote memorization. The lectures put you to sleep, the grade distribution is worse than both gen chems', and the exam questions are (imo) poorly written and are often up for interpretation. However, since it's all multiple choice, you can't explain the answer. The prof. is nice, but the course itself is ironically mind-numbing.

Prof. Pflum's lectures weren't always engaging to watch but she's very organized, direct, and reasonable. She was always kind and extremely helpful when I reached out for help. Anyone who says this class was hard just wasn't reading the textbook. The textbook is actually incredibly well written and informative so utilize it.

Prof. Pflum is super nice, but not the best lecturer. She reads directly from the slides word for word, which are word for word from the textbook. I read before class and then was very bored during lecture listening to her repeat everything. She mentioned she has clinical psychology experience and you can tell she knows her stuff though.

Prof. Pflum is very caring and responsive to her students. Her lectures were a bit dry, but it was nice that the information wasn't too difficult. The readings are also quite lengthy, but the lectures follow the readings exactly, so pretty easy to skim. Prof. Pflum was very responsive to the class's needs, and I would definitely take her again.
