I would definitely not take this professor! She messes up homework due dates and problems every homework assignment given. Simple mistakes are a common occurrence and the way she writes n's and m's are impossible to tell apart. If you miss a lecture, good luck on catching up with material. It's not her fault but its hard to understand her accent.
Funny in lecture sometimes but that's about the only upside. Lectures are rather directionless and hard to understand. Claimed the midterm would be “easy to help our grade” only to have a class average of 77. Assigns unnecessarily long webassign homeworks each week.
Don't take, very confusing
Very confusing. Doesnt teach the material. We went over only half the stuff that was going to be on the exam before the exam came. Poor communication. Not structured very well.
Prof. Ifrim is a hilarious lady who makes going to a 75 minute math lecture bearable. She really cares about her students and does many examples of the class is not understanding the content. That being said, the exams are hard, but if the class does collectively bad she gives a pretty generous curve.
Mihaela is a super sweet lady, and she's so genuinely funny in lecture. The class is hard though, but honestly, I expected it. Definitely get a tutor of some kind in the beginning, if you're struggling with material since falling behind is not an option. Exams are brutal, but the curve is generous if everyone does poorly.
Sucks
Initially, the professor was difficult to understand, but after a week it became very easy. She cares an incredible amount and spends tons of time on examples if the class doesn't seem confident. She has been my favorite math teacher I've ever had. The tests can be quite difficult, but that's because of freshmen who haven't taken a hard math class.
TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR! Save your grade and money! She is confusing with a thick accent, she isn't organized at all. (She doesn't even title lectures with the correct topics) Makes mistakes in lectures. AND key detail is that she makes her lectures on the spot with a tablet, and writes in cursive. (Has office hours only one time a week)
Its a difficult class, I wont lie. I took 211 last semester and still have a lot of trouble with the class. That being said, shes a pretty good instructor whos more than willing to help you out if your confused. A tip that I learned from 211: if you have trouble during the lectures, follow along in the textbook (:
VERY DIFFICULT to understand her, she makes a lot of mistakes during lecture. You can tell she is trying her best with her language-barrier, and is actually trying , but she is beyond confusing at times, get a tutor.
Horrible
The tests are hard but don't worry she is generous! Do participate in class, office hours, and Piazza. It really pays off!! My advice is to form study groups as soon as possible because she can be hard to get ahold of at times but she does her best to make up for it. Be patient with her-it is worth it and Mihaela always comes through.
The professor is extremely nice, and the class was a helpful introduction to PDE. Homework was easy and deadlines were very generous. The exams were hard but not out of the ordinary.
She puts in a lot of effort but doesn't have an organised style to teach. Makes too many small errors in the class.
Go to office hours! She is super helpful and willing to break things down and give more examples. I did NOT think her exams were fair, all material other than lectures is made by other profs or the head TA so the reviews were not helpful. Overall a nice lady and is willing to help you succeed if you put in the effort.
this class basically broke me. I can't tell you how many nights I spent crying over my WebAssign. She spends the entire hour and fifteen going over 3-6 really difficult example problems but doesn't really explain what she's doing. Or what the hell is going on. If Mihaela's name shows up on your student center, for the love of god switch classes.
Lectures are all over the place and don't give good examples. There are 6 whiteboards full of sporadic content at any given time. I stopped going to lecture and Patrick JMT became my professor. I guess she expects you to teach yourself? This is hard because she's such a nice person - but absolute not a good teacher. Don't do this to yourself.
Professor Ifrim is hard and will challenge you by making you think about theory as well as the applications of a concept but she is one of the few professors in the UW Madison Math department that cares about actually teaching.
Lectures were way too confusing to understand, she often used an average of 4 chalkboards per problem which would confuse the class about what the original question was about. Lectures rarely mimic the homework and tests. The tests are extremely hard.
Mihaela chooses to take up an entire hour and 15 min with 3-4 very hard and long problems which go much further into detail and make the material more confusing. Our class got so behind because of this we had optional class during the study day and homework after we took our final. Going to Mathlab was the only thing that saved my grade.
I thought her exams were ridiculously hard for what we learned in lecture and in discussion.
Mihaela doesn't really know how to teach math. She's very knowledgeable, but she can't really teach the info. The class material is fairly tough, but Mihaela makes it even harder to understand with confusing lectures and an odd homework schedule. Midterms are pretty hard, be prepared to do a lot of individual work.
I could never follow her lectures so by end of the semester I ended up not even going. She starts out with really hard problems instead of teaching you how to do the problem so she expects you to learn without doing the basic problems. Definitely had to watch a lot of khan academy videos.
Her lectures are all over the place. Hard to keep up and most of the time can't understand the material she teaches
Her lectures aren't very helpful because she doesn't tend to organize her thoughts super well but she is a really nice teacher and gives a pretty good curve on tests. You definitely need to study outside of class/read the textbook in order to really understand the material. Would highly recommend joining Wisconsin Emerging Scholars(WES) for it.
She is very spastic in the way she gives examples in class and often goes far more in depth than is actually required causing things to be more confusing than they need to be. She often uses 4+ chalkboards for one problem and doesn't organize her thoughts very well throughout. However, she is very knowledgeable about what she teaches.
