Did a lot of talking. Readings were not super essential IMO -- and too long. He goes over the most important parts in lecture. What is said in lecture WILL be on the test.

Lucas is a great professor. He is super knowledgable about the the material and I found the lectures to be really interesting. Definitely show up to the lectures because they really help supplement the long readings you are asked to do. Discussion is okay but I think its the TA that makes or breaks it. If you put in the work you'll be fine.

I had 202 with Lucas and took 561 because I liked his eloquence and lecture style. Lectures were based off of the theories proposed in weekly intense readings, and sometimes were incredibly boring (going over the history of paper...). Lucas is eloquent and easy to follow + take notes. Discussion sections were helpful in dissecting readings.

J202 was a breeze with Lucas. He's very clear and knowledgeable, and showed our discussion group that he cared about and acknowledged our hard work throughout our projects. Labs are insufferable (partially due to TA, partially due to 9am) but the pacing kept me on track and content we were taught to produce was really rewarding in the end.

Professor Graves was enthusiastic and knowledgable about the content. The course was VERY reading heavy (one intense reading assigned per lecture) and lectures were spent breaking down readings that were assigned for that day. I was disappointed because none of the ideas felt like his own, just reflections of readings. Ok class, just not my style.

Professor Graves is an absolutely brilliant teacher. He's deeply knowledgable and is extremely encouraging of people who participate. The way he articulates information is very useful and makes it easy to take detailed notes. I didn't initially care about the topic, but left loving it because of his demeanor and support. You will learn a ton!

While we didn't get a lot of interaction with Professor Graves in the online format, the pre-recorded lectures once a week were informative and helpful in understanding course content. LOTS of deadlines, assignments, etc. to keep track of, but Canvas is kept up to date very well. Projects/assignments are realistic in prepping for real-world work.

The only interaction we got with him from our 6 credit class was a 20 ish minute lecture he uploaded on Monday. He made class overly complicated, was not present and did not have J202 organized to work online until halfway through the semester. Unfortunately, he seemed nice with what little we heard from him, but I just didn't hear much from him.

Graves has two problems: lack of organization and disrespect. He verbally gave assignments that weren't listed in the syllabus and never used Canvas for grades. He also tends to go on tangents which detracts from the main content of lectures. I found essays very difficult to write because of this. Also, the amount of reading is absurd.

Just the absolute driest lecturer Ive ever experienced. This is a majors only class and yet somehow he makes it so unenjoyable. Additionally, he refuses to use canvas so you have no clue where your grade stands until the class is over. He cold calls too. Two blue book exams and a final paper that is 6-8 pages too. Avoid him

Professor Graves is an awesome lecturer. At the beginning of the semester I was intimidated by the amount of reading per week, but you get used to it and he does a great job explaining them in lecture. Lecture is mandatory, but it's fun and interesting 90% of the time. Midterm and final are blue book exams. I would recommend this course!

Professor Graves is fantastic, and if you're in SJMC at Wisconsin you should take a class with him at some point. This class did have a lot of reading but Graves knows how to lead a discussion and I never felt bored in the power lectures. I don't know if it'll be offered again but Democracy Technology and the News is a great class.

Graves is very easy to follow if you've read the articles before class. His lectures are hard to follow if you don't read/haven't taken a similar course. Tip: take note of the page numbers and definitions of words during lecture.

Prof Graves is very clear and concise and cares a lot about the course. Really well-organized. To really appreciate this class, READ the articles for If you liked J201, you'll love this class. It's a historical approach to theories of American journalism and mass communications. Take reading notes along the way for your final papers and exams.
