Not the most exciting class but she does her best to have class engagement. Not a ton of work and pretty easy. Only 2 tests and they aren't cumulative. Participation is self-graded but she notices if you participate or not. I have nothing bad to say but nothing that amazing to say about her either. I definitely recommend for an easy com elective!

Course content is well organized but extremely boring and dry. Class can also fall flat due to the lack of engaging materials that does not spur any meaningful discussion. She is not accessible in or outside of class and can be demeaning at times too. I would not recommend taking another class with her.

Prof. Lopez really enjoys what she teaches which is very clear but I hated lectures with her. It was basically a repeat of discussions and I hardly paid attention (but had to go bc attendance is mandatory) because she didn't lecture much anyway.

This class was interesting and fun, but a lot of work. Prof Lopez is very knowledgeable on the subject and is very nice. There's a lot of readings which is annoying, but just make sure you do your work and you'll be fine.

Knows the material and the course is interesting, but she does little in terms of original interpretation. The discussion largely stopped where the author of any given text left it at. It's more about reading and being able to regurgitate that back to her rather than taking the material a step further. Decent class if you're okay with that

She sticks to a strict script which makes it really hard for her lectures to be engaging. She has too many words on each slide and doesn't post any of them online, so if you are slow at taking notes, you are doomed.

I really enjoyed the structure of Dr. Lopez's class. It was always very clear what needed to be completed each week, and I never felt overwhelmed by the work load. There were only 2 five-page papers, which I felt was very doable for a Com Arts class. Some of the material did get a little repetitive, but if complete the assignments it's an easy A.

Dr. Lopez is an amazing Professor. She makes her lecture super funny and understandable. There are weekly readings and quizzes, but you just have to push through. A lot of the readings are super interesting! The papers are doable just as long as you pay attention during the lecture. The notes are not online, only the key concepts. Great class!

This class is very mediocre. Take this class if you want a semi interesting class and an easy A. The lectures are pretty boring, but you do not need to attend them. Just go to discussion and participate and you will get an A! Some pretty interesting chapters at some points and the papers are not bad at all.

The class is interesting but fairly elementary for a college course. Professor Lopez does not seem to respect students lives outside of the class, and I have personally experienced this. Fair warning - if you have any sort of personal conflict that isnt directly related to class, she will not care.

One of my favorite professors. I've taken multiple classes with her and loved every one. The bottom line and why people don't like her is her classes are very multi-dimensional, political, and writing heavy. If you don't like writing and you aren't interested in social politics, you won't like her.

She is a good professor and often uses some clear examples to make some complicated terms more easily for students to understand. Also, the grades on papers are not tough enough. You would get good grades on your papers if you carefully follow the instructions.

Honestly the worst professor I've had at UW. The content was excruciatingly elementary, but everything was graded harshly to validate the course. This course could have been taught in two lectures. Spent more time preaching her views on social justice than the course content. She was disrespectful to students in lecture as well as in office hours.

Lectures are pretty boring. Honestly, got more out of the discussions than the lecture. Lopez doesn't post powerpoint slides and goes through them fast, so writing your notes is relatively impossible. Very writing intensive class. Didn't mind the papers, but tests are very centered around the readings which there are about 3 for each lecture.

Lori is a decent professor and she knows her stuff, but I think I had one of the worst TAs on campus. I don't really think he cared whether I failed or passed, just wanted to get his discussion done with. There's a ton of readings. Papers were based 90% off of readings, 10% off of lecture.

Steer clear of ComArts 250. Content-wise it is extremely repetitive and bland. The same topic are introduced under different names and Lori always attempts to unsuccessfully weave race into each. It's not so much the professor as it is the content of the class. Blow your brains out boring.

I loved Professor Lopez! So sweet, great lecturer. Her examples were relevant and kept your attention. My TA was great and everyone involved in the class was friendly and passionate. The paper prompts are tough to work through but thought-provoking. The tests were fair (most of the questions were short answer). Great class, great professor!

This class completely changed how I think about the world, and Professor Lopez was a big reason why. She had thoughtful, meaningful lectures and was available to help whenever it was needed. Unfortunately I didn't have a great TA for this class, but lecture was enough to understand and get a good grade. FYI THIS CLASS IS VERY WRITING HEAVY!

This class isn't very hard or meaningful. Lectures are barely related to the readings and are pretty bland. Professor Lopez is very nice and helpful if you go to office hours, but she posts "cheat sheets" online to go along with lecture that don't help much at all. Also, she doesn't put writing on her power points, making it hard to take notes.

The class is confusing. Does not upload her powerpoint slides, but puts a list of terms together for the students to take notes on. It's harder to effectively recall lecture without the slides because she has all the media examples on the slides (photos, title,) which are not accessible when students need. Her speaking style can be rude at times.

The readings aren't necessary if you go to lecture, and Professor Lopez is funny and young and probably the nicest professor I've ever had.

The class isn't good. You will not "take a lot away" from this class; I have no idea what people are talking about. Her lectures are boring, her lectures are pointless, trivial readings are forced into relevance... If you need this class for Comm Arts, take it. Otherwise, pass on it. It's easy, but boring and useless.

As other reviewers noted, Dr Lopez tended to use the same few key ideas multiple times under multiple names. Most of what you learn is common sense. The readings are almost useless, but you have to read them since material from them will be on the exam. My expectations for this class were drastically different from how this class actually was.

A decent enough professor. But the lectures aren't thought provoking, and the same half dozen terms get recycled over the semester masked as new words. Also CA250 isn't a media class as much as a gender studies class. Literally everything discussed turns into talking about minorities. It's not bad, it's just not in congruence with the description.

Worst professor. The class covered common sense issues and she repeated the same topics over and over again, but called them different names. Lots of whining about racism.

Great class. Content was very interesting and Dr. Lopez was a great lecturer. Attendance in lecture is not required but a majority of what you'll be tested on is covered. attendance in discussion is. Course assignments consist of 4 essays plus a midterm and final exam. I really enjoyed learning in this class.

Professor Lopez's lectures were interesting and incredibly thought-provoking! On any given day we'd be talking about Miley Cyrus's performance at the VMA's or Cher's twitter account. Even if CA isn't your intended major, you'll take a lot away from this class. Do the readings, attend lectures, and you'll do great. This is a writing intensive course

This class has some of the most interesting and thought-provoking lectures, and it's all thanks to Professor Lopez! Keep up with the readings and attend most lectures and discussions (which you'll want to anyways) and you'll be fine!

Lori and this class are awesome, easy ethnic studies requirement and not that much work. just two 3 page papers and two blue book exams. The readings are useless and not required. class was also very interesting and "fun".

This class was interesting but not very challenging. Prof Lopez is super charming and great about encouraging discussion, but that ultimately meant that she did very little lecturing and I therefore didn't learn that much. A lot of reading, but because there are no in-class exams and just one paper, you can totally get away with not doing it.

I love Lori! Yes, she's going to challenge a lot of things that you have believed about race your whole life -- isn't that what college is for? This class was very engaging, the readings were interesting, and Lori is kind, intelligent, and encouraging of her students.

Lori is so nice and really loves interacting with students. She knows the subject matter really well, but the class is easy. It really depends on the work you want to put into it. If you want to be engaged she makes it fun and awesome. if you want to coast you can get away with that too.
