Wandel is an amazing professor, she teaches her class through storytelling and it is so memorizing. Everything is graded by your TA, so you will not know your grade until the end. Be sure to go to the lecture to get all of the material you need, and do the work for discussion as it always comes up on the exams.
Professor Wandel is the worst professor ever. Her tests cover anything from lectures yet the way she goes about lecture is awful. She is insanely rude to students taking her class and flames them for not speaking up to answer questions. She goes on unnecessary rants about random topics that have no correlation to the slides. DONT TAKE HER CLASSES!
Prof. Wandel was an amazing professor in all aspects; homework assignments were light, lectures were interesting, and promoted a positive environment. Take advantage of the opportunities she gives to redo assignments, as you can do this as much as you want until full credit. Readings are heavy and long, but are always gone over in discussion.
Her first assignment, a syllabus summary, was brutal. However, she allows you do redo assignments an unlimited number of times to get full credit. Definitely take advantage of this. The class overall was very interesting, and the discussions prepare you for the exams, which I felt was easy. My TA was a jerk, who graded way too hard.
I really enjoyed Prof Wandel and her class. It was pretty easy to get an A in the class since the Prof/TA determined your grade "holistically". Basically if you put effort into the discussion/weekly writings you'll be fine. Yes, there's a ton of reading but you just need to know the texts' big ideas. I generally didn't read the entire texts.
Professor Wandel is very passionate about the subject, but learns everyone's name quickly. SO much reading in this class, sometimes a novel each week. Overall was an easy class and interesting. She loves her history though, got to give it to her.
Professor Wandel is super passionate about this class and it shows. However, its super readings heavy and very conceptual instead of analytical, which as a STEM major was difficult to wrap my head around. My TA saved me and my classmates. Also, never skip lectures because even with the slides uploaded, you will definitely not get the main point.
Great lectures, she's very passionate and knowledgeable. I love her course, instead of focusiing on dates or timelines it's organized by subject. One lecture is about medieval thoughts of the human body, the next on the 100 years war. Every lecture was interesting and I stayed awake, despite having to wake up at 7AM. Don't take if you hate reading.
Professor Wandel is a nice lady and seems to care about her students. However, her grading system is incredibly unclear and I had no idea what my grade would be until final grades were posted. The midterm and final both involve essays similar to AP tests in high school. I would avoid this class if possible unless you're really into history.
Incredibly unclear grading expectations. There was less than 15 minutes dedicated for discussion and, to get better than a BC in 25% of your grade you had to talk every class, fighting to amidst 40. Readings were awful, very few grades and unrealistic expectations. Gets distracted easily during lecture by things like dropping a pencil
Professor Wandel's expectations were unclear and she required that all 40 students participate in the last 15 minutes of class which was impossible. She spoke as if everyone was raised Christian and some things were common knowledge, which they were not. Prior to this I had a 4.0 but not anymore. If you like your GPA, do not take this class.
Prof Wandel was a great teacher and clearly passionate about the curriculum. She really gets to know her students too. There is a lot of outside reading for the class, but the most important thing is to attend lectures and participate in discussion. The work isnt too bad and if you take the time to do it youll absolutely get an A.
Dr. Wandel is pretty interesting and takes time to get to know each student, but her grading system is wack. She uses checks and check +s to grade the assignments. There are a lot of readings, some are interesting and some are horribly boring. I would not recommend taking this class unless you are an avid history lover or history major.
Dr. Wandel is a great lecturer! I loved having her for 119 this semester. Shes very knowledgeable about what she teaches and does a good job of getting to know all of her students. Theres lots of reading but the TA and the professor are great at clearing up any confusion.
Prof was great, interesting lectures and readings, though there are a lot. The TA was pretty bad but what should I have expected.
avoid her if you can, she is over tedious, her TA is lovely though
There is a lot of dry reading from primary sources. Don't buy the main textbook though. I did not need it. The course is pretty broad, but Prof Wandel has some interesting lectures. Also, you have to watch movies outside of class at night, 3 times a semester.
She is very passionate about the content she teaches which makes it interesting to most students, but her focus in class is unique and tends to leave me confused on other parts of the era.
Professor Wandel is amazing! She cares deeply about her students and is a fair grader and lecturer. Readings are required in order to succeed. The one difficulty I found was building a professional relationship with her that extended more academically. Regardless, I would highly recommend her to all students in the future! She is great.
Great lecture, really inspirational. She covered the topic in lectures that combined several historical events into one major point, this helps you link the historical facts together. Tons of readings are required. But they do help you form a understanding. Love the Persian Letters.
LOVE HER! lectures are my favorite. tests are in class essays
Prof Wandel is a great professor, and I would recommend taking her class if you want to get a side of history you probably won't get in the history books. She encourages discussion and questioning her methods. She assigns several long readings of 200+ pages, but they aren't necessary to read if you dont want. Midterm and final are essay tests.
This was the first history class I took in college and I loved it so much I decided to major in history! There is a text book that goes with the class but it is completely unnecessary as long as you attend lectures. There are no papers, and only a written midterm and final. Was a passionate and energetic lecturer! Monica Ledesma as a ta rocked, too
Dr. Wandel is an incredible professor whose lectures are engaging. She has a great sense of humor and is very approachable. You must read all of the assigned readings in order to succeed in the class, and while some are very dull, they are crucial to understanding the time period. Bottom line, she is absolutely awesome and I recommend her courses.
Her lectures often end eary because she runs out of ways to repeat her personal opinion about history. The class is a grade booster but painfully boring.
Lee is the reason I am a history major. Very inspirational, doesn't care about the grade just cares that you are learning and have an interest. She breaks down boundaries of the class room by developing a community through participation. She provides insight into different perspectives by linking history to current day events and beliefs.
A decent amount of reading that you really have to do. Not too difficult of a class, but you will need to go to lecture. I really liked Wandel, she just talks a little too quietly sometimes. She was very passionate and knowledgable. I never dreaded going to class, she was good at keeping it from getting too dry. Didn't open the textbook, don't buy.
Wandel knows the material very well, and approaches it with humor. Readings are dense but absolutely necessary to understand the class and the discussions. You don't need the 119 textbook, only the primary source books. My only real criticism is that her voice gets very soft when she's saying something important, when you need to hear it most.
Decent history class. Readings every week and a few movies through the semester. Very sweet woman. Going to class everyday helps bc she knows everyone by name. Grading pretty generous. Got a BC on the midterm but ended up with an AB in the class. Having a TA that is knowledgable is also beneficial.
Dr. Wandel gives great lectures and lays out her grading practices very clearly. She is tough but fair. Do not skip her lectures or you will miss most of the information that she tests. Reading the ppt slides is not enough. Her TA is great and the discussions are essential for learning the material. Definitely recommended.
Professor Wandel kept lectures interesting. You will learn quickly how much she dislikes the cold weather. Discussions are very helpful. Go to them!
Wandel is so opinionated it completely distracts from what she is teaching. STAY AWAY!
I studied abroad in London and Lee was our professor/advisor. She makes class interesting and tries to engage all the students in discussion. She also has a ton of awesome stories to tell. I definitely would recommend taking a class with her!
Very interesting class/professor. She walks around and keeps everyone engaged. You don't have to go to the 'required' movies, just watch on netflix. My friend got a D on the first test (of 2) but ended up with an AB- she looks for improvement when grading, and there is no curve. Very easy if you pay attention.
Prof. Wandel...well, her visual evidence is cool. But she has clearly set out not to teach us history, but her personal, biased opinion of it. The readings were unhelpful (in one case, literally not even pertinent), and on occasion random assignments of no value to the course (I.E., factfinding) were given. Too emotional, not grounded. Simply "no".
Professor Wandel was fantastic for this course! She studied this period, so she knew what she was talking about and was very passionate about the material. She makes each lecture interesting, but the textbook is rarely used. There is a fair amount of reading, though.
Professer Wandel is clearly passionate about her work, however sometimes she goes off on tangents in class and starts talking about random things. It seems like she does a lot of unnecessary talking. It is a pretty easy class to do well in if you do the work.
This class may be easy but this teacher is horrible. She is not accommodating and will not listen to an opinion other than her own. This arragance shows in her lectures and in the way she talks with students. The TA's will help you out with dealing with her but ultimately agree that she is difficult. She over reacts about little stupid things.
A seminar with Professor Wandel is a great learning experience and I would recommend it to anyone. She is very interested in the process of writing a long historical research paper, which is a ton of work, but totally worth it. Wandel makes a point to build community in her classes and I looked forward to it each week. She is a lovely person.
This class was extremely easy, but the professor made it painful to experience. She constantly has power trips in lecture and frankly is really too opinionated for her own good. She jumps around and has a hard time sticking to her lecture topic. Your TA will have to save you because Wandel grades extremely hard when she had your papers.
Wandel is amazing! She is one of the most well-spoken and knowledgeable people I've ever met, and her lectures were incredible, even at 8 AM. The textbook was expensive and unnecessary and there was a lot of emphasis on philosophy, but overall this class is excellent. Jim Coons is the best TA!
If you're looking for an easy class and somewhere to get higher than a B without much effort, this is your professor. She is very opinionated and I felt like her lectures were politically charged. She is nice and easy to understand, but I finished the class feeling like I hadn't learned much other than really, really broad generalizations.
I loved this class! Prof. Wandel is so knowledgeable and passionate about the subject of European history and she really was effective at keeping me awake at her 8am lectures. I skimmed most of the required novels and have done well on all my response papers - get Jim Coons as your TA he is AMAZING!!
Dr. Wandel is a great professor. She lectures very dramatically to keep you awake at an 8 AM power lecture and sometimes will bring in candy. We also have been let out early a few times so far this semester. If you go to class/discussion and pay attention it should be an solid B. An A is definately possible with effort.
I absolutely loved Dr. Wandel. she's very passionate about the subject and makes you want to be too. even though it was a large lecture, she called on many students by name and even brought us candy once or twice. the class is easy, but only if you go to lecture and take good notes.
LP Dubs was one of the best professors or teacher I've had in my life. Her lectures, though at 8am were always engaging and the reading assigned always pertained to the lectures. Overall a difficult class based on curriculum but if you went, listened, and read an AB was easy!
I took her for Hist200: Witches & Saints & it was one of my favorite classes I've taken here. The class is very much based on independent study/research so you can really focus on what interests you. The workload isn't extreme & she is very knowledgeable/helpful if you have any problems. She's an incredible professor.
Take this class, Dr. Wandel is a phenomenal lecturer and made getting out of bed at 730 in the morning worth it. Discussion is required, and you'll want to go because the TAs basically break the readings down for you. B with little effort, A with some. Take it.
the class wasn't easy, but her lectures were well-organized with slides and outlines. she was obviously passionate about history and very personable. in a pretty big lecture she was able to call on most students by name. exams are half essay, half ID. they're not easy, but they're fair -- no surprises or tricks.
Great professor!! Very good lecturer, one of the best I've had at Madison :) Take it in the summer!
Wandel is great! She is the most prepared, professional lecturer I have ever had. Each day of class was a totally new experience - she presented the material in unconventional ways, and was very engaging. Sometimes she goes fast, and there's a lot of notes, so you have to be awake. But she made lecturing an art, and for that she get's an A+.
TAKE CLASS IN SUMMER!! you only have to read 6 books instead of 19! during the summer there is a midterm and final, plus really easy 50 word write ups after each book you read and they are only to say your opinion. i can see why she would be confusing to some but i didn't think it was that bad. it was easy to get an A.
Very cheerful and compassionate about what she teaches. Lectures are interesting and books that are required to read are not too bad. Exams are fair as long as you take notes, listen in class, and read. She is very willing to answer any questions you have too. Overall, class was enjoyable.
I love Prof Wandel, she is obviously really interested in the subject and is completely willing to work with you if you have any problems. Class isn't too hard, notes are all on an outline, tests are fine.
LPW was Amazing! I loved this class so much. It was my favorite class so far. She is interesting, brilliant, energetic, hilarious, fair, and loves teaching.
Energetic and exciting. Lectures are really interesting but make sure to ice your hand afterwards (lots of writing). Readings are enjoyable. Sometimes unclear on expectations for papers and exams. Good way to fulfill humanities req.
Wandel is the most interesting professor and best lecturer I've had so far. She makes the subject really interesting and has a good sense of humor. A lot of reading for this class, but most of it is interesting. The TAs have pretty high expectations, but if you do the work and go for help when you need it, you'll do well.
She is a great great professor! Although I didn't need the help, I knew that if I did, she would do a lot for her students. She relates well and uses hilarious analogies throughout lecture. Papers not too hard, but really depends on the TA.
LPW is utterly amazing. She enages the class with her hilarious analogies, rockstar side jokes and inviting persona. Most of all she knows her stuff so she actually lectures instead of reading her slides. Her classes are a must!
LPW is pretty much awesome. She is fantastic, hilarious, and it really should be required that everyone take her class.
Very passionate. No final exam, just a final paper. Her lectures were very interesting, but not mandatory and not necessary for writing the papers. She always made sure we knew she was available during her office hours.
Easily my favorite prof at wisconsin--and I have had many great profs. I wish she taught more classes so I could take them all.
She knows a ton about history and gives good lectures. lot of reading from books but i didnt really read them. just listen in discussion. no textbook
All you do for this class is write some papers regarding the readings which are usually very interesting. She is VERY passionate about what she teaches which makes it refreshing to go to lecture. I would highly recommend her, especially if you are a science major needing a comm b!
anyone who says she's a hard grader is a complete idiot. sorry, but they are. she gives the exam essay questions IN ADVANCE. she talks about her son a lot which just makes her seem even more very human and approachable. good class
i adore prof wandel. she is compassionate and endearing in a way few profs are. her lectures are meaningful and she focuses on helping her students understand, not merely memorize.
she is an amazing professor...knows an amazing amount of information, very impressive. tests arent bad- half id and half essay. i would definitely recommend!
I cannot imagine why people wouldn't want to attend lectures for her classes. She is profoundly knowledgeable and a genuinely nice woman. If you aren't interested in the more abstract history and beliefs of religious traditions, perhaps you will be bored. But take her classes, especially the religious studies ones.
There are no midterms and the papers don't really correspond to lectures, so lectures are pointless. But you have to go because she takes attendance sometimes. She seems to know a lot on the subject and is happy to answer questions, but sometimes I have no idea what she is talking about
Overall, a pretty good professor. Since she just lectures from notes, she sometimes ends up not making a whole lot of sense. Her lectures are still interesting, though, if your like the subject. From my experience she is helpful and is happy to answer questions; she gets to know the kids by name.
She's a really boring lecturer. Puts me to sleep. And her lectures don't correspond with what the papers are on, so in essence, you can skip lecture all the time. The readings and disc. can be semi-interesting though.
Rude to students.
Profesor Wandel reminded me of my high school history teacher. If you enjoy a good history class, this is your class. This class is pretty easy if you just go to lecture, write good papers, and actually TALK in discussion. Minimal effort for an A or AB. Her jokes ARE pretty funny if you're awake
Good class, good teacher, don't come tired. Good class for Humanities requirement
Shes kind of a hardass but its ok, shes a good speaker and the class is usually interesting. Sometimes it is difficult to tie into the readings but its possible. The tests arent bad but the lectures can be pooring as sin. I have fallen asleep way too many times
Always sit up front, she tends to change her volume or turn around so that you can't hear 3 rows back. Otherwise her class was unremarkable, if you're going to take it, get a fun TA
She is an extremely nice lady and very knowledgable. Her lectures, however, can be a little hard to follow and can at times be difficult to connect to the readings. Exams are overarching essay questions which are generally easy to do well on. Overall, a good class.
lee tends to ramble. she should really get a lapel mic because she seems to mutter a lot. i usually play games on my phone the last half of class. the readings aren't too bad, but i seriously went to the poorhouse with all the books she had us buy. however, tests are easy and she's helpful.
lectures are boring...doesn't always seem like she is going anywhere with them. sometimes have a hard time connecting readings with lectures
Lots of reading with 19 books. Sometimes the books are a little boring, but the lectures are suprisingly interesting.
