For a basic intro class, she made it very easy. Not sure why everyone cares that the lectures were dull. It was a very easy A. Show up, put in airpods, and do the homework that is due the next class or work on one of the papers. Never had work outside of class by doing this. YOU DO NOT NEED TO TAKE NOTES OR PAY ATTENTION DURING LECTURE. very easy A

Prof Horowitz's lectures were super repetitive and showed tons of videos. Long, sometimes unnecessary readings twice a week. Sometimes said questionable things about Indigenous peoples/did not support as much as a AIIS prof should.

Lectures were dull and repetitive as others have said. However, she does seem to try and make things more interesting, and is willing to answer questions. I believe dr. Horowitz is more interested in punishing students for cheating and absence than in the topic of this class as she puts far more effort into the former.

This professor is so boring and does not make me interested in the content of this class at all. She assigns 8 discussion questions that you have to skim through 80 pages to find the answers to, and most of your big grades are essays, puts a word limit then takes points off when your descriptions are broad because you used up the whole word count.

Lectures are extremely dull and repetitive, she seems like she's just not interested in what she's teaching. Extremely extensive papers that she doesn't even go over, two discussion notes due weekly with heavy reading, and pointless pop quizzes.

Was not at all caring or flexible when I was hospitalized halfway through the semester. She was rude and dismissive, was the only professor who asked me for documents and I had to send her multiple different documents. Only received a one-day extension until I informed her that completing the project would be impossible in that time.

Dr. Horowitz is very passionate about her research. The lectures are incredibly repetitive and dull and the organization of the class is very poor. I took this course as the course summary seemed incredibly interesting to me, but I was mistaken. If you're taking this course for ethnic studies like I was, choose a different one.

Professor Horowitz really seems like she cares about her students, and takes time at the end of lecture to take questions. However, her lectures are very repetitive and the content of the class is as well. Two research papers worth 60% of grade, with participation in discussion worth 20% and twice weekly discussion notes worth 20%.

Probably the worst professor I've had here. I stopped going to lectures after a week because she clearly only cared about her research and the policy aspects not the Indigenous communities we were discussing. Discussion was great, loved my TA.

Decent course. I felt more connected to my TAs than to the professor, but the material is interesting (but depressing!) Took this for my legal studies major & there's not a ton of legal content, but it's great if you're into environmental activism. The weekly exercises are fine & there's a written exam and a 2000 word final paper.

This class is a great class to learn about Indigenous groups, but there was definitely a focus on economics and policy that I found hard to engage with. Professor Horowitz is knowledgable, but lectures weren't always super interesting. There are two mandatory readings a week with assigned questions and two 1500 word midterm essays.

Biggest grade points are two projects that together account for 80% of your grade. Lectures are enjoyable and available recorded, on zoom, and live-streamed.

Very long, dull research papers to read but discussion notes were a good portion of grade (which is nice). You really should participate once a discussion which, for those who are very shy, I would think it could be tough to get an A. Lectures were so boring to me, minimal notes available. LOVED my TA.

This class was informational, but not as much as anticipated. Lots of really cool readings but the jargon-heavy research papers are tough to plow through. Spent more time than necessary on her research in New Caledonia. If you're good at writing and keep up with readings, it's an easy class.

I came to this class with such high expectations and was disappointed with this class and how it was taught. I'm especially disappointed with the honors section (taught by Dr. Horowitz), where discussion was unorganized and it seemed like she always called on favorites. She also graded papers harshly but gave vague critique on the outline.

Her lectures were enjoyable, but not mandatory to attend. She records lectures and posts them to canvas. There are two weekly readings and discussion is mandatory. There was one midterm and a final paper. I would recommend the class. If you keep up with the weekly assignments and study a bit for the midterm it should be an easy A!

Professor Horowitz is very informed, and the class wasn't too much work. It was all based on discussion readings, discussion participation, a sentence outline, and a final paper. Overall, the content was very interesting and it was a doable class.

Excellent professor. Clear she's invested in the material. Lectures aren't mandatory but I recommend them nonetheless, they're very interesting. I had my discussions with her, and she's really receptive and great. Take the honors discussion if you can. No tests, just final essay and lots of mandatory weekly reading (but its usually interesting).

I really enjoyed Dr. Horowitz's lectures, but you really don't have to go unless you're passionate about the lecture topic and want to write your final paper on it. The lectures are posted online and the only assignments are weekly readings on Canvas. Participation in section is mandatory but otherwise, you don't even have to show up to get an A.

I really enjoyed climate change governance. Prof Horowitz is a good lecturer and the material is policy and action based. Lectures are recorded each week and slides are posted. There is one midterm, one group presentation and one final paper. Graded fairly. Discussion participation is graded. Would highly recommend this class!
