Avoid at all costs. Had her for ATM OCN 522 this semester and it was the most incoherent class I've taken in my five years here. The grading is extremely inconsistent, her lectures are rambly and her answers to questions only left me more confused. Also means office hours didn't help much. She's a great person, but teaching ain't for her.
This Professor has no idea what she is doing, doesn't review topics that she teaches, and has no idea how to answer questions you ask in class.
Larissa is a wonderful person, but a terrible teacher. Her expectations are so often unclear that it makes it seem like she has no idea what's going on. Her grading is inconsistent and it makes it really hard for students. Once again, I like Larissa as a human, but not as a professor.
Despite being switched out of teaching the core courses at Madison (310/311), her teaching style has not changed from any of the other comments. She is dumbfounded that you cannot learn from her poor teaching, unavailable even at designated office hours, and only handed back one graded assignment the entire semester so final grades were a toss up.
WORST. PROFESSOR. EVER! Professor Back, should go back to school to learn how to teach. I cannot believe the AOS faculty have assigned someone so irresponsible to the undergraduate core curriculum as Dr. Back. She may very well understand the concepts, but she fails to teach to those it may not come easy. Repeating the same example, does not help.
She really tries to help with understanding of material during lecture, but sometimes the best way to learn was to teach yourself from the book and internet. Very clear on what will be on tests.
She was insulting to students who didn't understand concepts and was often unable to explain in any detail what she was teaching. Hopefully her research contributions make up for her jaded treatment of students and inability to teach.
I love professor Back! She goes over tons of examples in lecture and really makes the class so easy. She really changed a lot from last year, so I think she takes all of the critiques to heart. All derivations are really clear and she tries to make lecture funny. Definitely inspired me to continue in meteorology.
Allowing Professor Back to teach one of the core sequences to the major is irresponsible. She is relatively new to her position since she just got her PhD within recent years yet is unable to help undergrads learn nor, admittedly, cares. Her presentations are often stumbled through in a similar manner you might expect from an undergrad.
Not much to say besides the WORST teacher EVER. Any random person off the street would be just as effective as her if they spent 1 hour a week learning the material on google or via the textbook. She expects you to know much much more, however. In short, atrocious does not come close to describing her. Sad thing is that she is the only teacher.
Prof. Back prepares for class by using other's power points and wikipedia. Don't go to office hours because she won't be there and if she is she will just say "I'm not sure how you're not understanding". Good luck it's a rough year to say the least!
Worst professor I've ever had to deal with. She is not available for office hours, takes over a month to grade exams for 13 people, uses slideshows she finds on google to teach lectures that she doesn't prepare for, and is clearly more fascinated in her research that teaching hopeful AOS majors. She is a disappointment to UW-Madison and AOS.
She takes over a MONTH to hand back midterms for a class of 12 and steals lecture content from other professors at other universities and is unable to explain what exactly she is supposed to teach. They must give PhDs to anyone these days...
Worst professor EVER. She doesn't care about the class at all, doesn't make herself available outside of class, and is impatient when you ask her questions. She takes forever to hand homework/tests back but has ridiculously high standards for the class nonetheless. She rambles through lectures and I end up leaving more confused than before class.
