The professor just genuinely doesn't care about his students, will degrade them if he feels like it. Besides his horrible attitude, he sucks at lectures, makes everything too convoluted for no reason, and gives very little time to do in class TopHat so be ready to lose points because of that
I took Dr. Feigl's quantitative methods in geoscience course. It primarily focused on the use of MATLAB. I went in with no experience of coding of any kind and I came out with a good grasp of the basics. Its definitely one of the more useful classes I have taken. Dr. Feigl was always helpful with answering questions and helping me understand.
Not even worth to give 1 star. The WORST CLASS that I've taken in my undergraduate. Preparing doesn't make any better. Stay away if you are trying to boost up your grades. Attended every lecture, studied at least 15-20 hrs per week, I usually get A or A- BUT GOT A 'C'.
Cares almost zero about students. By far the worst professor I have ever taken a class with. You don't know what will come in the exam, he is not clear about syllabus and denies answering that question if asked. Class incident: A girl once faced technical issue and she asked for help he literally muted her on zoom and shut her up!. very rude.
I don't think he rocked my world. Lectures just feel mediocore and boring. After a few sections I just stopped taking notes and mostly relied upon the slides he provides right before class. 118 is pretty much the definition of a 1 credit filler course.
This was probably the most boring class I have ever taken. Prof Feigl's lectures were so unorganized and hard to follow that I rarely took notes. The tests are difficult but generously curved. Only take this class if you absolutely have to.
Pretty boring class, and tests were a bit difficult, but other than that its pretty easy. Both professors were fine, kinda boring, but lectures aren't that important if you read the textbook. p.s. you can do the tophats from home!
He is awful. He is like a bad high school science teacher from a movie, but unfortunately, its real life. He doesnt know how to teach and then doesnt give study guides or good lecture slides when its test time. Awful.
Because he is so passionate about what he's talking about, he tends to go into unnecessary detail for this level. That makes it a little hard to listen to because you know you won't need to remember any of these specific details. However, as long as you read, turn in the worksheets, and take decent notes, you can easily get an A in this class.
Most boring professor. Lectures are so long and are filled with random pictures! Only went to answer tophat questions and gave up on taking notes in class cause there was so much useless info on the slides. Tophat Qs are hard and had to look almost 95% of the question up and he gave almost no time to answer them. Used textbook once and test HARD!
The discussion assignments in this class are usually really easy, and the in-class TopHat questions range from really easy to nearly impossible. My main issue with this class is that there's no study guides or practice tests for either the mid-term or the final. They're really hard to prepare for because of this.
Very cool dude, knows what he is talking about and has experience in the real world with what he is teaching. His lectures can be a little long but you do learn a fair amount. Top Hat questions can get hard, but if you go to lecture you get half credit which still seems better than nothing.
kurt is a very intelligent professor in the topic of geology, but it almost seems as if he knows the topic to well and over simplifies complex topics into one slide. he asks some absurd top hat questions that are for a decent amount of the grade. the lectures go so fast and are so hard to take notes on that the lectures arent worth going to.
Going to this class was a total waste of time. I only went for the top hat questions which were super hard for no reason. Feigl was not a good prof AT ALL. He made the power points, which were already unclear, very confusing. So hard to take notes. The exams were very hard. There were questions on things we didn't talk about. Would not recommend!
Terrible class. Do not take
Through the second lecture I still have yet to have any idea what he is talking about. I would rather put my hand in a fire than sit through one of this guy's lectures.
Kurt's lectures are quite boring as he speaks in a monotone voice. The material is easy if you have a basic science background and guided by the book so read and take notes for easy understanding. The TA's are helpful. go to discussion as the worksheets are graded. This class is easy since there is only a midterm and exam, but need to study notes
Kurt is a very fair grader- his courses are typically curved to create a competitive environment, but the curve seems forgiving. He doesn't teach terms; instead, he gives students the tools needed to problem-solve and apply knowledge to real in-field scenarios. Don't buy the textbook!
While he clearly has passion for what he teaches and researches, Professor Feigl is often monotonous during his lectures. Content is conveyed clearly and easily for the student, but it can take a little concentration. I recommend taking notes not only on the Powerpoint, but also anything he has to say.
He is a nice guy and knows what hes talking about, but he's not the best at giving lectures (stutters). His lecture slides are really all over the place and hard to follow. He asks tophat questions that are confusing in less than a minute, and those are graded. To fully understand what's going on you would need to read from the book
The things that show up on his exams are barely related to what was covered in class, yet he gives nothing outlining what you will be tested on. He says your notes should be a guide, but his powerpoints are confusing, hard to take notes from, and filled with lots of un-useful content. Clicker questions are on untaught material. Would NOT recommend.
Grades his class based on a curve. Lecture material is informative and interesting. He's not the best lecturer (e.g. stutters, mumbles) but he acknowledges this. Clicker questions can be ambiguous at times but do relate to the material. Would take class again.
Though it's clear he knows what he's talking about, he isn't very clear in his teaching. BEWARE OF CLICKER QUESTIONS, must keep up on the readings. Only two tests (including final) but they're very difficult, though they are curved. Cumulative final.
He's not terrible, but he's not good either. He stutters a lot and frequently pauses mid-sentence to think of what to say. Lectures can be a little hard to understand at times. This is by no means an easy A class though. The tests are very difficult, so be prepared to study A LOT if you want to get an AB or higher.
He is a poor lecturer who puts you to sleep and does little to clarify what is said in the readings. The iClicker questions were more like trivia questions rather than testing what was covered in the book. Easy class, but take it with a different professor if possible.
His lectures are hard to sit through. He is very scattered in his teaching style. His iClicker questions are often impossible, and graded on correctness. The midterm and final are the only exams, and they are SO difficult. This course is way above the 100-level it's listed as. I would never recommend this course to anyone.
Feigl was the worst professor I've had so far. Lectures were extremely boring and did not enhance the reading whatsoever. His exams were impossible, which had questions we had never talked about. Additionally, this course felt like there was too much material to cover. In the end, I would not recommend Feigl or this course for that matter.
Kurt Feigl is BY FAR the worst professor I have ever taken a class from. I started the class genuinely interested in the subject, but after taking it, I will most likely never take a geoscience class again. He is an AWFUL lecturer, tends to go on radical environmentalist political rants, and will go off topic constantly. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS EVER.
Terrible lectures, no help at all when asked. Tests are way too hard and do not reflect anything learned in class
TERRIBLE LECTURER. Readings are long and he only focuses on one specific part of the reading and sometimes lecturers on something different that was read. Midterm and final exam are impossible. Curve isn't great. Would not recommend this class.
Feigl is one of the worst professors I've ever taken. Lecture feels like 3 hours instead of 50 min. His lectures were dry, boring, and didn't enhance an understanding of the material. I learned more from the book than from him. His clicker questions were awful. There were so many, and they were more like trivia than actual facts from the reading.
The lectures were awkward and lacked organization; Feigl merely discussed random pictures and his political beliefs. Clicker questions were often irrelevant andor poorly worded, difficult too. Exams-midterm and final-had extremely unclear questionsanswers and required memorizing random details from the textbook. Would not take again.
Painfully awkward lecturer. Will often go off on uneducated political tangents. Learned absolutely nothing from him. If it wasn't for the clicker questions I would've never gone and gotten the same grade. Also includes unrelated questions on midterm
Taking him with a 1 credit class. He assigns too many questions for homework for a 1 credit class and is not very clear in making his points during lecture. He also has poor presentation skills.
Kurt was a adequate lecturer. Occasionally he would push someone when giving an example in front of the class. I don't know whether it was good to make them more confident presenters or if it just scared and humiliated them. This class was nearly entirely based on homeworks from the book. The book was good but the grader was brutally strict.
I took this class because i needed a simple science credit. Big mistake. Poorly lectured, poorly written test, etc. Would not take this class
Making my first review on ratemyprofessor because of how BAD Feigl is. Presentation skills of an 5th grader. Rarely covers the readings. Clicker and test questions are poorly worded. You have to basically read the whole book to learn anything. Feigl also enjoys to share his liberal views daily.
Where to begin...Feigl wrote the exams, which were riddled with errors and poorly-worded questions. In lecture, he was often hard to follow. Rather than checking to see if we read (the point of clicker questions) he asks difficult questions that go beyond the scope of course material. I would not recommend this professor.
I took this class to fulfill science credits. Very frustrating professor. He told us multiple times before the mid-term that "our notes are the best study guide" which was not true at all. Go to lecture for the clicker points but study the book more than what was lectured. Labs are not very helpful. I do not recommend this class.
"It is unsustainable to have more than two kids." This is the kind of crap that Feigl teaches. His powerpoint presentations are purely pictures and don't relate to the information he teaches.
This class was unnecessarily hard. Professor Feigl was a terrible lecturer who went WAY too fast (1 slide every 10-30 seconds) and the clicker questions often require knowledge of which he has not taught. The course itself is very reading extensive (up to 90 pages per week). Also, the labs are graded much too harshly. DO NOT TAKE THIS AS A FILLER!
Class is BORING, he does not make the material interesting by any means, the tests are hard despite the dry and simple material. Don't take this class
Feigl is an okay professor. He LOVES modeling and math, so be warned. He tries to make things understandable, but whether or not he succeeds varies. He is open to questions, but doesn't answer them clearly. He co-taught this course with DeMets who clarified when Feigl couldn't. His homeworks were Matlab heavy and added extra work to learn it.
Class is extremely boring. Exams are difficult, but extremely well curved. Just took the class Fall 09. 1 midterm, 1 final, lab worksheets are 35% of your grade, and clicker questions. I got good grades on worksheets and clickers, but a 68 on midterm 1 and a 72 on the Final... AB in the class! The class doesn't seem easy, but the curve is amazing!
Good Guy. I feel a bad for him that he knows he has trouble speaking in front of the class--overall he tries. However, BEWARE of the questions in class. Sometimes you basically need to have before to know the answers. HARD exams. ABSOLUTELY have to read and know it all. However, as with any GenEd, its an overview and exams could be tested on anythi
Bad lecturer. Irrelevant clicker questions. I mean, it's Geology 100, it should have been an easy A, but we didn't learn anything in lecture. I'd recommend reading the book during lecture instead of listening to him
Participation questions in lecture were graded on whether you got them right and often had nothing to do with the subject matter. Couldn't speak clearly. I depended solely on the textbook for learning the material for this course. Good thing it was a good book.
Worst teacher that I have ever had, I will do everything in my power to never attend one of his classes again. Doesn't know how to speak in front of a group, and this interferes with a basic understanding of the subject manner.
very unclear, tests on nothing from lecture. easy... to get a c.
This class if awful. Do not ever take it.
He gives a few pop quizes, so you pretty much have to always go. Some of the questions on the quizes and tests are very subjective and difficult to answer because most of what you are taught during lecture is not helpful in answering them, and other questions could be answered by a monkey Easy to get a B or a C if you apply yourself, an A is not.
