Genuinely the worst lecturer I've ever had. She is incapable of creating a comprehensive lecture narrative, goes on a bunch of tangents, and manages to make a really interesting topic incredibly boring. Discussions are the only part of class that aren't a total waste of time. I'm lucky I've read Machiavelli before but if you haven't you'd be lost.
⁤⁤The professor was disorganized, and communication was unclear. ⁤⁤The layout of the course materials was confusing and it was difficult to follow assignments and deadlines. ⁤⁤Instructions were vague but expectations were high. ⁤⁤Despite my excitement for the material, this course left me so stressed, rather than engaged. ⁤⁤Would not recommend.
It's clear KPC really knows her stuff but she is relatively tough on her students. I really liked the class in person because she's an engaging lecturer, but as soon as the class went online it went to chaos. She did not make her class very flexible for students in the pandemic but she is clearly brilliant.
As long as you do all the readings before exams, you'll be fine. Attendance was a large part of the grade though, so be prepared to show up or lose lots of points.
KPC is a Professor that knows her stuff. She expects her students to have read their part when they come to lecture which is probably why people complain about her the most. She is a bit disorganized but in a way that for me kept me on my toes. As long as you follow her train of thought you'll most likely understand where she is going.
This class consists of her talking about her thoughts on Machiavelli's books, with no real clear lecture flow or relevance. The tests are manageable, but the papers are graded harshly. There are also very few grades in the class, and the only reason to attend lecture is because she takes attendance. Overall nice professor, pointless class.
A very great lecturer, however, she lacked clear lecture outlines that made it difficult to write organized notes. I thought she was a very caring professor that tried very hard to make the class enjoyable.
I absolutely adored Professor Phillips-Court. Incredibly intelligent and knowledgable and always willing to answer questions, and it's not difficult to do well. It's so refreshing to find a professor who's still passionate about their field! I enjoyed the this course so much I rearranged my graduation trip to Europe to include Italy. Thank you KPC!
KPC is a total gem and her cross-listed course on Machiavelli and His World is awesome. Yes, attendance is required if you want a good grade but her lectures are very compelling because she is such an expert on the topic. Knows how to teach well and I am always impress by how much I take away from her lectures. Thank you Professor Phillips-Court!
Clear example of a professor who knows a lot about her subject but doesn't know how to teach. Lectures are scattered and unorganized, and if you miss one class you'll be pretty confused. Her slides are just a few single word bullets and pictures. Also treats the lecture like a discussion except there are 150 of us. Frustrating class to sit through
Kristin makes you enjoy going to class. She speaks in Italian and English roughly the same amount to help out less fluent speakers. The grade is based on a few exams and papers that can get tricky if you do not study or pay attention in class. I also really liked that her grading is based on an individual basis rather than strict standards.
Kristin is hilarious and so fun as a professor. She made hard material easy to learn and understand.
So glad I took this class before graduating
Awesome professor who knows her stuff and gives good feedback. Not just literature but she uses slides about art in the time of the Renaissance like Michelangelo and da vinci
Different from other classes because we studied the art and philosophy of the Renaissnance together with the literature. She got a teaching award, great professor who really cares. Take it
KPC knows what she is talking about. She has so much information on these topics, and really makes the learning experience as personal as possible. She had a bunch of the students over to her house for a homemade meal and to hang out and talk about class stuff. Awesome prof.
This course is really interesting and I love how it brings together history, philosophy and literature. It challenges you to think in a different way especially who influence who in the Renaissance. The professor is passionate about the material so sometimes it's hard to tell what is important. My favorite class so far. Take it!
I took the online class. Lots of reading, 7+ books and 2-3 hrs worth of online reading every week as well. She is impossible to get ahold of. Weekly mini quizzes that are ambiguious in the variable answers that get credit. Wkly essays given Fri, due Mon. Mid-term &Final exam ppr each worth 20% of final grade. TA's were tough graders but explanatory
Prof. Court likes to ramble. Her lectures are sometimes directionless, but her enthusiasm and knowledge are impressive. She knows her stuff, and you'll come out of this class feeling like you've learned from a truly great professor. She knows the texts by heart but seems to be genuinely interested in your thoughts. A great, unique class - take it.
Awesome professor who is passionate about the topic. I learned about the Renassance, not just the literature. She connects everything together with paintings and history or politics of the times. Some of the philosophical background was difficult, but overall I loved this class!
