Professor Nyhoff deserves credit despite the flawed MHR 300 format. She tries her best, offers helpful lectures for quizzes, and makes an effort to know students. The strict grading comes from the course design, not her. Follow the rubrics closely, all the way to the small details, and you'll do fine. Make sure you do extra credit for a boost!
EXTREMELY tough grader for no reason! Avoid if possible. Boring lectures and does NOT do a great job of helping prepare for tests.
Horrible. Quizzes are insanely difficult for being a required class and her lectures do not prep you. Condescending. Boring lectures and paces way too much during lecture
Recommend!
MHR 300 is a required class. I selected Professor Nyhoff based on a lot of good feedback I received about her from my friends and I have not been disappointed. I really like the professor and her teaching style.
Was the hardest grader I ever experienced. Clearly favored other students and even after following rubrics exactly how she instructed us to, she takes off insane amounts of points. The class itself isn't unenjoyable but the way she graded is extremely defeating and upsetting.
Professor Nyhoff was always available and very eager to help. Outside of this there weren't many positives. Grading criteria is inconsistent and she tends to be an overly tough grader. She would take points off for nit-picky things, and sometimes for some people and not others. Lectures were also a waste of time despite attendance being mandatory.
After some students stopped paying attention to her class because it was was pathetically easy, instead of reflecting upon herself she blamed the students and disallowed us from using laptops to take notes. She did tell us we could use laptops if we wanted, but she would mark us as absent as a compromise (wow such a balanced and fair choice)
I think Professor Nyhoff seems like a good/interesting person outside class but that doesn't make her a good professor. Very ambiguous instructions on every assignment and then she gets upset you didn't have something she didn't ask you to do in the rubric. Not too hard but just an annoying/boring class overall, take it with someone else.
She clearly has her favorite students and it feels like she is on a power trip. She refers to us as "friends" or "students" as if we are children. Lectures haphazardly repeat the textbook. She tends to get lost in her thoughts rather than listening to students' ideas (which she asks for participation in) because she wants to talk instead.
Kelly is fantastic and will be more than willing to help outside of class. MHR gets a bad wrap but Kelly is great. Use her as a resource for career stuff, she is very helpful.
Avoid her. Vague directions lead to confusion and harsh grading because no one knows what they are doing (she got mad because no one had works cited because it wasn't on the rubric). Lectures are rushed, rarely provide relevant information beyond the textbook, and it sounds like she's constantly out of breath because she tries to beat the clock.
Weekly lectures are so dry and boring, hardest grader ever even on easy group projects. This should be an easy class but taking it with her will make it so hard. Take it with anyone but her. Quizzes are hard.
