This is for J405. McGarr's no phone policy is not bad at all. She is accessible outside class and very flexible with deadlines and absences if you communicate with her beforehand. She is passionate about her work and allows endless opportunity for writing. For her workshop class just participate and fully work hard on a total of 3 story pieces.

Prof. McGarr is an outstanding instructor for J201. Her lectures and highly entertaining, and the material is very interesting and can be applied to the many facets of journalism and strategic communication. I also recommend going to her office hours as she brings so much insight to the field of mass communication.

Prof McGarr is amazing! Funny, truly cares about her students, ready to answer any questions. The course is built to help you - don't be intimidated! It is a Comm B course so it will be more extensive, but everything you do in the course is backed by the TAs and the professor. Guest lecturers talk about the field of journalism/strat comm!

Mcgarr is lowkey one of my least favorite professors I've had. The concepts are elementary but they way she structures the class is heinous. Lectures aren't mandatory but her slide make zero sense. There are multiple 3 question quizzes throughout the semester and the questions are horribly phrased. Still got an A but this class is a pain

McGarr is a good professor, tends to read off the slides so I barely ever went to class, but still got an A. That being said this class is EXTREMELY BORING if you aren't interested in journalism or communication, i was super bored but Im a CS major who just took this for CommB. There are a lot of essays but if you get a easy TA, they are very easy

201 is nothing like the j-school in terms of material or writing style. McGarr is fine, but I ended up skipping all her lectures and still got an A. Going to discussion is much more crucial although a lot of the stuff in discussion is useless as well. Exams aren't that difficult and never even got the final back so... notebooks only in class.

Loved prof McGarr!! She is obviously passionate about teaching and cares about her students! Very interesting lectures and goes out of her way to give good feedback and answer student's questions. Also really encourages class participation so the chattier you are the better! Overall she was awesome and I would definitely recommend!

The class is fine and lectures are pretty good, but there's a good amount of busy work (since it's Comm B) and some of the writing prompts are pretty elementary. McGarr is a good lecturer but she takes multiple steps to avoid having direct communication with students outside of class. Also, she bans screens/devices in her lecture.

Prof. McGarr is awesome. She was very in tune with the class and seemed to understand what it is like to be a college student. Lectures were interesting for the most part as she made dull topics fun and engaging.

Journalism Majors: TAKE THIS CLASS. It is basically a book club with discussions every class period about great American novels and essays. They are all riveting, great books and pieces to have read just for context in the world as a whole. There is one essay at the end of class and 6 1 page responses. Probably one of the most fun classes.

Kathryn is amazing. So intelligent about the subject materials and can answer any questions that you have for her. The course layout is great but can jump around chronologically. Her lectures are very fascinating and involved. Only thing about her is that she asks for your full attention so no phones or laptops in class.

I really liked Professor McGarr. She was very knowledgeable about what she lectured on, and she gives it from a historical standpoint which I found quite interesting. There is a fair amount of reading and writing, but none of it felt like busy work. As long as you keep up with reading and pay attention at lecture, this class should be pretty easy.

I didn't expect to love this class, but it turned out to be my favorite! Although there is a lot of outside reading & writing, Mcgarr makes the instructions clear and gives you enough time to meet deadlines. Weekly discussion, you give a 4 min prepared speech on a reading and each student will lead a discussion. 4 short essays, 1 research paper.

Interesting lectures hooks you in with narratives. Inspires curiosity. Honest but encouraging. Doesnt pretend to know what she doesnt know.

Professor McGarr's lecture slides are of no help when you do not know the topic at hand. She does not provide definitions for any term, only examples. The readings, speeches, and discussion leadership are pointless in terms of getting a good grade on the midterm and final. They are fun and interesting, but I learn nothing through them. ugh.

Go to lecture because McGarr doesn't post lecture slides online. McGarr is also a bit dry and disorganized with her lectures. Three tests, one giant research paper at the end of the semester. Textbooks a few novels, I didnt read but got a decent grade.

Professor McGarr was very genuine and had clear passion for the subject, especially the history of journalism. We had 1 midterm, 1 final, 2 research essays, and various other activities. Discussion is mandatory! The material wasn't necessarily difficult, but it is a Comm B so it was a lot of work. Make sure to keep up and go to lecture!
