The premier example of what a professor should be. A clear master of the material who made me completely rethink how I thought about Russia and geopolitics in general. Would definitely take another course with her.
PS349- Professor Hendley is smart and passionate. I found the lectures and readings boring and hard to keep up with. Her expectations for assignments are very unclear and no rubric is provided. I would only take this class if you have time for a lot of reading and are passionate about the social and political influences that affect lawyers.
I took Poli Sci 349 with Professor Hendley and she was overall great. I will say there is a lot of reading (about 50 to 60 pages per lecture). If you're interested in law school, I would recommend this class. If you're not, it could be kind of boring. Overall great class and if you stay on top of your work, it's not too difficult at all.
Lots of assigned readings for each class that is occasionally tested on and lectures are full of personal anecdotes. Grades were never put into Canvas so I had no idea what my grade was until it was put into my transcript. Take this class only if you're super into Russian politics (not current events related), otherwise it might be boring.
Not that bad- just do all the readings and participate in discussions. Some of the homework is painful and useless, but you will learn a lot. My biggest issue is her essay criteria is unclear and she can be mean when giving feedback, which is unhelpful. The guest speakers are interesting and exams aren't that out of pocket if you attend class.
Knowledgable, but not fit to teach. She spends more time sharing personal anecdotes about Russia than giving a breakdown of its political structure. Her lectures are DENSE and tend to be hard to follow, if you ask for additional resources, she fails to provide. This is NOT a current events class, if you don't like history--don't take it.
Hendley is a great professor, who tells it like it is, and has a great sense of humor. Contracts is a dense class and can be complicated but she breaks up the material with videos and lots of practice problems so you are prepared for the exam. Don't be afraid to ask questions, she wants feedback to make sure you understand and can apply concepts.
Hendley is extremely knowledgeable about Russian politics. Lectures are definitely dense. Doing the reading not entirely necessary for exams, but beware of pop quizzes. Class is organized a bit strangely which can make it hard to keep up, but I wouldn't call it a difficult class. With a little bit of effort, an AB or above is possible.
The class was okay but probably will not be interesting to people unless you are really interested in the ins and outs of Russian politics (not meaning current event politics). I never fully understood her grading criteria/expectations for assignments. The exams are lecture-heavy but doing the readings will help you understand the content.
The class is interesting only if you are excited about Russian politics. Otherwise, you will probably find many lectures boring. There are 2 papers to write which are fairly easy to complete. Exams are all blue book, quite tough since they require you to have a great in-depth discussion in your essays. Professor in extremely knowledgeable.
Not required to attend lecture. slides posted online, midterm and final test very straightforward. Hendley was clear about expectations, her lectures could be interesting at times. One paper that is very easy to complete. Most of the grading seemed for completion, very little feedback or criticism. Don't need to read the book but it helps a lot!
This class was mixed between law students and undergrads, as the latter, I found it challenging but never unfair. The class often made us think about our positions as Western students. I enjoyed it greatly.
This was a pretty challenging class, but it was pretty rewarding. The in depth discussion of legal institutions can be a bit heavy at times, but I would definitely consider taking this class.
Professor Hendley is a great professor who is very knowledgable about what she is teaching. She does assign a large course reader and some articles can be dull, you won't fail if you don't read them but they will help when it comes to the paper and exams. She can be a tough grader but is always willing to work with you. Overall a great professor!
The class isn't easy by any means but also far from "impossible". Getting a good grade will require care on papers and GOOD notetaking. She is actually very funny, and incredibly helpful. Absurdly knowledgeable-could lecture for days. Also readings are SO unnecessary. pay attention in class and you'll be fine!
I think she is a really good lecturer and conveys her points very well. However, the way she grades exams is not really fair. Just because she is a law school dean doesn't mean she needs to grade like one. Learned alot though
She made Russian politics very interesting from her standpoint. The only thing I didn't like was how she graded exams. She is very difficult from that aspect.
Good class, tons of reading, most of it was unnecessary. Interesting material, but it's not an easy class. Exams are all in essay format, and they're pretty difficult. Class is worth it, but you have to be willing to be the time and effort into the class to get a good grade.
This was my second class with Hendley, and it was great. I would have never thought that I would be interested in Russian Politics, but she makes it so interesting! Don't buy the books and there is no need to read, she talks about all the key concepts in class. Not hard if you study, which should be obvious. Take a class with her...so worth it!
Very well informed lecturer, with no shortage of expertise on the subject. Class is organized and well-designed, with scheduled (required) participation, and use of various instructional tools. Russian Politics was one of the best classes I've ever taken, and its due to her knowledge, preparation and methods. Great course, great professor.
Excellent professor! She has expectations for her students, but she actually lets them know. I never thought I would learn so much about Russia.
Grading scale is very weird: a+ = 100, a = 95, a- = 92, ab= 90, b+ = 88, b = 85, etc.. other than that a good professor. not the most interesting material but she does tie it all together and tries to keep class entertaining with movies and clips. nice woman, fairly easy class. HUGE amounts of reading that aren't even a little necessary
Incredibly well prepared lecturer, knows how to take command over a room. She makes it very easy for you to succeed and it's difficult to do poorly if you go to class. Worst part: her classes are insanely early! Other than that, A+.
Amazing professor!!!! She does an excellent job at making sure you understand the material and is extremely helpful out of class. Very approachable and easy to talk to. DEFINITELY take this class.
Prof. Hendley is tough but good. She will give help if you ask, but wont baby you along the way. Attendance not taken, but VERY good idea to attend class. Lectures could get a bit long, but overall material was very interesting. Gradings & assign. are fair, but tough (2 essays & 2 exams). I learned a lot in this class. Would recommend her as prof.
K. Hendley is a great professor but she has NO SOCIAL SKILLS WHATSOEVER! Yes, her lecturing is interesting and engaging, but as a person she is terrible. Also a very uneven grader from my experience.
I enjoyed the class, and professor hendley was very helpful. The material is Law. and sometimes law can be boring, but she did a really good job keeping it interesting. I recommend her for any Poli sci or pre-law student looking at studying law.
class is a bore! material is ridiculously easy, but she curves it so you have to do cartwheels to get an A. if you are a poli sci major, this class will be pointless for you, anyone else, don't bother, you'll be bored by it's easiness, and frustrated by her grading
Hendley is tough as nails and expects her students to put a lot of work into her class. Thank God. I got more of her class than most I have had here. She's a great professor, and although most of her students don't understand it, she has great sense of dry humor. Kathryn the Great she is!
Kathryn the Great! Hendley is the best professor I've ever had. Take this class!
Interesting class, informative, but very fast paced. A very harsh and detail oriented grader. She's nice, and helpful, but this is not an easy class
