His course is too focused on theory, should be a math major class instead of a ECE or CS class. Works are unnecessarily complicated. Feels like the professor is showing off his skills in math and computer science, instead of trying to teach, in which may explain his poor handwriting and arrogance.
This class used to be more implementation-oriented, but for some reason, he changed the curriculum to focus solely on the theoretical side by taking four exams rather than a team project. The official reason given was unsatisfactory projects. He doesn't provide notes or record lectures and the class would be great for math majors not CS majors.
He lectures too much for a flipped class and frequently makes mistakes in his work, yet is kind of arrogant about his teaching ability. Some exams are needlessly hard and they tend to focus on the underlying math, not the actual useful content covered in the homework. It's a tough course taught poorly.
tough class
Lectures are not helpful, explanations are terrible and solutions often have errors in them that are not addressed.
Assignments have errors, problem explanations in class are not explained well.
Prof. Kangwook Lee is an expert in Machine Learning. He delivers clear and informative lectures, though a bit math-heavy. He clearly cares about students learning and is very accessible outside of class/online to help. Homeworks are long but fair. Exams can be intimidating (sometimes the problem only has a few words), but he grades leniently.
His blackboard writing is organized awfully, hard to understand.
Made the class incredibly enjoyable and intellectually stimulating. Demonstrates a deep understanding of student concerns and addresses them effectively.
The best Professor I have ever had in this university!
He is great!
Prof. Lee is knowledgable, caring, and always patient to answer questions. He would adjust deadlines when homework takes long to finish. He is also very quick to respond to piazza posts. However, the video lectures are a bit too fast and confusing at times. Some tests were intentionally easy.
The class isn't the easiest and the format was bad, but that's not Kangwook's fault. He was very flexible with deadlines and incredibly helpful on piazza. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He made some of our exams intentionally easy to help our grades a bit. The 1's down below were all cheaters he caught. Dont cheat...
Seemed to care about students doing well in the course and took into account feedback throughout the semester. His lectures were interesting and he was straightforward about expectations and boundaries. Highly recommend
Very nice professor, tried hard to make sure we all understand the material well. I went to his OH often and he is always supportive and caring.
If you follow his lecture, you will guarantee to get an A. Very clear explanation on the math part. This course is fairly easy compared to other Engineering courses. If you are not an engineering student, be prepared for a flip-course style. He is very strict on cheating and plagiarism, so don't try to fool him.
He is smart, but it can be hard to understand his explanation since he is to ahead of any of the student. However, course is interesting, and he manages it pretty well. A lot of activities to work on, and assignments particularly are really difficult. Yet if you like intellectually challenging class, you will like his class.
I never got a positive feedback. Even if I worked so hard, but the feedback from this professor was always negative. I think I got Learned Helplessness from this person.
Unorganized, difficult to understand, somewhat emotional
He is a nice guy. Gives good feedback and is willing to listen to students! He did a great job teaching CS/ECE 761 as a new professor.
Not good, too many "I don't know"
If you want to keep your GPA, avoid this dude.
KL is strict but you will get to learn a lot! Highly recommended ind study if you want to learn something in ML
I don't get it. Why do they have to lock the assignments till the start of class? You can discuss it in class anyway. Unlocking the assignments earlier would make the course much less stressful. They are just using this way to force everybody to come to class, but it is not necessary at all.
Too many assignments. The assignments are locked until the start of each class and are due right after the class ends. Too stressful to take this course.
The professor gets F too.
They accidentally uploaded the answer of the final during the final, and some students downloaded it. After discovering that they uploaded the answer, they gave us another exam but they somehow still graded the first exam. Most unfair exam I ever had.
Lecture not good, organized poorly and have strong accent. His handwriting is also terrible. What is more, he does not know how to wipe a blackboard. After some time, the blackboard becomes a mix of white trace mixed with his poor handwriting. Reading the blackboard is like torture.
Professor Lee is a real gem for his capabilities. He is very committed to his job as a teacher.
He caught about 20 to 30 people for plagiarism on the final project. That is totally right. But the funny thing is that one of the "model" final project he posted was completely plagiarized from another article. The other article is written in another language, so he failed to recognize this plagiarism.
Too hard to understand his accent. Never knows how much work to assign. We were asked to finish some questions on every class, but the questions were too many. The class was only 75 minutes, and it was only enough to finish half of the questions. Homeworks also. I took 4 courses last semester, but 50% of my time were consumed by this course.
Professor Lee is new to UW-Madison (2019) but he is super capable and passionate about teaching, and easy to access. Even though he said this is his first time teaching, he did an excellent job. You can receive very constructive feedback on not only projects/lectures but also your future learning if you asked him for some advice. Highly recommended
Great professor
Although there is a lot of work, but worth it! He is patient and nice!
