Katie was a great professor. All assignments, quizzes, and exams were online, so if you need to skip a day or two, it is super easy to catch up. Attendance is mandatory (get points for being there), but she does make it so you can miss a couple.
Had her fall sem of 2024 and really enjoyed this class. It was required for me as a Genetics and Genomics major, but Katie is incredibly helpful and flexible. Don't hesitate to reach out to her with questions. Lots of group projects in this course so be prepared to meet a lot of new people.
Katie is awesome and her class is easy. Attendance matters.
Great lecturer for the first half of Genetics 133, was very clear about criteria and very passionate about the subject matter. All quizzes and exams were online.
This was a good intro class for a Genetics major (can be good for non genetics majors just lots of specific info for genetics majors). Lots of guests with info on future careers/classes. The peer mentor groups are great, highly recommend as a chill/interesting 1st year seminar class.
Genetics in the news was an amazing class with amazing professors. Katie made everything super easy to understand and the grading was extremely lenient and fair. Would highly recommend for non-science majors or anyone interested in genetics, was a great class !!!!!
Katie is awesome, I totally recommend taking this class if you are a genetics major or have interest in the STEM field. Sort of a lot of work for a one credit class, but inspirational and fun.
Overall a great teacher. Lot of work for a one credit class, though.
She is the best! Her lectures are awesome and very well taught!
Definitely would not recommend taking this for general bio credit coming from a non STEM major. Lectures are very fast and lot's of content, but tests are online and open note. Lot's of drops on homework and tests but you will need them. If genetics/biology is not your strong suit I would pick something else, too much work for an intro class.
Katie knows all of her students names before class begins, but that's the only good thing I'll say about this class. The structure was very disorganized, all assignments were due basically at once, and I learned nothing about genetics. She also discourages people from taking "hard" classes that they literally need for their major?
This class is SO hard, do not take for a regular science credit, coming from someone who is not a STEM major it was really hard and required a lot of background information. The professor is super nice and makes the lectures interesting, but there is so much content it can be really hard to understand. There is lots of drops but you'll need them!
Amazing prof... so helpful and caring. She will know your name before you even meet
She's great. Super nice teacher, happy to help. Take her class you'll love genetics after
Katie is one of the best professors I've had at UW. She is funny and truly cares about her students. Her lectures are definitely content heavy and occasionally a little boring, but she posts good slides so you can always review later. I would recommend anyone to take a class with Katie and would like to take more classes with her myself.
Overall great and friendly professor that wants you to do well. Gen133 is super content heavy though-- just a warning for others like me that only wanted an easy bio breadth. Katie does a great job at flying through content, and even she says it has too much material. Exams were through canvas. Professor is great, not sure I'd take this as a gen ed
Katie was a very good professor and she took the time to learn everybody's names. You do a lot of helpful assignments in this class but I honestly didn't understand the genetics side of it- she doesn't really teach genetics but more prepares you for a career in science. But everything we did felt like it should've been more than a 1 credit class
Genetics 133 was a super easy class, probably not as easy as her upper level courses. Katie is great and genuinely cares about her students. She wants us to succeed both professionally and personally, and makes sure to check in with individual students. Passionate about her job too.
She is great for a freshman seminar class! there are only a few (fairly easy) assignments to do throughout the year. The assignments are usually pretty quick or are a group project but you have a few weeks to get them done. Definitely good exposure into the major and she is a good resource to have met early on!
Katie was a very nice and organized professor. There was a lot of content, but Katie made it interesting. I definitely recommend Katie's class for those who need bio credit or are interested in genetics.
The course is content heavy but Katie made lecture enjoyable and explained stuff really well. She's also really accessible and answered emails fast. 10/10 do recommend
Dr. Vermillion is an amazing professor and her lectures are really interesting. However, the class is structured so that you have 5 assignments the whole semester and they're all due the same day. She never says anything about the projects in class and we get like 10 minutes total to talk to out groups, so you'll have to do a lot outside of class.
The professor was very kind and the grading was very fair. An extra credit opportunity also allowed you to boost your grade considerably. The course can be challenging at times for a non-biology major.
This professor is super caring and fun, but I recommend taking the class if you have experience in biology. Very interesting but lots of readings and lectures.
Her lecture are interesting. The class was a bit more technical that I originally thought it would be, but really not that hard. She give out a lot of busy work but you can whip it out pretty quick.
Fine topics in the class. Her teaching was pure lectures and her voice is completely monotone, so it's hard not to zone out, then you have to pause the lecture and go back to see what you missed the first time. She's extremely sweet, it's just difficult to listen to her for as long as the lectures are
She is one of the nicest and most caring people I've ever met. Although the class was a bit difficult at times she's always there to help every single one of her students and wants you to be successful. PLEASE watch her lectures, it will be the most helpful for quizzes and exams AND take notes. One exam and quiz is dropped which is very helpful.
Definitely had to work to do well in this class, but very doable if you do. One assignment, participation activity, quiz, and exam are all dropped, so if you don't do well on one thing it's not a big deal. Katie really seems to care about students, but her lectures sometimes rush over important topics, so make sure you review everything for exams
Katie led the genetics capstone and was fantastic. Down to earth and passionate she was a great prof
The Freshman Seminar in Genetics with Katie Vermillion is the biggest waste of time and I do not recommend this course for anyone. It's not a hard course (only worth one credit), but it's so unstructured that it's impossible to keep track of what you're supposed to be doing, and Katie doesn't give reminders or help you keep track of assignments.
Genetics in the News is very doable for anyone. There is a review presentation that is comprehensive and you should work to know before the tests. Just pay attention in the lectures. You'll be fine.
