Easy lecture Nice guy
I don't understand the negativity on these reviews. Karl's an amazing professor. He genuinely cares and he just wants you to try and do your best. He's so open to giving extra help if needed. Attendance is mandatory for lectures, but you can miss 1. He's a little disorganized on canvas, but clear in class. Gives fair deadlines. I highly recommend!!
Karl cares. Don't expect to learn a whole lot of concrete material. The course is more about introducing you to the real-world application of statistical modeling at a very basic level.
Karl is absolutely awesome.
Please don't take him! He is extremely disorganized. Not only does he not follow his own grading on the syllabus but he doesn't have a class structure!! He just rambles with no presentation or any preparation beforehand. Attendance is mandatory but is a waste of time. The group project is 40 % of our grade and he gives absolutely no guidance.
I've only gone to two of this lectures and I can already tell how incredibly disorganized his class is. I really want to take STAT 333 this semester and there's only one section so I'm stuck with him but I would advise that you stay away from him if possible.
Incredibly disorganized. Course isn't difficult by any means, but it is stressful to deal with constantly shifting deadlines, assignments, etc. Hard to reach outside of class. Completely avoids theoretical concepts and the "why" behind any of what is learned. However, he's pretty nice and gives a lot of sage advice regarding statistical practice.
easy class and fun guy. rlly disorganized tho, so wouldn't recommend taking a hard class with him
Still ongoing lectures, but he is super easygoing and lets people try codes by themselves. Free spirits which I enjoy lectures just let me explore data stuff :)
If you want an easy A, just come and take this course. You would love him so much. He will show you his beautiful babies.
PROS: Friendly, good guy. CONS: Not the most effective teacher, you don't learn much. Midterm and hw still not graded on finals day. Assigns projects/exams last minute. Doesn't respond to emails. REC: Don't take him for fundamental or difficult courses like 333/424, but you can consider his 479 elective course. Go to every class and listen.
I don't know why people are so harsh to Karl, I really liked this class. Errors in research is not a very quantitative or difficult class, but I think it is wildly valuable. The devices he teaches to effectively read research are very useful. Karl is also a very energetic teacher; his positivity makes it impossible to not engage with the material.
I've had Karl for 2 classes - 433 and 479. I like him as a person but I haven't learned anything from his classes.Towards the end of the semester he started lecturing on random topics that seemed like they were from another class of his but then didn't teach us how to do it in R. Seemed like he just ran out of content. Does not respond to emails.
Karl will go on tangents a bit but he is basically the only stats professor I have had so far that made me interested in the class. He is pretty passionate. I am taking a class with him again because he makes class enjoyable, even if its not the hardest class.
Seems like he doesn't put a lot of effort into planning this course and it shows. Disorganized and low effort on his part. Felt like my time was misused.
Not the worst guy, he seems to be passionate and knowledgeable but he's very scatter-minded and the course is very disorganized. He does ramble a bit too much on topics irrelevant to the class but this class isn't the worst.
Karl can definitely help you gain love for a subject but at the same time he might not be able to help you understand it clearly. He drifts a lot from his topic but, I think that's because of his curiosity. He is a very knowledgeable professor, just needs to work on his explanations a bit. ez class.
HE IS BAD! Don't take him, the class was highly disorganized, the information about the exam was given on the exam day. there is not structure to this class, no explanation. He is just bad. RUN DONT TAKE HIM
This is such a fundamental course, but Karl did a poor job of teaching it. He is very smart/passionate, but scatter-minded and confusing. Rarely responds to emails and grading criteria is pretty unclear. Group project is worth a lot, but didn't give very helpful feedback. Easy class, but you won't learn much & will worry about grade until the end.
Karl was a nice guy, but his lectures were quite boring. The midterm was based off of the homework, but I wish that we were given a few practice problems. The group project is pretty important for your grade, so make sure you do well on that. Overall, this was the first time that this class was taught so I'd say he did a pretty decent job with it.
Karl is a very smart guy, but a horrible teacher. 40% of the grade is the project, which isn't that bad. Half of the midterm was from homework problems and the final was a joke. He's incredibly frustrating and hard to reach out of class. Not hard to get a good grade, but the experience is quite bad.
Not a hard grader. But his lecture could easily be one of my worst experience.
Karl was the person who got me interested in data science! Loved him! People who did not like him were clearly not interested.
The grading criteria is extremely unclear, and he doesn't help much in his office hour. You have to figure out almost all the things by yourself. Even if you work hard enough, you still don't know what will be your grade, because of his frustrating comments on your project. DON'T CHOOSE HIM (for your sanity health).
He always think he is a good professor, but students cannot learn anything from his class. That's funny.
He doesn't know how to teach, worst professor in statistic department.
You won't learn anything, avoid him.
If you are interested in data science Karl is your guy! He doesn't just teach you regression he teaches you statistical learning which is the introduction to machine learning. The project is very important to understanding the material so spend time on it!
Also had Prof Rohe for 333. Tough in that he wants YOU to be inspired and create and get excited about the material, so he doesn't give much for guidelines... but still has expectations. Still, both were good, worthwhile classes. I learned a lot!
The worst stat class I have ever taken. He shows no respect to his students and his work. AVOID HIM!!! You're gonna learn nothing from his classes.
Unclear grading but may not be tough, because it is unclear; difficult to understand instructions on lecture. Reviews R codes on lecture, though hard to follow(you can read code by your self and ask TA or him). Sometimes gives enough feedback on lecture(usually does not). It is unfortunate such a hot topic is taught by him.
Hardly explain anything during lecture. He does not really care about students. Give unrelated exam and unclear grade. Well, he is a tough grader. Do not recommend this professor.
The lecture is not well organized and you can rarely get some knowledge in the class time. The professor also does not give a clear expectation for the project. Do not recommend this professor.
To be fair, Karl is not too tough. Although sometimes the classes are confusing, you can find all the ideas in the book. The final project takes a lot of time! Overall Karl is a helpful and nice teacher!
Use other school's slides and not even look at it before class. Give random homework and he didn't even have the answer. Midterms are directly from book but you basically learn by your own and don't take it if you can't code (level above CS367, not just 302). You have to know so much data programming to take an undergrad stat course. Rediculous
He used the slides all coming from an online course. Did not prepare for this class at all except reading through the slides during each class. I would say he's not a prof responsible for students enough. My interest in machine learning was almost ruined because of him
Heavy proof in a class which designed to be practical. Disorganized about material. Easy homework but extremely hard exam. Avoid him.
The worst ever
People are being unnecessarily hard on Prof. Rohe. Follow the rubric on the project, and actually include what he tells you to (for example, I saw a project that used only simple linear regression, not multiple, like he wanted). The test is mostly theoretical. It's not hard.
I was nervous about this professor after reading his previous reviews but he was great! First two midterms were very reasonable, final was a bit more challenging. Homework assignments were short and pretty easy. You don't need the book he posts the homework questions online. Gave extra credit occasionally.
He opens my door to Statistics !----Love 333
Bad professor! Give extremely low score for project. Exams are not hard, but project takes a great amount of grade. Don't take class from this professor!!! If the statistics department does not allow you to enroll into other statistics courses, please consider courses in other areas. He always letting you think rather than giving you correct answer
One of the better mathstats professors I've taken a class from. There's a bit too much focus on theory for an "applied regression" course, but he's great at explaining the material whether it's the underlying math or its actual applications. Don't skip lecture, though, since there's almost no communication outside it regarding due dates and such.
It was ok. Not too hard of a class to do well in. He teaches through many proofs which is easy to get lost in and sometimes its even hard to pinpoint a question you have. Grading is very fair but you MUST do your homework or you will do badly in the class. Nice guy overall though.
Don't text or be on your phone in his class. He will call you out if you are not paying complete detention. Exams are easy if you go to the lectures. He likes to ask the class hard questions and say that it would be one of the easy questions on the exam.
Coming into the semester, I was kind of scared to have Karl because of all of the bad reviews he got on this site. However, I think he was a pretty good prof. The exams were fair (except for parts of the final), and to me he made things pretty clear in lecture. He can be a little all over the place at times, but for the most part a good prof
Guy is legitimately passionate about his subject, tries to make it as interesting to us as it is to him. His lectures can be a bit erroneous and not too helpful to relevant assignments. Homeworks are easy, but quizzes/exams tend to be much harder. Doesn't post a lot of practice materials. Be wary.
He was not a good teacher.
Karl is a great guy, but isn't great at teaching. Most lectures were simply boring. He assumes you know quite a bit about math and notation, yet is uncertain if you know what a normal distribution is. Try to not take 333 with Karl. If you have to, just be sure to ask questions to steer him towards actually teaching.
What I learned in a semester could have been learned in two weeks. Most lectures were pointless and didn't relay any real information. He told us what the concepts were, but not what they meant or the mechanics behind them. Karl needs to take teaching 101... However, you can tell he is really passionate about sharing statistics which was refreshing
About 1/10 of the lecture is spent on relevant material and statistical methodology/theory while the rest is used for his pedantic rambling.
Lectures are completely useless. Very scattered, lack focus, and just generally not helpful. Test questions are very vague and your answers will be subject to his interpretation. Homework is due every week. It is very long and unrelated to lecture. Strongly advise against taking class with this professor.
Lecture boring, exams difficult and more in depth than his examples/lectures which is unfair for people who are not more exposed to material. Brief introduction to concepts without great examples or explanations. Compared to other prof for my semester, his exam questions are infinitely harder which sucks for those who don't have the easier prof.
He is probably the worst professor I have ever had. He is so scattered and really has no idea how to teach a class. He should not be a professor at all.
Lectures not bad, kinda boring. Exams challenging, make you go very in depth. Don't take with him if first stats course.
the most annoying thing is his random quiz...
