Having read the course descriptions, I was excited and ready to work for a good grade. HOWEVER, after reaching out for help multiple times I received no helpful assistance. Overall, this course was the biggest mistake I've made thus far at UW Madison. I did the readings, went to class, struggled and was disappointed by how I was treated in return.

The class itself is interesting, and Allen is very passionate about the things she teaches. However, do NOT take this class for comm B, the workload is way too much with the added essays and assignments in the comm B portion on top of long weekly discussion posts and essay exams for the regular portion of the course.

Took her in BYUH during her one semester off wisconsin. Very interesting and tough the class is innately by itself is of extreme workload and chockful of readings, the teacher does make it easier to relate to and ultimately enjoy the class.

You could never go to class and get an A if you're good with literature. The exams were the easy part, it was the 2 five question online quizzes every week. It's a lot of work, to be honest the Comm B part with the essays is easier, at least with my TA it was. The class is a pain, but she is a great professor. She's enthusiastic and there to help.

Professor Allen is great! Super helpful, knowledgeable, and fair. The class itself is also pretty good. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did but Professor Allen made it great. This semester was the first semester of a "mixed classroom" (integrated online stuff) so there were some pointless assignments but Prof. Allen was open to feedback.

The class is too boring and ridiculously heavy workload for a summer course. The videos are not helpful either. I recommend not taking this class.

Dr. Allen is a great professor who loves teaching, a sometimes all too rare combination. There's no question that you'll learn a lot from her.

Easy class. Online class- you have to write and respond to a bunch of questions online but super easy to do. Didn't read the book? You can just look at other's respinses and write a new one from that. Quizzes you can take multiple times which is a joke. Easy A.

Professor Allen is kind and an easy grader. If you do a good job you will get a good grade. HOWEVER, she is unclear with the paper topics and assigns WAY too much work. 2 long papers, 3 smaller ones, 8 novels and weekly blogging is ridiculous for a 3 credit class. The info and class arent hard but its just too time consuming.

She's not always clear on papers right away, but if you ask, she will set you straight. Wonderful lecturer who really knows what she is talking about. Lots of novels, but very interesting. One of my favorite classes with one of my favorite professors.

Professor Allen's knowledge of Hans Christian Andersen and his tales is truly extensive. As long as one completes the readings and attends the lectures, a good grade is very manageable. She tries to be funny and isn't- which makes it funny. Very personable.

Prof. Allen is great and knows so much about Hans Christian Andersen. If you read the stories and know the terms she talks about in lecture, you're good for the exams. She tries to make jokes in class but she isn't funny which makes it funny.

Very nice person; very approachable. Good sense of humor, gives interesting lectures that tie in current events. Knows her stuff very well. Generous with grading Quite a bit of reading. Good at using different mediums online blogs, films, PPs, etc. Definitely recommended.

Fantastic professor! Engaging lectures! Good sense of humor! Includes contemporary importance. Active learning with plenty of opportunities to discuss. Approachable. Clear. Brings in different mediums (films, pictures). Engaging activities. Highly recommend any class with Professor Allen!

Julie is a wonderfully sweet and outgoing person. I really enjoyed this class. The reading wasn't too bad for me but I had just gotten back from a year in Denmark. Relate your essays to your life. she likes personal details. Do the readings!

Still one of my favorite professors! She explains all the stories so well, and as long as you read them and go to lecture you're pretty much guaranteed an A on the exams. Plus, lectures are fun anyway! She's also EXTREMELY nice!

Took the class online. Loved every minute of it. Lots of reading, but it is well worth it.

This class had SO MUCH READING. unless you are super interested in the immigrant experience I wouldn't recommend it. Seriously, like 100+ pages of reading a night. Gross.

The stories in this class were great and I LOVE Professor Allen! There's going to be nothing on the exam that she doesn't tell you in class, plus her lectures are super interesting and fun!

This class was really interesting, and Professor Allen was a good teacher. There was a lot of reading for this class, usually about 100 pages per week. You have to keep up because of weekly assignments, which actually weren't that bad.

She is a really great teacher sincerely nice person. Take caution though - there is a lot of reading for the class that you have to write about in class (so you can't just read it some of the time), and you a paper to write every week. Again, she is a great person, but be prepared for a lot of work!!

Amazing woman! The research essay topic was a little out there, but if you have ANY problems, she's more than willing to help you. The books are a little long and arduous, but the majority are interesting. If you need to take a humanities class and you like the 19th and early 20th century, I'd recommend it!!!

Very good teacher. Class is more of a discussion than a lecture. The reading is a bit dry but you don't HAVE to do all of it because the take home exam allows you to choose what topics you want to write about. She's dedicated enough to teaching to have stayed on the job until about two weeks before giving birth. Remember weekly learn@UW post!
