Not an easy A, but if you do a good job on all the work you can get one. Some of the homework assignments were rough, but I learned a lot. No exams, but you'll spend a lot of time on the class project. I really enjoyed the lectures, and prof was always happy to answer my questions.

606 was the most amazing class. I have never learned so much in a single course (programming, numerical methods, machine learning, thermodynamics, protein structure, and more.) I worked pretty hard for my grade, but it was totally worth it. Lectures were excellent, so don't skip them. I also really liked the class project, which I got to design.

Very meh. Her exams were easy, except for the last one which was devastating. I can't really complain about the grading though because she has a built in curve to her exams which was nice. She was technologically equipped, but not always all that sharp with the software. Lecture is boring, but the big knock was that the last exam was insanely hard.

Such a great professor, especially compared to a lot of the other calculus professors on campus. You could tell she really wanted you to succeed.

She is very disorganized and makes frequent mistakes during lectures. The class itself wasn't that hard, but she does a horrible job of explaining the concepts and made the content much harder than it needed to be, and the examples in class were nothing like the problems on the test.

Lectures are very helpful. She is tough on her set ways of grading. No talking during lecture even if you ask a question to your neighbor. However, she is very open to students asking her questions and she will review the concept. Her lessons and homework are very organized. Midterms are easy but the final kills.

For the most part, I really like Professor Mitchell. She is strict during lectures and will definitely call out talkers, so make sure to refrain from talking and pay attention. Lectures are important to attend, because she explains things a lot clearer than the textbook does. The midterms were very straightforward, but the final was pretty tough.

Julie is pretty disorganized in lecture; for example, she would start defining something without saying what she was defining. Her first two tests were SUPER easy but then she wrote a tough final and only gave us 5 points to make up for it. The homework is irrelevant but quizzes are similar to test questions. Take someone else if you can.

Julie Mitchell is just an alright professor. She is slightly disorganized with her lectures and she likes to jump around a lot. She often messes up during class so be prepared to correct her. Exams 1 and 2 were VERY easy but the final was a bit more difficult. Not afraid to call people out during lecture and even kick 'em out in front of everyone.

Julie has the perfect amount of sass for a math prof (you'll see). She removes all the theoretical stuff from the class and makes it to help you in engineering. Exams are easy (maybe not final?). First 2/3 of material is easy, last 1/3 is hard. Wednesday section you just get a worksheet to do so it is essentially useless.

One of her good qualities was that she genuinely cared about how her students did and if they wished to pursue math as a career. On the other hand, she messed up quite frequently in lecture, making the subject very confusing. Her first tests were very straightforward and the topics were outlined very starkly.

On the first day, she had a calendar for the whole semester, so you always knew what was going on in in case you missed class. Whatever you do, do not skip her review lectures. They were super helpful, and even the hardest problems on the final were like things she showed during review. No tricks, totally fair, but you gotta study hard or else.

Though her lectures are good (she often made a 75 minute lecture feel like a 50 minute), the homework is often really hard because it's not relevant to lecture, and the textbook isn't a big help. Exams aren't bad if you study well. Unless you're asking a question, don't talk in lecture--she'll yell at you! She doesn't tolerate laziness either!

The grading scheme was clear with a B average. She gave detailed info on exam topics, plus review material/lectures. The class was organized into units, so you knew what was on every quiz/exam. Class material is challenging, but no proofs. She's very happy to answer questions during or after lecture. However, she does not suffer fools gladly.

Solid. Clear and generous grading scheme. Julie has a good sense of humor and is open to teaching feedback. I gained A LOT from the extra credit, both career-planning wise, and it also saved me from getting a C after the final handed me my azz. Recommended. You can tell she really cares about your future.

She seemed really motherly. She definitely tries, and is a pretty good teacher (despite myself doing very poorly, received a BC). The homework and reading/lec/etc aren't very coherent with each other but exams are (relativly) easy to do well on. It's a good course and you can do very well in it. I'd recommend it.

Prof. Mitchell is really kind. The most frustrating part I think in this course would be I don't know why worksheet, homework (from book) and course notes (what she presented in lecture) are seldom coherent with each other. I took notes carefully every lecture but I always get stuck in homework problems. This makes me feel I don't learn much stuff

She is the first math professor I know to use Piazza, and the only professor answering all the questions there. Another big plus of her course is her super clear grading rubric, while many other math professors just "forget" to make one! Her lectures sometimes are confusing, but the worksheets help. You would not regret to take her course tho.

Her expectations for the final were unclear. Midterms were easy, final was VERY rigorous!

She is an above average math professor. She gives you abundant material to study from and wants her students to understand the concepts. The midterms were very soft on us. The grade distributions were really high and were lefr skewed. But then, her final wrecked everyone's grade because it was so hard. Now, the class distribution is now bell shaped

Wow, what a bunch of mean people below. She personally answered over 30 of my questions on piazza, and the TAs barely helped with that. I found the expectations of the class very clear and fair. The lectures could be improved, she seems like maybe a nervous person in front of the class, but ask her questions 1-on-1. Very helpful with xtra cred

Julie is a good mathematician. But she is not a good teacher--really confusing with her lecture. She seems manage to blend everything together and fill you with a bunch of new stuff without clarifying them. Worksheet&homework are quite different from what she taught in lecture . Quiz and test are relatively easy--make sense to match her teaching

Julie is not a very good teacher. She talks about what you will go over at the beginning of lecture but then blends everything together so you won't know which topic she's talking about. However, you are given a full sheet of paper to use on the exams so you can write any tough topic down so an A is not too difficult. She also give you extra credit

Lectures are very unorganized, she doesn't explain what she is doing half of the time, it seemed like her every answer to a question asked online is "I went over this in lecture", tests are a lot easier than homework problems and quizzes. Did not learn much from her and would not want to have a class with her again.

She is so boring and very unclear in her lecture. On her exams, however, you are granted an 8.5" x 11" note sheet so it the class is basically a joke. I didn't learn anything and crammed it all on my sheet. It is possible to get an A with a decent amount of effort.

She's a pretty good teacher. Towards the end of the semester she wasn't as good at explaining the material, but it was also harder material with less time to cover it. The tests were very easy, average on both was mid 80s. Most importantly, she DOES NOT teach using proofs - she uses actual examples. Perfect for engineering majors.

Tests are very straightforward and easy. Biweekly quizzes were tricky. Lectures are long and boring. She also would make mistakes that sometimes made her lectures confusing. Not my favorite professor, but also not horrible.

She is not a very good teacher. Her lectures are confusing and boring. She makes several mistakes when writing and talking so taking notes is difficult. Her tests are easy though. She will not try to trick you on tests.

The lectures are quite confusing. I learnt the material by watching MIT open course. The exams are extremely easy... Got perfect score on every test effortlessly...

I feel like she emphasized fundamental skills. As an engineer, I appreciated her straightforward approach to teaching the basics we need in future courses. Her exams do not try to trick you and if anything try to guide you toward the correct solutions.

I'm not a fan of UW profs on the whole, but Julie is one of the true rock stars. She's wicked smart, funny, and you just want to hang out with her because you feel like you would be smarter and a better person for it. Others have said that she's a little "all over the place" during lectures and that's true sometimes, but it works and she's hot.

Julie and the class were great. She taught using examples and not proofs, which was much better IMO. There's no curve, but she doesn't need one because she makes tests have more points available than the test is out of. The textbook is stupid and homework is useless, but you use the same one for every professor. Take 234 with her

The extra credit was one of the best assignments ever. Unlike some others posting here, I feel like I worked pretty hard for my grade and am proud of myself for hanging in there. The material in the class is hard, but the expectations were fair.

If you are self-motivated and enjoy learning, I think Julie is the professor for you. Her exams only cover the basics so you have time to dig into the other topics on your own or by talking to her and your TA. However, if you learn more when under pressure from hard exams, you won't get as much from her class as the exams aren't that challenging.

She explains concepts pretty well. Examples in class very close to what would be tested in quizzes and exams. Generous grade distribution. Recommend her.

Best calc professor at Madison. Goes over lots of examples and makes sure everyone is prepared for the exams. Very likable and interesting lectures as far as math goes. The homework is useless, but that's because of the stupid calc packets we have to use.

Hands down one of the greatest professors I have had yet. She took a genuine interest in the success of her students, had a fair grading system, was always willing to answer questions in and out of class, and was very approachable. She teaches well, and is open to student feedback on her teaching. I would absolutely recommend her.

Julie is awesome, but not the greatest lecturer. Lectures were scattered and sometimes unclear. In all, I went to about half of the lectures, and read about the course material in my old Thomas Calculus textbook- this was sufficient to earn an A. Grading system is generous, and Prof. Mitchell has fair expectations. Highly recommend.

Her tests were really basic if you know all the stuff. However, she is really poor at lecturing. Basically, she just threw formulas and did not do any proof at all. The content is really unclear to me. I learnt almost all stuff online or discussion. If you want to receive an easy A, take her class. But if you want to really learnsomething, do not.

Her lectures were essentially useless. Most of what I learned came from discussion, and everything else online. The tests were alright, the homework assignments were very hard.

Julie is a nice lady, but not much of a lecturer. She tends to make many mistakes and her lectures get hard to follow. She is very willing to correct herself and rework through problems, however. TAs more or less make or break your grade, however. Attend review sessions, because test questions are very similar to them.

I learn nothing from her lectures; she is kind of all over the place, and the lectures are far ahead of your homework or discussion section. Theres no textbook - just a "notes" packet. All my learning comes from discussion, if you have her, you absolutely need a good TA. She does not help me understand the subject really at all.

She clearly knows the subject very well but the lectures are scattered and hard to follow. She tries to show the interesting sides of the subject but they often don't totally connect to the material and take away time that could be used to better explain the material.

Prof Mitchell started off very cluttered and disorganized in her lectures leaving the majority of the class hopelessly confused. Then, we had to take a quiz for her to see how we were doing, and she changed her lectures accordingly. Ever since, the class has been clear. The quizzes are hard, but manageable. Exams are decent and we get a note sheet.

Her lectures are a bit scattered, though she will walk through a problem if it is not clear enough. The main problem is that the text, her lectures, and discussions all use different ways to word certain problems. Makes it unnecessarily confusing when a homework is worded differently than the tests, and tests are different than the quizzes.

Her lectures are very scattered and sometimes it gets confusing. She knows what she is talking about, but doesn't always teach concepts in the best way.

Very helpful and always cheering us on. I've had so much support from a professor.Lectures were sometimes scattered, but always went through example problems. Best math professor I have had yeT1

Thank you Prof. Mitchell. Doing class project was very helpful to me !!!!!

I liked this class a lot. The computer simulations were really helpful!

Not suitable for Graduate level teaching

I was not sure about this class at first but in the end I enjoyed it. I don't know what the poster who said it was middle school level is talking about - I've never seen most of this stuff before!! The exams were reasonable, and Prof Mitchell always posts your score the same day.

I think she's very fair and tries to do a good job. The expectations for exams were very clear, and she's helpful if you go to office hours. She's younger, so her lecture style could be a little more organized, but I'm sure when I become a teacher I'll find out that it's hard sometimes to keep a room of students from being bored or confused.

I liked this class a lot, in that I learned things I have never seen in any other math course. The professor is very helpful and seems to care about the students, unlike some other teachers I had here.

To be really honest, I consider this class' material and the way it is taught by Julie is like math/geometry in middle school. This is not a university course. This is supposed to be a middle school course. If you really want to learn geometry, DON'T take it with her. If you want to get an easy A, please do so (and be warned, you won't learn much)

One of the better math profs, for sure. She's good at telling when the class is confused or bored, and adjusts the pace. Considering that she was assigned to the course unexpectedly (other prof hit by car) and had to throw it all together never having taught the course before, I'm thinking she did a really great job!!!

Great professor. Not an easy course, but well worth the effort.

I was not excited about this class at first, but after having Julie Mitchell, I enjoy geometry so much more. She is a very good lecturer and stops to make sure her students understand. She is also very fair and understanding. I would definitely recomend her and take a class of hers in the future.

She was really easy to talk to and her classes were very clear and organized. Her class was very challenging, but rewarding in the end. I really learned a lot from her.

I wish she had taught 222. She was way better than the prof I have now.

This was a pretty decent class overall. I liked being able to do problems in class, and some of the computer demos were cool.

She was not only boring, but she taught calc to us the most unconventional way. She taught the class like everyone taking it was 3 years old....so if you want slow paced, pathetically boring classes...take this.

Thank you prof mitchell!! now that i'm in calc 222 and have something to compare her to, i think she is an excellent excellent prof! (at least compared to prof beck. he sucks for 222. never take him) tests were pretty decent, most from homework. take her!!

Didn't appreciate it at the time, but she is pretty damn good. She can be annoying at times, but she is a good teacher. Tests were fairly hard... heavy studying required.

Very good teacher, she has a very good style of teaching math. Tests are pretty easy and straightforward.

She was a great professor! I hear about so many of the horrible calc teachers, and she really makes calc easy. She is very fair and so are the tests. If you know the material you will do good. Also, she never tries to trick you. I really enjoyed her.

very good

One of the better calc profs, definitely. Her exams are easy- if you study. She works thru problems w/ the class, which can be helpful. Can be short-tempered, but it doesn't affect the class much.

One of the best calc profs.

Tests aren't that bad. makes them seem harder than actually are. not a bad teacher, but has a lack of patience sometimes. Justifiably gets mad when people are talking.Always willing to re-explain things. Gives nice shortcuts. One of the better calc profs
