This class honestly is not that hard at all, anyone complaining has never taken a real math class. Prof. Miller is not the best lecturer but if you attend every lecture you should be fine (lectures are not recorded). Tests are the same every year basically, and you are provided old tests, so if you take those you should be fine.
honestly he wasn't as bad as people are making him out to be. you dont even have to go to lectures and can essentially teach yourself on youtube. tests are easy and are basically the same every year
although attendance isn't taken, you basically have to go to lecture every time to get the notes, bc he doesn't post any videos or slides. He just says to "read the book" if you miss. He wrote on the chalkboard for notes and would erase as he went so get ready to take pics. Tip: Do lots of previous exams to study and you should be fine.
I don't show up to lectures a lot for I took A level maths. Lectures seem fast and unclear, but he answers emails and piazza questions quickly. Spend time doing past papers and practice exams to study for the exams even when you think you've learned everything, for they weigh a lot and even a small mistake can result large change in grade.
Overall I think Math 222 is hard and Professor Miller doesn't make it better. Not the best at explaining and you really have to learn most things on your own. If you didn't do well in Calc 1 or 221, get ready to work hard
This professor was one of the worst! He used profanity in class and also speaks so fast that it's impossible to understand what he's saying. He sometimes goes from one idea to another to another in a matter of 10 seconds and it seems like he himself is so confused about the content, so how will he explain it properly to students?!
His humor is hit or miss. I liked him, but I also enjoy math. For those who don't love math this professor might not be for you.
Good and smart professor. But his handwriting is a little hard to read. He also shares his notes. HWs are of proper amount and exams are a little hard but that is linear algebra. If you really work for it, it wont be quite an issue, especially for the final.
Miller is the worst teacher I've ever had. It's obvious that he does not care for the grades of his students. He's also awkward and does not know how to answer specific questions. The class in general is very hard, with 84% of your grade from 2 midterms and a final. If you HAVE to take this class, avoid taking it with him.
There isn't much homework, and there is a textbook, but doesn't really need to be used unless you want to check something. Joe explains things quite well, and always stops to answer questions, even if he doesn't see them at first.
Joe is way too smart to be teaching this class. He often will rush through material so you need to be listening intently to understand what he's saying. He also often goes on tangents about math that is irrelevant to the course. You will have to study a lot for the exams, they can cover a wide variety of things.
Joe is a good man. He is very caring for the students, especially during the pandemic. However, his lectures were horrible. He speaks so quickly that students cannot follow the class materials. Also, his notes were useless since his handwriting is awful.
Horrible, does he really know what he is talking about? Plenty of mistakes during course and never really answers the question, only tries to sneak through and pretend he has addressed the question, where the fact being not explaining any thing.
He explain the material well and give several examples, helping student to understand. Not much homework. He is a good professor.
Joe really knows his stuff, but he is a horrible professor. He expects 1st semester calc students to understand math like he does. He doesn't let you use a notecard on exams, but the exams aren't that horrible. I would try and take 221 with another professor.
Joe only taught half of the semester, but his lectures are terrible. He talks in circles and often doesn't seem to know what he is talking about. The exams are often difficult. Avoid him if you can.
His lectures were unhelpful. He went on about information that only confused us more. He didn't explicitly explain problems, but went around them
Lectures are absolutely no help. You can honestly skip every class and just teach yourself by reading the textbook and go to discussion to turn in homework.
Avoid. Avoid like the plague. He doesn't want to teach and therefore is not a great teacher. He made first semester calc way harder than it needed to be.
Thought this would be my blow-off class this semester, ha NO. Miller should not be teaching first semester calculus; he does not know how to communicate ideas effectively. Students do not understand lecture and attendance drops dramatically a few weeks after the semester's start. Had to join the Tutorial Program because I only took precalc in HS.
Does not explain concepts and jumps into examples without completely explaining material. Assumes the class knows more than it does. Not recommended
Poor teaching skills
I enjoyed his lectures-he explained the basic concepts and was quite enthusiastic. However, I would have enjoyed doing more examples, as the homework was graded and extremely difficult. The exams were difficult, but certainly doable if you put the effort in (which is a lot, by the way). I can't blame him personally because the material was tough.
The hardest professor i have ever taken in Math department. He enjoys in his own life. The homework is pretty hard. And homework will be collected and graded. The examples in class and textbook is not that helpful.
I would argue that Joe Miller is of the best professors in UW's math department. His lectures are always very well-prepared and structured. They moved at a comfortable pace and were almost relaxing. Always helpful in emails and during office hours, and presents lots of applicable examples during lecture. Sense of humor helped to keep class moving.
he is one of the greatest professors i have ever had
His lectures are helpful at times; does too simple of examples, but goes into detail a lot of things. His exams will test your conceptual knowledge of theorems, but at this high level math, you should probably know that by now.
Just get above average, the curve helps. We used the Thomas' calculus 11th ed, so the full solution manual helped.
One of the better maths professor I have had. Recommend very much.
Dr. Miller makes calc 222 interesting! His lectures are well-organized and he explains everything very clearly. Also, you have to love the fact that he makes fun of himself while lecturing. His exams are a little hard, but overall he is a great professor!
Joe Miller is the worst professor you will ever have for math. His lecture is for the most part pointless and his tests have zero relation to what he teaches
Calculus sucks, but Joe Miller is awesome. His lectures are very organized and understandable. Everyone complains about 217 but only because everyone is coming right out of 171 which is easy and they expect 217 to be the same. It's a lot harder. Miller provides practice exams WITH solutions and tells you what to expect. Take him! I am so glad I did
