This was my second time in an honors seminar with Jonathan and I hope it won't be the last. Such a fun and interesting class that I always looked forward to attending. I also really enjoyed digging into some of the more dense scholarship that we looked at. Fair grading, 2 presentations, and choice between 2 shorter or 1 longer paper. Great guy!
At the end of the semester, he encouraged us all the stay smart and nerdy, which really sums up the class. We would just talk about movies the whole time, and the readings were not necessary for the discussion. I wish there were more theory, but that's because I am, in fact, a nerd. Legit so funny and I could tell he liked listening to our ideas.
There are weekly quizzes and online modules you must complete that take a while to get done. There are a lot of readings every week as well. The grading from the TA is kind of odd because even if you follow the rubric back to back they will still try to find ways to give you unnecessary points off.
CA250 is the best class I've taken! His lectures are engaging, content goes into a lot of depth, and you have a lot of autonomy when it comes to the essays. The only downside is you have to rent media occasionally for assignments and the peer reviews aren't very helpful. You can easily an A if you like writing and are passionate about media.
Professor Gray on his own is fine. He's a funny guy who is good at relating his material to real life. HOWEVER if you get a bad TA for this class you are in trouble. The online modules do a better job at teaching than lectures, and the papers cover very difficult prompts. Attendance for discussion is mandatory. Wouldn't recommend for humanities.
auditory prof w/ only images on slides, which makes things hard for a visual learner & goes quite quick. small writing assignments (3), two papers, and a final exam, accompanied with LOTS of reading that is used on the weekly quizzes. he's overall good, just takes some getting used to. helps understand how media have roles in today's day and age
I actually enjoyed Professor Gray and CA250. The quizzes are fairly easy and the papers have pretty clear directions. Applying the different topics covered to movies I like make papers pretty easy to write, even if you're writing them the day they're due.
I liked Professor Gray as a teacher, but this class is so unnecessarily difficult for no reason. I'm only taking it to satisfy my humanities credit, and I wish I hadn't. It's quite a bit of work, and it's close to impossible to get good scores on writing assignments and papers.
I was not the biggest fan of the class itself. It was a very surface level class and not too challenging. My gripes aside, I love Professor Gray. He is a neat dude and makes learning the surface level material quite fun. The class is a lot of work but it's a good screening to see if you're ready for other Com Arts classes.
Professor Gray is a fantastic lecturer. He's incredibly knowledgeable in his field and makes it seem effortless as he transitions from topic to topic. I had him for 250, which wasn't "amazing," but it's alright. You wouldn't regret taking it, and it's a requisite for either Communication majors. Otherwise, Gray is a wonderful professor.
This class itself is not the most entertaining and most of the material consists of things you probably won't care about but professor gray didn't really do too much to make this better. The assignments were graded very nit-picky and the structure of the class does not encourage you to constantly remember information that will be on the final,
This class could've been great. However, the structure of the class did nothing to encourage the actual retention of information. The papers were largely disconnected from lecture and graded extremely harshly for an intro class. The online lessons and lectures seemed redundant. The final exam was ridiculous given how the semester was structured.
Jonathan was great! His experience of living around the world gave him a unique perspective on the material which made class much more interesting! He's very funny and interjects humor into a lot of his lectures which is refreshing! The material is a bit elementary but he makes you think about it in engaging and interesting ways! Make sure to talk!
Good communicator. Attend the classes, and the tests should not be that difficult, but the essays are a little bit more of a problem. Discussions are not that helpful, but attendance is retired. Having said that, Professor Gray did a good job, and I enjoyed this class.
The midterm and final exam were easy. If you have a vague knowledge of the readings you will do fine. Professor Gray's lectures are interesting, but take notes because no slides. However, the TAs can be very hard graders for the papers. I like to think of myself as a good writer, but my TA told me I had bad grammar and I got Bs on both.
Horrible class! The readings are long and unbearable and there's a million on them! He writes about nothing on the slides so if what he says is confusing then you're SOL Also if you miss class you're out of luck because he doesn't post power points (not like it would help). The papers are graded too hard for the class and there's no curve or EC.
Not a bad or very difficult class, but the structure of the class needs work. Gray does not put any lecture slides online, even though it wouldn't help because all they have are pictures. It makes it hard to study for the exams if we can't revert back to information missed. Also, papers are graded tough for this level of a class.
I absolutely loved this professor! super engaging lectures, very funny, always really helpful in office hours. There's lots of reading, but as long as you dont fall behind you should be fine. I'm honestly kinda sad that the class is over :(
Amazing, amazing professor. Really cares about the subject, and it shows. The TAs are also great! Slides usually only have pictures and quotes, so you have to listen to what he is saying, which is fine because it is super interesting! Nice, down-to-earth guy who is approachable and funny.
Honestly loved this class, I hate missing lectures just because having a class this small with such an amazing professor was well worth it. There's always a fun discussion, you feel included, and he's really fun. Expect witty jokes, a few f bombs, and to laugh. Honestly TAKE THIS CLASS!
Definitely my favorite professor I've had so far! :) Listening to him is super easy and interesting, and he makes the material super easy to learn! (with hilarious videos to go with) and super friendly and helpful if you go to his office hours, not at all intimidating! Helped make my decision to change my major!
Subject matter isn't too difficult because a lot is common sense. Get ready for a ton of memorization for the midterm, but a pretty easy final. Funny examples from current media like Key and Peele on comedy central is a bonus!
Powerpoints only contain pictures yet both tests require definingunderstanding the few hundred terms he provides that we should be listening for in lecture. I felt that I had to type up everything he said with no clear indicator of what was important and what was not. Readings are long and only mildly related to lecture but important for papers
He clearly knows a lot about the subject, just not how to teach it. The criteria he looks for in the 3 papers is vague. I would not recommend this class.
Gray was a decent professor. Some lectures tended to be very dry, but overall was a good basic com arts class. Only one midterm, 2 papers, and the final is only on the material after the midterm. A fair amount of reading, but an easy and interesting class.
He does not know how to lecture. It's an interesting class with interesting material but the way he presents it is the least effective form.
He's amazing. First teacher to actually inspire me since I've started school here.
A generally entertaining and enjoyable professor. His lectures were informative, but not boring. Pulls in some good media examples (video clips, etc.) that really help to illustrate his points. An overall wonderful class. I'd highly recommend it.
Gray was a really great professor. He was interested in the topics and therefore made it interesting to learn about them. Sometimes he seems a bit cocky, or too artsy with his descriptions, but overall I learned a lot from him.
Gray is a great professor. His lectures were super interesting and well organized, and he has a cool accent which helps. Make sure to attend lecture, because he don't post anything online. Exams were difficult but fair, mostly multiple choice and short answer. I would totally recommend taking this class!
Really smart dude when it comes to media. He wrote the book for the class, so he knows what he's talking about. Lectures were interesting!
He is awesome! Loved his class, very interesting lectures. It was challenging, but fun. Attending lecture is pretty important, but he's fun so nbd. He made you work for your grade, but I would take another class from him in a heart beat.
