People saying they don't like Dr. Roll don't belong in an advanced Micro lab. He is definitely disorganized, but insanely educated and helps students get to where they need to be. Treats students like real scientists, and actually prepares you for doing lab work. If you are a competent student that can problem solve, you will have no issues.

Very nice person but an awful professor. Always joking around; caring for students but demanding in grading. Quiz is impossible to study as it's focused on minutiae. MAKE SURE you understand micromath at the start of the semester! Lab manual is super confusing, and some labs require out of class measurement. Btw he once forgot his own appointment.

DO NOT take this awful professor, he never is prepared with his class, last minute finishes his planning. Grading is absolutely ridiculous, takes forever to grade. Doesn't seem to want you to do well in course, condescending and will make you want to give up the whole semester. Just actually worst professor in microbiology department.

Dr. Roll's assignments lack clear and comprehensive grading criteria, comments, and explanations, so it's easy to lose points in unexpected and incomprehensible ways, and difficult to modify. When you ask him questions, his answers are likely inconsistent, which is unprofessional. This will undoubtedly put a bad spin on your overall semester.

There was no syllabus for the class. The feedback he gave was practically useless. Avoid this guy unless you hate yourself

As a person, Jon is a funny and entertaining guy. As a professor, he's incredibly frustrating. His spur-of-the-moment teaching style makes for a disorganized classroom. Needless downtime was common. This bleeds into his grading, making it incredibly difficult to anticipate what he wants from you. The sparse feedback he gives is rarely helpful.

his lab is too unorganized. he has no plan for anything. he made up the rubric the day before the assignments are due.

This was one of the most poorly structured classes I have ever taken. Every assignment was tailored for you to lose points. You would be able to learn everything that is done in this class and more if you get a research position at any lab that does bench work. It is insane to me how I got a better grade in Organic Chemistry Lab than in this class.

Professor Roll was extremely funny and always made class interesting. I will say that he would often go off on a tangent about things unrelated to class material but that is really the only negative I can think of. Classes were always fun and he made an effort to get to know each of us. I would highly recommend taking a class with professor Roll.

The grading was by far the worst part of this class. It seems like Dr. Roll specifically designed this class to make students lose points. Exams are unnecessarily nitpicky and there are either no rubrics given for papers or they are completely unusable. Your grade will suffer if you take a class with Dr. Roll.

Although he was pretty nice most of the time, he could also be super condescending and flat out rude. The labs were pretty easy, but the exams had pretty low averages and the pre-lab quizzes were way too difficult for the material. If you can take the class with another professor, definitely do it, but it's not the end of the world.

One of my favorite classes I've taken so far. Assignments are easy and straight forward, but exams can be weirdly specific. He does his best to keep the labs interesting with stories and examples, and offers a lot of ways to make up for a poor score here or there with redos, extra credit, or even attend another section if you missed yours.

The absolute worst, most condescending and narcissistic professor I've ever had. If you have the choice to NOT take his class, DON'T. He is awful. I have never had a teacher disrespect and patronize me as much as he did. He takes every chance he gets to make you feel stupid. He is the true definition of a gas lighter. Ur welcome for the warning ;)

THE BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD! Words cannot describe how great of professor he is! Genuinely cares about his students and their success. Will go above and beyond to help you! He made a stressful class fun and upbeat! There aren't words to describe how cool he was! TAKE THIS LAB! :) (He also understands that a LITERAL PANDEMIC IS HAPPENING!)

Dr Roll is the best! I really enjoyed micro 102!

Dr. Roll was available to meet virtually to make sure I did what I needed to do to pass. There's no grading rubric until after you turn in the assignment and takes WEEKS before you get your grade back. Feedback was harsh and unhelpful. Tough exams. In-person labs were ok, most times I didn't feel like I was receiving much help. Be independent.

Jon is very passionate and informal in his teaching, but he is also EXTREMELY disorganized, and the transition to online learning was harsh. Some questions on the final were not visible due to formatting errors with images, and feedback on assignments is vague. Labs themselves are not too difficult, but I'd recommend looking for a different prof.

Jon is incredibly condescending and acts like he is superior to every student. He will never admit he is wrong and does not explain the material well. The class is horribly unorganized and the instructors don't manage time wisely. It takes weeks before any assignment is graded. The exams are nitpicky and unnecessarily difficult thanks to Jon.

Jon is a great professor. Even though it can be a bit unorganized, he's makes a huge effort to be transparent with students. He made time to go through an entire lab experiment with me. He's hilarious and knowledgeable. His criticism may be unclear at times but he's still pretty fair about grading. He gets better the more classes you take of his.

Extremely unclear grading material. Acts like he is superior in all ways. He will never admit he is wrong, even if he IS. For instance, everyone in the class got something wrong on the exam due to unclear wording, but he told us we were all in the wrong... Treats students rather disrespectfully as his inferiors. Pointless class. Avoid if possible.

Extremely unorganized!! Takes months before handing back assignments so it's difficult to figure out what he wants on assignments. Quizzes are difficult to study for because he's unclear about what material will be on the quiz. Grading scheme is very unclear, and virtually no feedback is given on any graded assignment. Overall I would not recommend

I think Jon is really helpful. I'm the type of person to bombard professors with questions and never once did he grow impatient. Overall, he has a great sense of humor and is very approachable if you have questions, which was very helpful. Additionally, he did a great job preparing the class for exams and would clearly emphasize what was important.

He is the best teacher ever. He is really easy to talk to and willing to spend time with students. He explains the lab well as long as you pay enough attention. If anything goes wrong, just tell him; he won't judge you or anything; he is always there to help you

Definitely recommend taking 304 with him! Jon cares a lot about students; if you ever have a question, just ask him; he is really easy to approach. He also likes talking to students, which is nice! I like how he always tell stories in class to keep class interesting. Also he explaining 304 material really clear. The class is fun as well!

He is very charismatic, but lectures are not organized. He says he stars the questions you need to know... not true. I'm not convinced I learned much. The curve is generous though.

Really disorganized and teaches whatever he wants to. No real logic or flow to the class. Basically have to memorize all the lecture slides.

Jon teaches many micro labs/classes. He is a wonderful and very enthusiastic teacher and really engages students. His classes are typically easy if you have an interest in BacT. Great guy and a great teacher. Note: Jon is not always the most organized guys ever and at first it can be frustrating, just know that there is method to his madness

Super nice guy. Relates with his students well and is always willing to help. Sometimes expectations aren't really clear though. We had to deal with inconsistencies as well. The TAs are really the ones responsible for lecturing and grading though. Three exams, 2 lab reports, no final, a few assignments.

Great guy. Very helpful but definitely needs to be asked to clarify things. This class really depends on the TA you have but overall its not too bad.

Jon connects well with students and conveys a true understanding of the materials and methods utilized in microbiology laboratories. Highly recommended.

Extremely nice guy who is very willing to explain things more than once to make sure you understand.

I had an incredibly high interest level before this class. Now I don't. There is no grading scheme. Its more of an ongoing independent project. I go to class to learn from the professor, not do my own independent research. I already do that at my lab, I don't need to do another one. Sh*t class take if you want to mess your GPA up.

Great class and Roll is awesome. He is easy going and approachable. Answers any lab questions you have and is always available to help out. Great professor!
