Hall is a very good professor. He knows a lot and cares about students just as much. His lectures are interesting and the humor he injects every once in a while makes students feel at ease. This shouldn't be understated considering his mightily intimidating resume. I recommend taking his honors section--learn as much as you can from him!

Professor Hall's lectures are cool, the content is very interesting, and I leaned a ton from this class. Definitely sign up for his honors discussion, its worth it. However, he is an extremely tough grader; I put a lot of time and effort into my term paper and he said my work was gross in his feedback, I didn't like that very much.

If you don't enjoy history take this class. He cares about what he teaches and used to do it for some of the most important military figures in the country. If you take this class you won't regret it. Always ask questions and you may learn something new. He is willing to talk theoretical questions about the topic while engaging in good conversation

Amazing professor! Super knowledgable about the topics being taught! I had him for history 354 and he was extremely fun to take a class with! very understanding of student's needs and works to connect with them on the topics! Would recommend!

A very good speaker. John gives crisp lectures that are engaging and interjected with humor so that I never dozed off near the end. Assigned reading are interesting and well-balanced. John has a more than adequate knowledge of the subject matter and a surprisingly balanced viewpoint considering his military background. Great class for a non-major.

Prof. Hall is an amazing professor. His lectures are very interesting and he is very nice and always willing to talk with you outside of class. There is a lot of reading, around 30 pages per night, but the books are pretty good and relevant to the class. Even though I am not a history major, this was my favorite class this semester.

Professor Hall is an amazing teacher. His class is one of the hardest I have taken as a history major, but is easily one of the best college courses I have ever taken. You have to read about 60 pages a day, but if you will come out of that course knowing a lot more than when you went in. If you are a lover of history this course is a must.

John Hall is an amazing professor and extremely knowledgeable about the topic. As a history major, this was one of my favorite courses, and even though my breadth is European, Hall rocked out hard. A great guy, too, very approachable and helpful despite how severe he looks. Wish I could have taken 427, but I am graduating. You must attend lecture

Professor Hall is fantastic. He is so knowledgeable and makes the subject really interesting and his lectures are always engaging. Do not take for an easy Humanities credit however. Reading is required and there is A LOT OF READING. Quizzes in discussion over reading. All exams are take home essays - graded by the TA. Maggie Flamingo is a good TA!!

He really knows his stuff - very eloquent, great professor, great guy. Class is difficult, or was for me, but worth it. A lot of reading, writing. He does expect the best, but is one of the most interesting professors I've had. I got a B in the course, and worked fairly hard.

John Hall is a tremendous asset to the University. His syllabus outlines a course based on lecture, reading, and discussion components. Students who neglect any will be disappointed with their grade. Hands-down the best course I've ever taken at UW. Bring your writing skills!

The man is brilliant: eloquent, insightful, rigorous, grim and funny. Expect to work very hard. It will be worth your while. It is possible to do okay in the course without attending every class, but you will miss out. His lectures are pretty much works of art.

Dr. Hall is an amazing lecturer, but it's nearly impossible to take organized notes because he has no real outline. Readings and writing requirements will kick your butt. This class is difficult, because Dr. Hall expects excellence, but it will push you to be the best student you've ever been.

This class will kick your butt, but worth it. Required to read about 60 pages per day. Essays are difficult at best. You get out of this class what you put in. Don't take as a blow off.

awesome professor. really knows his stuff. do all of the readings or lecture will kick your ass, go to ALL lectures! lecture passes by fast because he gets your interest from the start. pretty funny as well
