Great professor, you just have to turn up to lecture to really understand the class.
He is one of the worst ME professors that we have. He clearly isn't very comfortable with the content and it shows in lecture. On top of that he demands no respect from students, and people belittled him on Piazza because of it. Unclear formatting, inconsistency, not good all around.
I never review professors, but I needed to make an exception for this absolute gem. He is sporadic and indecisive, making changes to exam formats with no warning. He claims to not know the amount of time that goes into the homework and decided to raise grade boundaries because he felt that grades for his class were too high. Worst prof in MechE.
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I usually never write anything in this website but holly this is the worst professor I have ever had to encounter in my whole life. my guy does NOT know what is going on, sometimes it felt like us the students knew much more than him and would fix his grading or rubric. I took two classes with him and he doesn't know what he's doing.
He has to be the absolute worst professor I have ever had. It genuinly seems like he is a student with his basis of knowledge on the things he ATTEMPTS to teach. You are left bored, confused, and frusturated at the end of your time at lectures. Gave us an exam worth 24 points where missing a signage would drop you 5%. Absolutely horrible.
Lectures not mandatory but crucial to understand content. Go to all of his lectures and use his review materials and you'll pass with flying colors. Oakley is underrated for sure. He is also really kind and learns everyone's names by the end of the semester. Textbook is McGraw Hill - pretty normal stuff.
Beautiful, intelligent, game changing. These are words I would use to describe Jason Oakley. I felt like an angel came down from heaven whenever I went to his class. Although I sat in cramped wooden seats, I felt like a roman being hand fed grapes basking in the sun whenever I heard his voice. 10/10 would recommend if you want a god-like experience
Not a good lecturer. I suggest avoiding him if at all possible. Struggles to convey concepts in a clear and concise manner.
Very bad professor in general. The lectures will be useless and a waste of your time if you show up. I had several projects mis-graded that he refused to fix.
bum (extra characters to meet the limit)
Professor Oakley is a living legend. His lectures are like a masterclass in both brilliance and charisma, making even the most complex engineering concepts feel like pure magic. He doesn't just teach—he transforms students into future innovators. His office hours? More like sessions with a guru who imparts wisdom that changes your life.
This guy is the worst professor. There is a clear lack of preparation that goes into his instruction. He probably doesn't use SolidWorks and MATLAB on a regular basis for his actual work which is incredibly noticeable during lectures to students who have become proficient in the platforms through internships.
Jason Oakley did not teach the necessary material to succeed in the course. Very dry, non-informative lectures. I had to learn everything from my TA during lab sections.
very boring
He is passionate about what he is teaching, that's for sure. Just isn't the best teacher. His grading criteria is also not clear at all.
Jason Oakley didn't understand the material he was teaching, the lectures for this course have little to nothing to do with the graded work you will be assigned, and what is taught is entirely off topic. Your lab and your TA will be this entire class for you. Show up to lab and the course is a piece of cake, the TA's are wildly more helpful.
Terrible. Avoid He should find a new calling.
Probably the most confusing grading I've ever had. He gives you examples for the homework which dont meet the grading rubric and makes mistakes all over the rubrics and homework instructions. Lecture is absolutely useless so the class is essentially just figuring out the homework yourself and attending lab.
He just did not know what he was teaching and what he should teach.
I've had Jason in multiple classes, and can safely say his lectures are some of the most useless lectures I've been to. I've seen him read off of the textbook in class, and answer valid questions with "I just showed you that". His lectures and homework assignments are riddled with substantial mistakes that make it very frustrating to learn from him
Not as terrible as a lot of people say. His lectures definitely aren't helpful, but you don't have to go and the class isn't hard compared to other ME classes. The homework is long but TAs are helpful and most of us who stay for lab get it almost done during class. His exams were reasonable and open note. Most people I know are hovering around AB-A
He demonstrates passion and enthusiastic during his lectures. The impeccable lecture layout clearly articulates complex ideas. Students are always waiting to see what wisdom and knowledge he will bless us with today. His careful planning and attention to small details makes sure every homework is fine tuned to absolute perfection for his students.
Jason Oakley has a way with words. His ability to give a thorough and thoughtful breakdown of concepts is unmatched. I go into class knowing nothing, but when I leave I feel a sense of euphoria. The only reason I wouldn't take the class again is because he did such a good job teaching the material, won't need to. I can see why he's employed.
It was guaranteed in every lecture that you would either be more confused by the concept or he would not explain the topic at all and then expect you to do homework and exams on the topics he was unable to teach. Had to learn the entire class from one student who had prior knowledge. Received one star only because I cant put zero.
It is probably better to just read the text book and show up for quizzes and tests because all Oakley does is take the equations from the textbook and write them on the board. He jumps around, adds things randomly, explains things unclearly and has no grasp of what his own homework is about.
This is the only Rate my Professor review I have ever given because he was that bad. He took over teaching our class for the last 3 weeks of the semester and switched the entire curriculum. He then proceeded to not show up to our final exam. He never sent an explanation or an apology. Just a complete ghost. I have never had a worse experience.
He didn't show up for our FINAL. How does that happen.
He is really thoughtful and caring his students a lot. Great explanation and exams are fair.
This professor's lectures are absolutely useless, and he makes many mistakes in lecture. He does not offer any resources to practice for the exams, nor is he clear about his grading rubric and takes off points for seemingly no reason. He doesn't hand back exams so students can improve and when help is requested he refuses to offer it. 0/10.
He isn't a bad person but he isn't the best teacher. He can be very monotone when teaching low level courses like ME231 but he does enough to get the point across. I felt confident in my learning throughout the course. If you are willing to put time into lab assignments you will be fine grade-wise.
The class isn't very hard but he is not a very helpful professor and is very boring as well. Try to get ahead or keep up because if you get behind it is hard to catch up because things start to pile on very quickly. Overall, the class is pretty easy.
One of the least passionate professors. Skips class without alerting his students. Gets frustrated when students ask genuine questions. Lectures where he does show up are a useless hour of students watching him do Solidworks. Possibly better for other classes, but not great for ME 231.
Absolute snooze
Literally worst class I have taken to date. Zero guidance whatsoever and expects students to be experts at solidworks and whatever the h3ll the on paper assignments are supposed to be. Absolutely terrible feedback no rhyme or reason to anything and it is almost impossible to not get docked like 5 points on each assignment just because. Terrible.
Has no passion teaching lower level courses. Teaches SolidWorks Concepts but not how to make parts in SolidWorks. This is the part most students get caught on. Overheard him telling a student who took 5 hours to complete the first assignment that he needs to get better at SolidWorks and maybe the course isn't for him.
Jason Oakley was an alright professor. His exams were worded weird in order to, I feel, trick students. His lectures are incredibly boring most of the time since the material is 20 years outdated at best. He seemed like a genuine guy who cares for engineering. He did completely miss 2 lectures with no warning though, so maybe you'll get lucky.
Worst engineering professor I have had yet. Lacks passion to teach the subject and it shows since it seems like no one is paying attention in lecture.
He's pretty dry. The lectures aren't always relevant to the material. He seems like a nice enough guy, but his lectures are not very interesting and he says uhh so much it made my head hurt. He was a fair grader and test giver though. I feel for a harder class he might not be a great choice.
Oakley was really good professor for fluids. I found he did well with explaining the complicated subjects of the course. Office Hours everyday was a plus. Quizzes every week which is heavy but helps with the learning process. Our tests were the same for a different professor, our class scored consistently higher than the other class.
Oakley often would do example problems incorrectly in class, would not show up to classes and wouldn't tell any students he wasn't coming so we all sat and waited for him not to come, very boring lectures and exams would contain questions with little similarities to course content.
Professor Oakley may seem a little intimidating but he's a nice guy if you ask for help. He's very traditionalist in that all homework is handed in/hand graded which I really appreciated. The Solidworks assignments can take a LONG time even if you know Solidworks because you have to follow the textbook. Tests are pretty hard and worth 50%. He's ok!
Very boring lectures. The homework assigned is not reflective of what is on the exams. The exams are multiple-choice, random pieces of information, that are barely mentioned, if mentioned at all, in lecture. Because of this, the class lacks materials that are helpful for studying. High-grade distribution (94 for an A) and no curve.
Lectures were admittedly boring, but Prof. Oakley was very accommodating, clear, & made sure you had the tools to succeed. Try to make yourself focus during lectures and the class isn't that bad, but you can fall behind fast. He offered lots of office hours & gave extensions if you struggled with something. Not a very tough grader. I'd take again.
He wasn't great at lecturing but he isn't bad either. In general this is a pretty average class. However, some of the more difficult stuff is crammed together at the end of the course.
Mr. Oakley released the wrong final exam for our class (the exam he released was locked in November) which left 100+ students waiting around for 2 hours for ANY sort of update only time receive a new test in a time slot that the majority of students werent available for and he never really apologized or admitted an error on his part that.
Professor Oakley is fine but my TA helped me the most in this class. His SW assignments are fun, in my opinion. To learn the most from his class, I suggest getting a TA as your lab instructor.
Sometimes his lectures can feeling monotonous but that's the only negative I have. He is very clear on what he expects and actively tries to prepare you for those expectations. If you even put slight effort into the class, you'll be well on your way to understanding the material.
Reading and online homework due for every lecture, but you're allowed to see the answers and take them multiple times and they help you understand the material. Generally, I'd read the textbook, see examples in lecture, and practice via homework. Oakley was always very responsive and clear via email and office hours. Solid prof for Fluid Mech
Jason Oakley is really helpful in office hours, but he doesn't know the material. This class is taught in a really inefficient way. We needed to design a mechanism that will be 3D printed, but we didn't learn how to be successful. It's worth 15% of our grade. He doesn't accurately represent the tests with lectures or practice problems.
Plane awesome professor
The amount of homework he assigns is pretty ridiculous. However, you can find the answers online pretty easily. He writes really fast and therefore has bad handwriting. That's why I gave him a 2 for clarity. Not a horrible Professor but I wouldn't recommend him. Found it difficult to stay awake in class.
While poor at teaching the beginning of the semester, he conducted a mid-semester survey to gauge what areas he was lacking in. After that, his teaching ability went up dramatically and he switched from teaching mostly theory to mostly examples. For a new professor he did a pretty good job.
