He obviously enjoys his subject, his love for Anthropology is infectious. Profound and up to date knowledge, great lectures!
Super engaging and made class a fun time.
Professor Hawks is so sweet and really cares about what he's lecturing.
Prof is an excellent, engaging lecturer. If you pay attention in lecture, take notes, and read the readings, you should be able to earn a high grade with low workload each week. Assignments are weekly quizzes based on lecture and reading content. Reasonable, open-note. No exams. Excellent Bio credit.
I'm not an anthro major, but found the class interesting! You can definitely tell when a prof like him is actually passionate about the content. He doesn't read off of slideshows, but rather, gives a lot of verbal info to supplement the images/data given. He's also really big about accessibility and records all his lectures!
Attendance is taken for lab only while lectures can be viewed from videos that will be posted later in the week. Lectures are interesting! Dr. Hawks is an excellent professor that involves the audience with questions and does care about his students. The class is not hard, and you will pass easily as long as you do the readings assigned.
Went into the class with low expectations, but Professor Hawks was amazing. We have weekly canvas quizzes and mandatory discussions, but the work was always manageable and didn't take long. I came out of this class with a lot more knowledge about bio than I expected. Would recommend for nat-sci / bio credits!
Prof. Hawks was a great instructor for an intro to anthropology. He's basically world famous and really knows his stuff, and the content in lectures and labs is fascinating. I found the class itself pretty easy, but if archaeology and history aren't interesting to you, it may be harder. I didn't stress about this course at all, and it was fun!
love this professor. great guy. easy class because I didn't pay attention during lectures but still ended with an A.
His lectures are very good, but quiz accounts for too much of the total score, and it's not really easy.
This class is pretty easy and Professor Hawks is a great guy who cares about students and has somewhat interesting lectures. I wasn't a huge fan of the content of the course, but Professor Hawks made it as interesting as possible. The only gripe I have is that the main grade is based on 3 inquiry assignments that kind of suck. No Final though!
Take this class if you are looking for an easy bio course! Professor Hawks is so passionate about this subject that his excitement transfers to his students! Can't say that I will ever use the information again, but 105 was a great, easy course to fulfill a requirement. Reading can be heavy at times, but it is not all necessary to earn an A.
Very kind and knowledgeable prof.
Prof. Hawks has done amazing this semester. The lectures are so fun and easy to follow. The inquiry assignments are a bit tough; make sure you attend lab sections and you will totally be fine. My TA Sneha is also super helpful. Choose her section if she is still one of the TA next Fall. Overall an awesome gen ed class for bio credits.
This class is a very fun class if you need a lab requirement or biology credit. Make sure to attend discussions because you go over information you need for your 3 bigger assignments! Take this class if you need something fun and laid back to do!
Take this class if you need the credit. It is an easy A if you do the work. There are quizzes each week but they are open-note and 3 easy assignments if you go to discussion. The TA's are very helpful.
Super fun course and interesting labs that you really need to go to if you want to do well on the inquiry assignments. Assignment wise the course was okay, although sometimes the instructions for the inquiries are not quite clear, especially the new inquiry 2. Very knowledgeable guy and it was great getting to see how passionate he was on the topic
Prof. Hawks made learning fun and not overly complicated. This class is very low time commitment, but very interesting because Hawks shows a true passion for the topic and his research. He genuinely wants students to have a great time in his course which is easily lived up to. I also like that there are weekly quizzes in place of exams.
Professor Hawks is probably the most knowledgeable person I have ever met. He is a master of his field and the information he provides for the class accurately reflects this. The lectures are interesting and the projects are actually kinda fun. The weekly quizzes are very simple if you do the reading and pay attention. Take one of his classes!
Professor Hawks' lectures are always interesting, not only because of the content, but the way he teaches it. Anthro105 was a class I didn't dread going to early in the morning--I even looked forward to it. There's a quiz a week and three relatively simple projects, and the class is low stress. I definitely reccomend the course!
One of my favorite Anthro Professors! Such a nice guy and provides the content in such an enthusiastic way making it fun to learn again. Not too many assignments and not an overwhelming amount of content, take a class with him if you can!
Professor Hawks is by far the most caring professor I have ever had. Not only is he extremely kind and understanding, but he presents the material in such an enthusiastic way that makes it so much more exciting! I had such an awesome semester with him.
Professor Hawks is truly a legend
Hawks is my fav prof yet. Makes lectures engaging and fun. Easy class and really interesting material. Overall great person understanding and always smiling.
I love prof hawks so much!!! definitely the most caring prof I have ever had, he really wants his students to succeed and the class was pretty easy if you watched all of the lectures and listened to the material.
Amazing class and an amazing professor. He was extremely understanding with everything going on and was always there incase you needed anything. I would 10/10 recommend him. The class was easy quizzes each week and then 3 bigger assignments through out the semester that were based off labs, took some time, but were easy if you just put in work.
I honestly hate science, so I took this class instead of something like chemistry or bio. Despite the fact I found it extremely boring, Professor Hawks was really knowledgeable about the content and seems like he genuinely enjoys teaching. Nice guy, good teacher. No exams, weekly quizzes instead which was amazing.
John Hawks is an amazing professor with amazing lectures. He is a real gem and knows genetics and biological anthropology very well. He does care about his students and their progress. He quizzes every week and they are based on the weekly readings. There are 4 inquiry assignments that are based on labs. Do your work and you will get an A. Awesome
I really enjoyed being in Hawks' Anthro105 course. The material is really interesting and the class is easy. This class is a great way to learn new things without the stress of having to constantly study to get a good grade. Hawks is very fun and charismatic, and was a real anchor through the whole covid debacle.
Professor Hawks is amazing. An extremely interactive and kind lecturer who kept the classes extremely entertaining, engaging and fun even for someone who wasn't an Anthropology major. There are NO exams, only weekly quizzes and a few "inquiry" assignments that take a couple of hours to finish. An extremely easy A, and would definitely recommend it.
Really great lecturer and super interesting because he has done so much work in his field. Definitely take this for you bio credit if you are not a stem major. Also, no exams just weekly quizzes that are fairly straight forward. Overall, definitely recommend.
I am not a STEM major and took anthro 105 for gen ed credits, but the class was so interesting without being overly difficult. Grading is based mostly off online quizzes and some easy but long assignments. I would definitely recommend if you are looking for an low stress but interesting class!! Hawks is also super fun and passionate about anthro!!!
He is one of the greatest professor I had in college. He is so caring and inspirational. Although I took this class only for my bio credit, he still taught me a lot and showed care to us at this difficult virtual learning time. The workload is almost none for this class. JUST TAKE IT!
This was by far the easiest class I've ever taken in my life. As a non-STEM major, Anthro105 is the PERFECT class to take for gen ed credits. No midterms or finals, easy weekly quizzes that make up 50% of your grade. I personally didn't attend lecture often, or read anything and still got a solid A. Assignments very straight forward, Hawks is nice
Professor Hawks is great. I took Anthro 105 to get my Bioscience credit, and it was such a great decision. The content is interesting, and he cares more about a student's learning than meticulously testing them. There were weekly quizzes and about 4/5 homework assignments, but they were all pretty easy. The labs were interesting too.
Easy course but very interesting at same time. He is great at his lecture style.
I took this class as a gen-ed for science credits. If chemistry and biology are not your strengths I recommend this class. No exams, no textbooks. He posts the readings online and the three big assignments given are easy if you attend lab. There are weekly quizzes that cover the readings, lectures and lab. As long as you attend you'll get an A.
While anthropology is not super interesting to me, I enjoyed the class and learned a lot from it. Most of the quiz questions came right from his lectures, so it makes it easier if you go to class, but they can also be found online. If you put in the time to do the inquiry assignments they are an easy A. Overall a good, easy science class.
Very easy class for people who may not excel in science normally. Took this to cover a science gen-ed and it was super easy. Grading is based on online quizzes once a week (easy if you look over the material for 20 minutes prior to taking) and a few writing assignments. He genuinely cares about his students and makes the course interesting.
I thought Hawks was a great professor. If you go to lecture, and briefly study before every quiz you will get an A in the class. Lab is very straightforward, and if you do the minimal work expected, you will do well.
Some may dislike his teaching style because he likes to put students on the spot. I personally sat away from the aisles and was never really bothered. Grade is 200 pts from weekly quizzes and lab assignments. The labs are just looking at PDFs and bones. As long as you go to class and take good notes, you don't have to waste time with the readings.
The information was really interesting for this class, however, Professor Hawks grades this class completely on quizzes, a final project, 2 critical analysis, and discussion participation. Which only ends up being 200pts so every point counts. The quizzes are usually things that are details you miss and the papers you read are dense and boring.
Professor Hawks gives great lectures. He makes the material really interesting and sparks a lot of questions in your head.
No exams in this class, only weekly ten point quizzes. Quizzes are based on lecture and the book but I never read and got an A! Lecture videos are only posted online so attendance is only mandatory on days when quizzes are taken. Lectures are kind of boring but he has so much enthusiasm and puts so much effort into teaching!
John Hawks is one of the funniest & most easy going professors. His lectures are interesting & he sometimes demonstrates primate mobility & vocals--absolutely hilarious! He is so dedicated to his research & this discipline. He really knows his stuff. Projects & quizzes are easy if you pay attention in class. Take this class!
Favorite class and professor I've had at this university. Made me wan pursue more anthropology courses. Great lectures from a prominent passionate figure in his field. Also if you're in honors, take it for honors, my project is really cool. Attendance not recorded but weekly quizzes based on lecture from the previous class makes it required.
Took his online course and it was pretty easy. A lot of readings but totally doable. Weekly quizzes that are taken straight from the readings so as long as you do readings you will be fine and the readings are actually very interesting. He and TA were quick to reply to emails and his videos were a bit boring but I didn't mind because he's great!
Took this in summer of 2015. It was a pretty easy class. Since this was online, he posted all the materials and assignments on Learn@UW (no textbook required). His videos were professional and had a lot of variety. He and the TA answered questions on Piazza. This was just how an intro class taken for credit should be - a breeze!
Dr. Hawks clearly loves what he does and is well known and respected in his field. I don't think he's arrogant as some have suggested. I like his sense of humor and the way he engages the class. You should know that although the quizzes were online last semester I was told that is going to change in the future, if that's a deciding factor for you.
Prof. Hawks is really dedicated to his reserach, which caused him to be gone for several lectures. The class was really easy and he made the weekly quizzes easy as well. As long as you pay attention to the grading rubric for the lab inquiries you will get a good grade. However, the class is changing entirely next semester so if you are planning to take it next semester don't expect it to be as easy as it was!
The class was very easy because he recognized that many of the students were only taking the class to fulfill a biology credit. He made the course interesting though and I learned a good amount from it. I would recommend him.
The class is super interesting, and lectures aren't at all dense. Prof. Hawks definitely enjoys what he teaches and makes it entertaining. Take a few notes and you'll be fine. You only take 14 online quizzes for the whole semester and a couple lab reports.
Lectures are at times irrelevant to the quizzes that are posted. His power points are pretty boring and never have any information on the slides, other than graphs. Sometimes is difficult to pick up on what information is important. However, the labs are really short and easy.
Hawks is a good natured guy. If a bit arrogant, after what he's accomplished, he may have a right to be. He's gone a lot because he's doing anthro work overseas, which is cool. Lectures are dense but OK. Weekly 5 pt quiz & 4 (10 pts ea.) lab right ups are your total grade. Quizzes are poorly worded. Labs are easy and you get to study real bones!
After 8 weeks of disorganization, you might expect to get at least GRADES. But NO. After begging and begging, he only graded 1 project out of 4. There is absolutely no way you can know how well you are doing until the very last week. Also don't write too long he doesn't appreciate it. It keep me wondering if he cares about his students at all.
I audited his class, so I can't comment on the grading. I thought he was interesting and chose really good literature. I still read his blog, five years after auditing his class.
Never have I encountered a more arrogant professor in my entire academic career. Way too into himself, which would be tolerable if he was actually a good teacher. When he deigned to show up (sometimes he just sent documentaries in his stead) he shot down students and was just generally badly. Poorly organized; quizzes were useless.
TA's seem good at what they do, but can't salvage the terribly organized class. Grade is based on 15 quizzes, which little information is given out beforehand—including when they will be. This system purports to help students do well, but all it does it make it about the quizzes and not material. Lectures + labs don't correlate. avoid if you can.
I took this class because I heard it was an easy A but it is not. The entire semester is out of 105 points so every 5 point quiz is that much more important. Questions are super specific. You don't have midterms or a final to help boost your grade. He's really arrogant and posts hints about the quizzes on his twitter, but doesn't tell you.
Not a hard class, but it was very annoying how lectures were extremely pointless 80% of the time and quizzes had the most random topics. Lab was interesting and easy to get points. My TA was awesome. If you love anthropology as much as him maybe you'll like it.
Hawks is super full of himself and shows you lots of videos with his face. His quizes are on random stuff lots of times so you have to pay attention to little details and hope you don't miss any.
Only offered every other year. Cross-listed with Zoology, Psych, and Bio. Optional readings, optional lecture attendance, 14 blog posts, 30 comments, and a 3,000 word essay due at the end for an AB. Great papers get A's. Intriguing discussion, huge range of topics covered.
Weekly quiz (5pts) and in-class lab assignments (3pts) are the only grades you get. Quizzes are inconsistent; really hard to know what to study or look over before hand, and sometimes his questions are on something he mentioned once. He is pretty arrogant, but definitely likes what he does. DON"T follow him on twitter, he tweets every 5 seconds.
Lectures are different every time and you have a weekly lab that is beyond easy. Weekly quizzes are given on lectures and lab material. Grade is point based. You can tell he loves Anthropology!...maybe a little too much...
This class was pretty easy. Not too difficult to get an A. Lectures are different every time and rather interesting. We even watched a movie one or two times. No homework really, but there are quizzes that are easy but can be tricky
Not the usual teacher for this summer class (Neil Whitehead passed away this year), but he did a great job outlining the important aspects of ethnography, defining culture, and went more in depth than anthro 104. No textbook, provided online articles. Reading heaving, discussion heavy, small writing assignments, really interesting discussion.
The class itself is interesting, and fairly easy. The lectures are OK, and the labs are useless. The guy is quite full of himself. The course would be much better with a different professor.
John Hawks is one of the leading experts in his field, which is really cool and inspiring. This semester we watched a documentary that has't even been officially released yet because he was in it. The class, however, is sometimes difficult to follow because he doesn't 'dumb down' the material and the quizzes are random. No reading or hw though.
I have had Dr. Hawks for both an intro and an upper-level bio anthro course. For intro he's not the greatest professor; the way he teaches gets kind of confusing. For upper-levels, it's all discussion based and he makes you really interested in the material. Definitely take him for an upper Level class, nothing is ever graded really.
Professor Hawks used discussion as a means of teaching for most of the semester. Although he would shoot down our ideas, I think that he wanted to teach us how to think about concepts critically. It was extremely intellectually stimulating, but not a cake walk. We weren't assigned a text, instead we were given articles to read. Be sure to read.
I really loved this class, and Professor Hawks was partially the reason for that. He made lecture really interesting (if you are intrigued by biology and evolution as I am). The labs were not really necessary but the chance to handle bones and casts of fossils made it worthwhile. Tests varied from really easy to specific and hard, so know the info.
I was super excited for this class, but it ended up being a disappointment. He is hell-bent on embarrassing his students, shooting down every student answer to his questions in lecture. The exams are a terrible indication of how much you actually know and his lectures are so hard to take notes on. The labs are SUCH a waste of time.
He's a good teacher, generally keeps things interesting, and is pretty funny (if you like anthro jokes). Just beware of his ego!
He's really knowledgeable and the topics are interesting, but lecture and labs were totally all over the place. You could never really tell if what he was saying was just a side notes or if it was something for the test. A lot of test questions were random facts he mentioned in class and didn't necessarily seem important.
I was disgusted with how useless this class was. It's not hard, it'll just suck out your soul slowly because you will learn nothing of value. His lectures mostly felt like he was putting on a show to let everyone know how smart he was, I barely went and still got a B. Go to lab, it's the only part that doesn't suck, and get AARON SAMS as a TA
Really knows his stuff! Lectures do not coordinate with book very well, so it's important to go to his lectures. Zach Throckmorton is an awesome TA. Exams are somewhat easy as long as you know how the main concepts connect and what they mean for the world today. Really interesting class
He's kind of arrogant, but not extremely obnoxiously so. It's an okay class and pretty interesting, but my TA was kind of an idiot so labs sucked.
awful class, terrible TAs and boring lectures/labs. poorly written exams/lab practicals
The perfect word to describe this class would be "meh". Not too bad for some Bio credits. But beware, sometimes he asks some stuff on the exams that are totally unimportant, therefore you didn't study them and will get it wrong.
This is an excellent class.
Amazing professor. His lectures are entertaining, he's extremely insightful, and the class is interesting. There is some memorization for the tests, but overall they are easy. I DEFINITELY recommend this course.
His lectures are highly entertaining and worth attending.
Somewhat arrogant, he likes to ask broad questions and then explain why each student's response is incorrect. Tests were easy if you studied, impossible if you didn't. Most classes were interesting but labs were pointless.
Interesting information and Hawks presents it all very clearly. The labs are pretty pointless (the first practical is easy..the second kicked my and most others butts) but still go to learn the material. Good class for nonscience people. Tests are focused more on lecture than the book (still read it). Very doable. Curved.
Hawks was arrogant. Exams focus on the details. The curve sucks. Labs are useless. I would not recommend this class.
Unbelievably cocky. Encourages students to raise hands for comments, but then shoots every single thing down and makes the student feel stupid. Very pompous. Yet, somehow entertaining, interesting and thought-provoking. Once you get past the cockiness, can learn a lot.
Professor Hawks had very interesting lectures... he's really funny and gets really into what he's saying. The readings are really boring though and his tests are tricky. A lot of "none of the above" or "all of the above" questions...and the questions are worded almost as if he's out to trick you. Class is curved.
interesting lecture if you find the topic interesting. all powerpoint so easy to phase out. test was the only grade and it was on the minute details of the lectures, so really hard.
The topics were interesting and the pace was slow enough for anyone to keep up (if they attended class). Lab was not that helpful. This class recommended for relatively easy biological science credits!
He's an entertaining guy. Tests questions often stray into material that you think is too obscure to be worthwhile when you're studying. Lab is pointless... I dreaded it.
HATED this class. lect was ok at the beginning, but soon they left me asking: so what is the point? which would be fine, but exams are impossible. i could tell you 5 facts about the topic in a ?, but it would be worded in such way that it wouldn't help. so i studied a lot and felt like an idiot, but there were those who somehow figured it out.
Lots of outside information related to course material. Textbook mostly just a supplement, not really necessary. Lots of class discussion, but sometimes the questions he asks aren't ever really answered and you're left wondering why you spent all that time talking about it. Overall a good class, interesting and easy to get involved in.
This class really destroyed my interest in the topic. Hawks is constantly straying away from the topic and the information given in lecture is not necessary or relevant.
Its an easy class; the lectures include a lot of discussion and the readings are really easy to understand. The tests are multiple choice and are based primarily on the lecture.
His lectures are very clear and helpful, one can achieve in this class with the lectures alone. They are interesting and insightful as well. He is a humorous guy, however he can be arrogant sometimes and his objectiveness is questionable.
real clear, real easy to follow, dont know about the exam yet though...
the lecture was too fast-paced. he made me feel uncomfortable about asking questions even in office hours. he was not understanding about my disability accommodations. the exams are impossible. he's arrogant and teaches his own theories as fact.
was a great class, although i took it in the summer, it was still very interesting. always looked forward to class.
Despite it being a morning class, I was fully absorbed and no yawning. Extremely interesting, I never felt grumpy or futile in attending class. Questions your rascist beliefs. Clear as water, endearing character. I even looked forward to discussion sect. even though it was on a Friday.TA v.good.
His lectures are all powerpoint=very boring=his tests were completely ridiculous and impossible to BS through. Lots of paper writing. GOOD LUCK
