Best UW professor

He is the best chemistry professor! His explanations are really clear and paced slowly which shows that he cares about students learning the material, rather than taking the test and forget about it all. His homework and the take-home exams are fair game and help to understand the material. Also, he's a really kind guy.

Funny guy and keeps lectures interesting, but is a pretty unfair grader (watch out for multiple-part answers on tests and make sure you get part a) right, otherwise you'll get parts b) through f) wrong, for example)

He is extremely helpful, if you take the effort to see him in his office when you have questions, and is one of the nicest professors I have ever had in college.

Easy to listen to in lecture. Tests were not fair, especially with no curve.

Horrible professor. Really rude and unwavering when it came to exam questions. Just cares about significant figures and not actual learning. Avoid Berry. Only 12% of the 400 person class got A's...the other Chem 104 classes were more at 25%.

John Berry is an awesome professor! He's super helpful and is just a very good person. Friday lectures were optional. Recommendations: Never miss lectures and friday optional lectures. Whatever is on Friday review sessions is gonna be on exams. Also, remember all demos. They're a huge part of the exams too.

Do not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not not take Berry :)

Very jolly and funny guy. His curve must have been really generous because I am unsure how I got the grade that I did in his class. Of course, it's not as easy to get an A, but with enough effort, B's are easily manageable.

Fantastic guy. He's very willing to help students, and he's super nice! The class is enjoyable because he's a laid back and funny guy. It's a hard class, but he's always open for questions.

Do no take Berry. I thought he was not helpful and his exams were ridiculous. I ended up .05% away from an A after studying hard all semester and he wouldn't bump my grade up.

Pretty cool guy that really tries to make chemistry enjoyable. Exams weren't terrible, but harder than previous years that he gives you to study. Online quizzes were fairly difficult. Class was a ton of work, but if you attend lecture and put effort in, you'll be fine. You don't need to read the text as everything on the exams is gone over in lect.

This guy actuallly got me interested in Chemistry. I was told the tests were hard by other students, but I never got below a 95%, and overall I had a 97% in the class. Hes a great professor

Professor Berry is one of the rare professors who cares about his students and wants them to do well. He is understanding and kind. Although the online quizzes are difficult and sometimes contain errors, he is very fair in correcting them.

Not the best at getting the concepts through to the students. Fridays are optional so during the week he goes through things really fast. Also, the time for exams is not much compared to how long they are but if you need more time, just go ask him, he gave me extra time and it really improved my grade!

Terrible! He redesigned the course this year to incorporate online quizzes. They were hard and tested concepts not covered in lecture yet. He told our TA to grade harder on labs b/c our class average was too high. DO NOT TAKE BERRY. Lectures are disorganized and boring. Practice exams are too easy and have mistakes in them (that he knows about!).

It's not too hard to get a good grade with him. For this past semester grades were based out of 1000 points, so you just try to get as many points possible; doesn't matter where they come from. As far as clarity & helpfullness, he's useless. His undergrads are obviously not important to him. He says one thing & does another consistently.

Excellent professor and helpful and very kind. He is one of the nicest people I've seen on campus. Very modest and kind.

Funny guy-he does care about his students, and loves chemistry, but did have a few slip-ups. The new online quizzes were tough, and sometimes not taught ahead of time, but I assume they will improve. I thought tests were fine this semester. The total points he uses instead of a curve makes 104 much easier to go through in my opinion. Take him.

Dorky guy but loveable. If you go to lecture, you only need the book for the homework problems and a few things he doesn't cover in class, I didn't read a single chapter. Exams are easy but he takes off entire points for significant figures, so be sure to learn those.

Fairly easy A if the effort is put in. Lectures help clarify what is important to him. Usually have to read each chapter, but didn't this semester and was fine. Hope to get a good TA though because he is too busy to make appointment (only 1 or 2 office hours a week), even if you can't make the regularly scheduled ones.

OK prof, kinda dorky, not the best, but his lectures usually help on the fairly easy exams (easier than practice ones). I usually read the whole textbook but for 3 chapters didn't touch it, just went to lecture and was fine...killer quizzes though and he isn't much help, only 1 or 2 set office hours & won't make apts, even if you can't make them.

Funny guy but doesnt give an easy class. My TA sucked and was no help, quizzes are hard, exams this semester were nothing like the last ones and were very difficult. Overall not a terrible professor to take, but isn't the easy "A" this year like he used to be. You'll have to work and you'll have to read each chapter, and hope you have a good TA.

Good lecture. He always covers material for lab AFTER you've completed the lab, which is really annoying at the beginning of the semester. Fair tests, but the quizzes are brutal and you don't get any help on them.

John Berry is darling. Lots of demos. High qual stuff-online quizzes so you can use your book.

Lecture started off pretty ok and then got dumb. Class is pretty easy except that he puts really wierd questions on exams Like questions that have no real answer, you're just supposed to kind of guess what he was getting at. quizzes are just as hard as the exams, maybe harder which can be good or bad, i guess. over all a decent class.

Great professor. Doesn't lecture tremendously well but gives extra credit on every quiz, has by far the easiest midterms, and HW is graded on completion for a free 10% of your final grade. Fairly easy A or AB.

Pretty OK lecturer, relatively clear. I'd have to agree that the projection screen/overhead is hard to see at the back of the lecture hall. Exams are pretty fair but sometimes include weird questions...take advantage of the 4x6 note card he allows on exams! and oh yeah, the labs for this course are garbage and boring...

To all you people needing 104! TAKE BERRY!! He is very clear, quizzes are easy with extra credit possible, exams are easy and practice exams are helpful. He's never rude and very respectful to students. Cracks jokes and makes the class fun. Overall great professor.

He is the offspring of Milton from office space and the PC guy in the mac commercials. Lecture is a joke, but my TA rocked so the class was a breeze.

Great guy!!! I hated chem 103. I was dreading 104 until this guy walked in the first day. He is hilarious. He made chem 104 as fun as could possibly be (which isn't very fun). But, if you have to take it, Berry is your best option. Tests weren't bad, lectures were helpful. Highly recommended.

lectures were a waste of time, you didnt learn anything and half the time u couldnt see the overhead cuz it was like size 5 font! if u can teach yourself chem then take this guy, if not hope that u get a good TA and GOOD LUCK. my TA sucked and i ended up with a D in the class...granted i gave up after awhile cuz his quizzes are hard as hell.

Very nice guy and eager to help all he can. Tests are not bad at all, studying the practice exams alone helped me do well on them. Can be confusing in lecture, but going to him for help and discussion helps.

Looks like Milton from Office Space, but is a lot more outgoing. Tests weren't bad, but i bombed the final for some reason. He's a very nice man, though.

Easy B if you study at all. Scale is not curved, out of 1000 points. Lectures are rather useless if you read the book, I only went b/c I'm a notetaker. Quizzes are easy except for built-in E.C. Exams, including final, are pretty easy too. He's new, but overall good prof.

I LOVE Berry. When you go to office hours - he is super friendly and helpful - a good teacher - and actually makes chem understandable. Don't blow off the weekly quizes cuz they add up. You can get a B with some effort - but an A is a lot of work. I would take Berry over any other chem prof!!

Very nice guy. Quizzes are tough but have 5 extra points on all of them. Tests are reasonable if you study Treichel's old exams. Uncurved grading scale: 90=A 87.7=AB 80=B. Easy B but getting an A requires some work. Labs are long and annoying but that's chem for you. 20% lab, 3 midterms at 10% each, 25% final, 15% quiz, HW 4%, lap prob set 6%.

He's a funny guy, with a great and loving personality. However, hes not very good at teaching(but he is new, so give him time). A good quality-really cares about students and their success, so once he hones in his skills, he may be remarkable. Midterms are easy, quizzes very hard, final was so-so. Lectures are funny, but usually useless.

He is a good guy, but his lectures can be very boring and irrelevant. The quizzes barely have anything to do with what you covered in class, but you can use a notecard. The exams are fairly easy and similar to the ones posted online. Pretty easy to get an A if you study for the exams.

He's kinda a cute guy and his exams are pretty fair, but he is not a good teacher. What's discussed in lecture has nothing to do with what's on the quizzes and problem sets. If you're into teaching yourself, then Berry's your guy. Just make a good notecard and take advantage of the extra points he builds into tests.

he's a nice person. he's tests are easy if you make a good notecard! write every examples as possible on your notecard.

Delightful little man. Sometimes has difficulty reaching the boards and other high-up things. Quizzes are designed for you to fail, but exams are a breeze if you study Treichel's past tests. Also, has a proclivity for coordinate bonds.

Some of the quizzes were kind of hard in the beginning when he was still trying to figure the whole teaching thing out. But the midterms were very fair and the class average was around 85. He also has a student advisory board who meets with him biweekly to discuss the class from the students point of view. Definitely take him over Shakhashiri.

Lectures are worthwile, with example problems, exams are reasonable with fair grading. Quizzes are sometimes difficult, but you learn your stuff. He expects you to read the book, so it will help a lot. He's a nice guy and a good professor.

Berry is a new teacher and you can kinda tell - but he tell's you what you need to know, give sample problems, and the lectures arn't too bad. Doing the homework really helps. His tests are not too hard but he sometimes makes up numbers that give you wierd answers - so you second guess yourself. He's a good prof.

fri lectures optional, i never went. quizzes are hard, exams not that bad
