When she says that you are getting a word bank, don't think of it as a small box. It is a page of words that contain many synonyms. Reaction papers are an easy A. Tests are basically copy and paste from the selected slides she gives to you, so if you aren't aware of that then you will do bad on the tests. bad with tech.
She is passionate and has done a lot for the Asian American Studies department (she's an OG) but is incredibly dry in her lectures and painfully technologically inept. She teaches using pieces of paper she projects to the screen. Great content and very knowledgeable, just terrible at delivery and makes it hard to learn and retain information.
Prof is very passionate and knowledgeable about material, but teaching style is unengaging and exams are memorization-based rather than concept-focused. Lectures are dry and reading load is heavy. This topic has the potential to be engaging and would be great with more discussion rather than focusing on the names and thoughts of random academics.
Great time in her class. Tests are pretty straight forward, and she really cares about the subject.
With professor Miyasaki, you can tell she's really passionate about what she teaches. However, a lot of the times her lectures can be very boring. But as long as you attend class and pay attention, you will pass with an A. Grade based on 2 straightforward exams and 4 reaction papers (+1 for extra credit). Easy ethnic studies class!
Prof. Jan is okay. You're basically there to listen to her talk about all AA struggles throughout history. I expected it to be more dialog going on, however, she just likes to talk the whole time through the class. Classwise, it's pretty easy. just study everything, including her comments and you'll be okay.
Pretty easy to get an A/AB, low course load. There is a LOT of reading assigned, but you only need to skim it and pay attention in lecture, no need to deeply read. Reaction papers are a free A, exams are actually fairly difficult. but there is some extra credit. Lectures can be dry but the material is interesting if you care about AA studies.
Miyasaki is clearly passionate about the topic and can be fun to listen to if you're also interested in Asian American history. To get an A you really just have to take some notes in lecture and make sure to do her office hours right before tests when she gives out like half the test answers
There are two exams. A midterm and a final. In addition, there are 4 reaction papers that you do base on the readings of your choice. Everything is weighed the same. She gives a clear rubric for the papers. She also gives out sample questions for her exams. She is really passionate about what she teaches.
Jan is a very nice lady and is very passionate about the Asian American movement. Although the course material is boring, it is relatively easy material. Most of her test questions come straight off her slide. Basically copy down everything she puts on the board and the class is a breeze. 4 papers easily graded and 2 straightforward tests.
Workload isn't too bad. Lots of readings at times. Lectures can seem a bit long and boring bc there's a lot of history material, but you learn a lot about the Asian American movement. Tests aren't hard as long as you're familiar with the material. She is pretty straight-forward with her stuff. No textbook. Attendance is taken.
Good Professor, knows her ethnic history very well. I agree with all the previous comments, Multiple Choice can be a little tricky, but just do your best to stay awake in class and you will do fine. Good Ethnic Studies course
Jan is a great professor, very smart and passionate about her work. Many students did not do the readings and made fun of her teaching style because it is unorthodox. This said, at the end of the day I knew more about ethnic issues than I ever expected to learn going in. Take this class for ethnic studies credit, Jan is great
OH Jan! Interesting lady, however does not have a good teaching style. Uses WOLFVISION to show all notes- which becomes very boring after the first hour. TA Johana is helpful, but even she does not have too much energy. Easy A class, learned some cool stuff, just not the most interesting to sit in for 75 min 2 days a week! GOOD ethnic studies class
Lectures were disorganized and inefficient, but she highlighted what was important, if you could stay awake long enough. Exams were a little wordy, but manageable.
Couldn't agree more with the previous review. Most disorganized lectures you will ever attend. Most assignments are all easy, but exams can be difficult because of how scatter-brained the lectures are.
Class was EXTREMELY boring!! Lectures are very confusing and unorganized. Don't read any of the readings and they are wayyy too long anyways. 4 reflection papers that aren't hard, 1 midterm and final exam and 1 final project. Midterm/Final can be kind of hard since her notes are all over, MC sections have like a-h "select all that apply options".
Easiest ethnic studies. don't use book just take notes in class. 1 midterm essay, gives you ?s before. same for final essay and allowed to use outline. final project interview an asian. take this class for an easy A
The class is super easy. DON'T buy the books because you don't need them. If you go to class, she covers everything that is on the exams. Exams are essays but she lets you use your notes for the second exam.
Her lectures are very poorly put together but the class is really easy. You don't need to read the book as long as you go to lecture. She covers it all during lectures
Well, her lectures are pretty boring, but you don't need to read the book if you go to them, she gives you all the test answers you need. I made up my entire final exam and got an A on it, it was supposed to be an interview, but I just made it up, shows you how easy the class is...
The lectures are boring as heck, but the tests are very very easy, since she gives you the questions and answers beforehand. She was very nice. NOT hot... I don't know how that pepper thing got there. Her classroom is hot as hell too, so prepare for that. Often, the movies she brought in meant naptime.
Very boring. Unorganized structure to lecture... just keeps talking. Given, the things you learn are very interesting. But she basically repeats what you are told to read. Tests are EASY. She gives the questions before the test day. Helps you outline it! Second test is open book! Final is paper.
