confusing and boring lecture
Jack!! My favorite professor!! You will never feel bored in his lectures!
good
I thought Jack did a good job, considering the difficulty of the material. midterm is challenging but fair if you study from the problem sets. The final was extremely hard. Having a good TA is crucial, especially for the 2nd half. Know going in that there are only 3 grades: problem sets 25% (8 of them, drops worst), midterm 30% & final 45%.
Professor Porter can be confusing at times. Some of his lectures seem very repetitive while some are hard to follow along. He is interested in the pure math behind statistics so it can be tough to stay interested if that isn't your goal.
Pray that you have a good ta or be an amazing independent student. He is the worst professor I have had on campus. His tests mention things he spent less than 3 minutes on per lecture. 45% of your grade is the final. He should not being teaching a required course.
Lectures are very draggy and he will ramble a lot. Also he provides very little examples and he gets caught up explaining the real world application of statistics rather than actually teaching you how to solve the problems that appear on homeworkmidtermsfinals. Do not take this class if you're not prepared to teach yourself half of the syllabus.
Really good professor. I did not find stats interesting at all so lectures do get very boring, but if you have to take the class he is a great professor to learn the material. Only one midterm so both the final and midterm a worth a lot of points. Book is also helpful when the material was difficult.
Independent studying will secure much better grades than listening to him. Long, drawn out lectures. Pray that you have a great ta.
Jack Porter made second semester econometrics clear and interesting. His problem sets were challenging but fair, as were his tests. It was an honor to be taught so effectively by such a brilliant researcher. His course was a highlight of my UW-Madison experience.
Greatest stats/economics professor at Madison. He's helpful, kind, clear, and very smart.
I only took this class because I had to for the econ major, so take my complaints with a grain of salt. Lectures made no sense at all to me, Sandholm's book (course textbook) was my lifesaver. All the HW questions came from the book so that's where I found all the answers. The final was awful though, and at 50%, definitely a kille
Starting Spring 2012, Econ 310 is the only stats class you can take. Jack is different from other professors, but is consistent in Bill Sandholm's teaching style. He's great at what he does, and his TAs know what they're talking about. He will ramble a lot though. Other than that, I wasn't fond of a final being 50% of my grade.
Don't take 310 unless you really need econometrics. Another stats class of lower number can be substituted, it just won't give you the econ credits. That said, Jack is a great professor. He's crystal clear, and although stats is mundane, he really goes slow and explains things thoroughly. The course is tough, he does well considering.
The lecture is absolutely worthless. The course is a requirement for Econ majors and the majority of the students have limited interest in the material. Lecture is focused on stats theory and has very little to do with testing material. Make sure you go to discussion, that is the only place you learn anything.
