Horticulture 350 was my favorite class taken at UW Madison so far. All of the lectures were very interesting and made me think critically about the world around me. Also this class is not just limited to horticulture but the lectures encompass many other academic fields philosophy, chemistry, etc. I would definitely recommend taking this class!!
Professor Goldman was always engaging and clearly passionate about the class lectures and content. The labs were very fun, and the exams were graded very fairly. Some of his personal research gets tied into slideshows, which was very interesting to learn about!
Dr. Goldman has a pleasant and friendly attitude every day. He cares deeply about the subject matter, and incorporates previous research he has performed into relevant lectures. Wonderful professor to develop a professional relationship with.
A very caring professor who was always available outside of class. Always made his lectures interesting and demonstrated dedication. The projects were very engaging and creative, my only complaint would be the fill-in-the-blank midterm.
The grading scale is very harsh compared to other classes, and you have to do VERY well on the midterm to get an A. So much so that many people cheated because it was online. The average on the midterm was around a 30%, and there is no curve in the class. But if you do well on that then you don't have to worry.
Great professor that really cares about vegetables. makes lectures interesting and labs are fun.
Loved Professor Irwin! He's so sweet and truly cares about his students. Classes got to be a little long, but the material is not super difficult, and the projects are actually pretty fun! :)
Cool dude, very passionate about the stuff he is teaching. Very straightforward with his grading.
Lab and class was fun and very informative. I would have liked it better if the exams weren't so nitpicky and easier to study for.
Super fun guy, loves interacting with the class and keeping things chill. I took a first-year interest group that was led by him and we went further in-depth with topics presented in the main class. There wasn't anything on the exams that we hadn't learned about, and he often ended class early. Easy class for anyone who likes plants/horticulture
Irwin was overall a pretty good professor, but he definitely spent too much time on Charles Darwin trivia facts and not enough time on some of the harder material. It's evident how passionate he is about the material and it wasn't too difficult.
This man is a wonderful professor and an even better person. I enjoyed the classes that I took with him. This class is heavy on solid completion for reflections/discussions. However, the midterm exam, the only test the entire semester, was extremely tough. I really recommend this class. If you can, establish a relationship. You won't regret it.
Very very easy and laid back class except for one thing. The mid term was very very hard. The average grade was like a 50% and it is not curved. great class besides that though.
This class in particular was incredibly easy yet incredibly interesting bc of Goldman's choice of lecturers and discussions with students. He didn't lecture at all, but instead just got to know us all. He was sweet and easy to talk to, and an easy grader. He was just as curious as we were.
Prof Goldman is so understanding of technical difficulties, and responds quickly to your concerns! Additionally, the course material is presented very well.
Big fan of this man. He made it easy to learn horticulture online this semester, and the class was really fun.
Professor Goldman is the best! He clearly cares about all of his students and is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter. I am a freshman and took this class as an elective and wasn't really looking forward to it, but it soon became my favorite class because of Irwin. Every student deserves to have such a great teacher.
Hands down the best professor at UW-Madison. I cannot speak highly enough about Irwin. He is so kind, caring, and teaches some very interesting material. Take any class with Irwin- you won't regret a second of it.
Good professor. Passionate, engaging, gifted lecturer, and clear presenter of ideas. Too much time spent on Darwin trivia (which was not tested on exam). Some annoying typos and lack of clarity on lecture slides, especially on the calculation problems. Do not bother reading the textbook. Very interesting and caring prof; would take again.
Started off really well with explaining concepts clearly and posted all of his lecture slides, but he wasted a whole lecture talking about Darwin trivia and ended up falling a lecture behind, so he unfortunately went way too fast in the later lectures and ended up skimming over some of the harder things to learn.
Irwin is the best professor I have had so far! He really is passionate about everything he does and cares deeply about his students. There are many opportunities if you get to know him. One negative is the generality on the exams.
Not the best teacher. Lectures are not relevant to test questions. Does a poor job of making important points clear. Spends an inordinate amount of time on unrelated and trivial subjects (Darwin's detailed history,) while neglecting to focus on important concepts that are tested in this class. Also takes FOREVER to reply to emails. Adequate at best
He obviously cares about the success of his students. If you have a chance to take a class with Goldman, do it.
Irwin is the best professor I have had at the UW. Take his class and really listen to him, he knows what he is talking about.
Clear, engaging, and fun. Obviously knows his material, posts excellent resources for studying, gives very good problem sets. Knows everything there is too know about Charles Darwin, and can sometimes go overboard with that, but it's fun. Would take another class of his.
this man is my favorite 50 year old professor. his niece is the cutest little thing and of course very pretty and smart. he is my favorite teacher and he loves me.
Irwin is a great teacher and will talk with you about anything that you want to talk about. He is very approachable and incredibly intelligent. Although, the tests were a lot harder than expected, there were still no big surprises when it came to the final if you are prepared.
I really enjoyed having him as a professor and would recommend him to anyone! He is a very genuine and friendly guy that was always really enthusiastic about what he was talking about.
Professor Goldman is an awesome guy. Very friendly, very enthusiastic, good at getting everyone excited about evolutionary concepts. He's also easy to relate to, approachable, and very willing to help. He's also a real scholar of Darwin. He provides interesting examples from his work in horticulture. If you get the chance, take his class!
World Veggie Crops is the best! The "lab" is basically a taste test and the topics are very interesting. Irwin is such an amazing guy. Very knowledgable and friendly. His exams are significantly harder than Jim's though... you've been warned!
