Taught me genuinely invaluable information that I still reference to this day. Tough class but I learned such important material.

Great course, great professor

I will start by saying that the content of this course is understandable and the concepts aren't too difficult; however, I would not take this class again. Prof Baird is a very tough grader and it's quite difficult to understand what he wants from his students. Also, the lectures are pretty similar to the textbook.

I overall liked this class. Lectures can be very long and he tends to read off the slide but overall interesting content. Tests are wild cards so make sure to know the clean definitions. He expects a lot out of his students and is very tough grader. Take another environmental class before this one. Hard to grasp concepts w/o learning them before.

Ian is a very traditional lecturer, and most of the course consists of writing two papers, listening in lecture, doing the readings, and a final exam. I found his lecturing style engaging, but he gave minimal direction on the papers in class, so if you struggle with writing at all it would be best to talk to him about your paper in person.

Professor Baird is a excellent teacher. I am surprised that some others do not see things the way I do. He is friendly and helpful and knows the material he teaches very well. His exams and assignments are not overly difficult.

Baird is an expert in the field and makes this prevalent throughout the course. He enjoys debates with students, but can also be intimidating and condescending. He gives poor justification for controversial issues and casually makes offensive remarks. His expectations are not clear for assignments and he asks very specific question on exams.

Ian interrupts students when they are trying to ask questions and refuses to provide study guides for exams. All his lectures are straight out of the book and this exams are more difficult than he would have you think. He expects you to memorize the exact definitions of 200+ vocabulary words and be able to remember them from the top of your head.

Baird was a great lecturer and I enjoyed going to class to hear him talk. Lectures were very repetitive of the required reading so I usually skipped the book reading to stay more engaged during lecture. Tough grader, and looks for arguments that are textbook. Very interesting material, but hoped for a little more personal influence in lectures.

The lectures were taught straight from the textbook, making them unnecessary. However, Baird was passionate in the lectures about his own research, where he engaged with the class. He had little respect for students, particularly female students, during class discussions. Papers were extremely open-ended prompts without clear expectations.

Worst professor I had at Wisconsin. Lectures were long and he read directly from slides. Interesting content but delivery and engagement was lacking. He is knowledgable about his own research but was an overall poor professor. He would also interrupt students and act directed questions that made students feel uncomfortable. Exams were wild cards.

Exams are hard to prepare for, with unexpected questions. Paper grading seems random. He does not really answer questions with clarity, and usually interrupts you before you can finish your question. Literally reads straight off of his lecture slides. Overall not that hard to get a good grade, but very hard to learn anything in this class.

Knowledgable, but for this class he tries too hard to bring in his own research without being able to concretely connect it to the material. Additionally, his lectures are straight from the textbook practically word-for-word and he uses part of the class time for discussion (waste of time if you ask me). He could do better.

Baird is amazing with his knowledge. His grading can be difficult at times, but fair. I probably got a 10/30 on the final exam with average grades on the essays and I ended up with a B for the course. He will have a huge curve since his exam was very difficult. Great experience overall!

He is really knowledgable and knows a lot about what he's teaching in this class because he is teaching from direct experience. If you're interested in SE Asia or rural, environmental politics TAKE THIS CLASS. Incredibly interesting

Baird is a great teacher! had him for my first semester of freshman year and his class was a great way to start out my college experience! The TA, Jake, can be harsh at times but overall the class is really interesting, lectures arent boring and the workload isnt too hard. There are readings but he covers them all in lecture . Exams straightforward

Good class. Good prof.

This is a good course and the professor did a good job. He marked all the material himself this semester.

This professor did a great job. I highly recommend him and the course.

He only talks about Canada, Laos, and Cambodia. Follows the book for the first half of the semester, and then just talks about his research. The class started out interesting and went downhill very very very fast.

I had him for resources and people and he was a good lecturer. The course obviously is not a higher level but i thought it was still somewhat difficult. He does not grade his own papers which does suck. however, he definitely knows what he's talking about, he was an original EII employee

Awful, no help. He does not grade his own papers so there is no point in asking him for help. Can't give feedback because he never sees anything you give him. AWFUL
